The nuclear ploidy of 14 placentas was determined by flow cytometry. All histologically classified complete moles (4 cases), hydropic villi (4 cases) and control placentas (3 cases) were diploid; whereas two of three histologically classified partial moles were triploid. The remaining case classified as partial mole was diploid, most likely a complete mole. It was concluded that DNA flow cytometric analysis offers an informative supplement to the histological interpretation of hydropic placentas.

DNA ploidy of paraffin-embedded tissue from 11 patients with epithelioid sarcoma and 20 control specimens (granuloma annulare and sarcoid) was studied. DNA aneuploidy was found in 64% of the epithelioid sarcomas and in none of the control samples. Aneuploidy did not correlate with necrosis, vascular invasion, or mitotic rate. There was also no association of aneuploidy with adverse outcome.

19 cases of malignant trophoblastic tumors were studied by flow cytometry in comparison with 9 cases of benign hydatidiform mole that had been followed up for 1.5 years with no history of malignancy. The results showed that there were significant differences in DNA index (DI), S phase of cells and the pattern of ploidies between the malignant trophoblastic tumor and benign hydatidiform mole. It is considered that flow cytometry is a useful parameter in reference to the diagnosis, chemotherapy and assessing prognosis of malignant trophoblastic tumor.
