Contrasting the classic effect of reward on attentional priority maps: behavioral evidence for an attentional gating of spatially-specific reward signals.

The control of selective visuo-spatial attention is known to rely on multiple signals, including reward. While most attention control signals are well acknowledged to interact with each other, the case of reward has led to mixed findings supporting either its interaction with, or its independence from other signals. We addressed this issue using a 4-item search task that entailed spatially biased reward contingencies, with one of the four locations associated with high rewards for correct target discriminations. In different conditions, the target, a distractor or neither of them could be phys

Are standing and walking overrated? Ableism in spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: This article examines how ableist assumptions may influence spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation and hinder the adjustment to life with a disability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recognising the growing importance of lived experience insight, we integrate experiential learning, critical reflection, and engagement with academic literature to provide a reflexive account drawing on our expertise as quadriplegics and researchers. RESULTS: Ableism may influence rehabilitation, especially as internalised by people with SCI. Informed by common cultural narratives, such as the positivity myth

Medial temporal lobe structure, mnemonic and perceptual discrimination in healthy older adults and those at risk for mild cognitive impairment.

Cognitive tests sensitive to the integrity of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), such as mnemonic discrimination of perceptually similar stimuli, may be useful early markers of risk for cognitive decline in older populations. Perceptual discrimination of stimuli with overlapping features also relies on MTL but remains relatively unexplored in this context. We assessed mnemonic discrimination in two test formats (Forced Choice, Yes/No) and perceptual discrimination of objects and scenes in 111 community-dwelling older adults at different risk status for cognitive impairment based on neuropsycholog

Mind the gap: temporal discrimination and dystonia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: One of the most widely studied perceptual measures of sensory dysfunction in dystonia is the temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) (the shortest interval at which subjects can perceive that there are two stimuli rather than one). However the elevated thresholds described may be due to a number of potential mechanisms as current paradigms test not only temporal discrimination but also extraneous sensory and decision-making parameters. In this study two paradigms designed to better quantify temporal processing are presented and a decision-making model is used to assess

Olfactory dysfunction in temporal lobe epilepsy: a case of ictus-related parosmia.

Olfactory abnormalities in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) usually involve either brief hallucinations prior to seizures or chronic impairments in odor discrimination and identification. We describe the case of a man (B.C.) with TLE with an unusual presentation, an ictus-related parosmia. B.C. reported distorted perception of odor quality and hedonics that could provoke nausea and gagging, typically at its most extreme in the week or so following a seizure. Measures of B.C.'s olfactory functioning were obtained at stages of the ictal cycle when parosmia symptoms were severe and when they had decr

Selective extra-dimensional set shifting deficit in a knock-in mouse model of Huntington's disease.

People with early-stage Huntington's disease have been found to have a specific deficit in performing an extra-dimensional shift. To date no evidence of this deficit has been identified in transgenic or knock-in rodent models of the disease. The aim of the present paper then, was to test whether homozygous knock-in mice derived from the Hdh(CAG(150)) mouse line were impaired in any of five 2-choice discrimination tasks (simple, compound, compound reversal, intra-dimensional shift and extra-dimensional shift), and whether these mice were impaired at recalling these tasks on the following day. A case of verbal auditory agnosia: missing the word ... missing the sound...

The neuropsychological nature of verbal auditory agnosia is not fully understood. This study aims to describe the language deficits and the remediation strategies used in a person with verbal auditory agnosia. In addition, it will address the theoretical issues concerning the nature of the phenomenon and the clinical implications in the management of people with this disorder.

Polymorphism in normal human color vision and its mechanism.

Earlier we reported that Rayleigh matches made by males with normal color vision fall into distinct groups, and proposed that this behavior reflects an X-chromosome linked polymorphism in the spectral positioning of cone pigments (Neitz & Jacobs, 1986). In the present experiments two different color matches were obtained from each of 60 color normal males. Comparisons of the data from these two matches allowed variations in color matching that are produced by individual differences in the spectral positioning of middle and long wavelength cone pigments to be distinguished from color vision var

Effects of naltrexone, and d-amphetamine, and their interaction on the stimulus control of choice behavior of rats.

The hypothesis that endogenous opioid peptides modulate attentional processes was tested. The effects of the opioid antagonist naltrexone (NALT), d-amphetamine (AMP), and their interaction were investigated in rats trained in a two-choice task in which the position of a short-duration light served as a cue for food-reinforced responses. NALT (0.25, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mg/kg) produced no significant changes in performance (accuracy, choice latency, and food retrieval time). As predicted, AMP induced dose-dependent biphasic effects. Low doses of AMP (0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg) significantly enhanced acc

Studies on visual perception of locomotion.

The problem about visual discrimination between seeing objects in motion and perception of motion of the perceiver (locomotion) was taken up. A flow of vertical motion was presented to limited areas of the far periphery (45 degrees-90 degrees) of the retina simultaneously with optical information about a stationary room over the rest of the retina. The result was that most subjects perceived themselves as sitting in an elevator continuously moving upward or downward. Thus, peripheral motion stimulation over a few percent of the retinal area determines locomotion perception in apparent competit

Psychosocial needs, mental health, and HIV transmission risk behavior among people living with HIV/AIDS in St Petersburg, Russia.

OBJECTIVES: The number of new HIV infections in Russia has doubled annually since 1996. A total of 232 424 HIV infections have been officially recorded but the actual number probably exceeds one million. Very little is known about the social, psychological, behavioral, and health care service access of persons living with HIV in Russia. DESIGN: A cross-sectional sample of 470 persons with HIV/AIDS recruited in 2002 using a representative sampling plan in major St. Petersburg HIV care and service agencies. METHODS: Participants completed anonymous self-administered questionnaires that elicite

["Psychologic marital unfitness" in cyclothymia? A case report on the topic of the annullment procedure in canon law].

According to the Canon Law (CIC) of the catholic church a marriage can be annulled because of psychological inability under certain conditions. We present the case report of a married woman, who fell ill with cyclothymia after her first childbirth. Her marriage was annulled under canon 1095 (n.3 CIC) because of psychological inability to fulfill martial obligations. The authors believe that this represents a clear cut case of discrimination against patients with mental disorders: on the one hand the catholic church claims that every martial bond is principally indissoluble; on the other hand t

Development and Psychometric Validation of the Mistreatment Questionnaire for Medical Trainees (MQMT) in Mexican Medical Students, Interns, and Residents.

Introduction: Mistreatment in medical training is a highly prevalent phenomenon that occurs in different types and forms. However, despite its high frequency, no measurement instrument has been validated that represents these different types of mistreatment in its factorial structure. Therefore, the objective of this study was to design the Mistreatment Questionnaire for Medical Trainees (MQMT) and to obtain initial evidence of its validity and reliability. Methods: Medical trainees at different stages (non-clinical and clinical undergraduate medical students, interns, and residents) were invi

Association of COMT, BDNF and 5-HTT functional polymorphisms with personality characteristics.

Background: The real impact of genetic factors on personality is still unknown, even if in literature about 50% of variance in personality traits are considered genetically determined. The determination of the genetic variance in personality traits could promote psychological well-being and the prevention of psychopathologies, because there are many experimental evidences showing that mental illness is associated to personality. Numerous studies have showed that Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and serotonin transporter (5-HTT) are genes whose varia

The Psychological Impact Among Syrian Refugees in Host Countries.

Background: Refugees face numerous challenges, including conflict, displacement, family separation, human rights violations, limited access to basic needs, and exposure to violence and torture. These experiences significantly impact their psychological well-being, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Syrian refugees in Jordan may experience higher levels of depression and anxiety than those in Spain due to harsher living conditions, limited economic opportunities, uncertain legal status, inadequate mental health services, and ongoing proximity to the Syrian conflict, whereas r

Estimating the Roles of Racism and Homophobia in HIV Testing Among Black Sexual Minority Men and Transgender Women With a History of Incarceration in the HPTN 061 Cohort.

Black sexual minority men (BSMM) and Black transgender women (BTW) have disproportionately high HIV prevalence, making HIV testing critical for treatment and prevention. Racism and homophobia may be barriers to testing among BSMM/BTW, particularly in the context of previous incarceration. We analyzed a subsample (n = 655) of HIV-negative, previously incarcerated BSMM/BTW in the HIV Prevention Trials Network 061 study, generating prevalence ratios and interaction terms testing associations between experienced racism and homophobia with past-year HIV testing. Both racism (aPR = 0.83, 95% CI [0.7

Acquisition, discriminative stimulus control, and retention of increases/decreases in blood pressure of normotensive human subjects.

The aims of this study of 24 normotensive subjects were: to compare a free-operant with a discrete-trials training format; to determine the most effective training procedure by comparing instrumental conditioning with instructional set and a control; to see if both increases and decreases in blood pressure could be brought under discriminative control, and to examine the maintenance of acquired self-control of blood pressure. A 2 X 3 design was employed in which two trial formats (free operant and discrete trials) were factorially compared with three training conditions (instrumental condition

Experiences of discrimination: validity and reliability of a self-report measure for population health research on racism and health.

Population health research on racial discrimination is hampered by a paucity of psychometrically validated instruments that can be feasibly used in large-scale studies. We therefore sought to investigate the validity and reliability of a short self-report instrument, the "Experiences of Discrimination" (EOD) measure, based on a prior instrument used in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. Study participants were drawn from a cohort of working class adults, age 25-64, based in the Greater Boston area, Massachusetts (USA). The main study analytic sample included 1
