Formation of disinfection byproducts as affected by biochar during water treatment.

Biochar (BC) is as an emerging and promising adsorbent for the removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions in water treatment given its porous structure, large surface area, and numerous O-functional groups. However, the effects of BC on the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during the disinfection process of water treatment remains largely unknown. This study investigated the influence of aqueous solution chemistry on DBP formation in the presence of BC during chlorination. BC samples prepared from different biomass precursors (wheat straw, peanut shells, and shaddock peel) with di

Disinfection with hydrated lime may help manage cryptosporidiosis in calves.

Diarrhea is common in young calves and is often caused by Cryptosporidium parvum infection. The aim of this study was to investigate if disinfection of calf pens with hydrated lime would reduce contamination of C. parvum oocysts and improve calf health in herds with C. parvum associated diarrhea problems. Four dairy herds with ongoing C. parvum associated calf diarrhea problems each participated in the study over six to seven months. During the study period, all pens/huts for young calves were cleaned according to the usual farm routine before a new calf entered. Hydrated lime was then used to

UVC radiation as an effective disinfectant method to inactivate human papillomaviruses.

Endocavitary ultrasound probes are part of a commonly used procedure in the clinical arena. The cavities examined, vaginal canal and cervix, anal canal, and oral cavity are all areas commonly infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV), thus making them susceptible to contamination by HPV. It has been demonstrated that these probes can remain contaminated with high-risk HPV even when approved disinfection protocols have been performed. we have previously shown that HPV is resistant to some high-level disinfectant (HLD). In our present study we analyzed efficacy of using high-level ultra-viole

Radiofrequency Glow Discharge as a Mode of Disinfection for Elastomeric Impression Materials.

INTRODUCTION: Prosthodontic practice involves procedures in which impressions of the maxillary and mandibular arches are mandatory. Cross infection is one of the major problems that can occur in regular dental practice. Every dentist should take utmost care to prevent cross infection as oral cavity is the source of variety of microorganisms which can often cause diseases that can be fatal. Although precautions, such as wearing of gloves and mask, sterilization of instruments are given importance, the need for disinfection of impressions is often neglected. Hence, the aim of the study was to as

Disinfection of human musculoskeletal allografts in tissue banking: a systematic review.

Musculoskeletal allografts are typically disinfected using antibiotics, irradiation or chemical methods but protocols vary significantly between tissue banks. It is likely that different disinfection protocols will not have the same level of microorganism kill; they may also have varying effects on the structural integrity of the tissue, which could lead to significant differences in terms of clinical outcome in recipients. Ideally, a disinfection protocol should achieve the greatest bioburden reduction with the lowest possible impact on tissue integrity. A systematic review of three databases

[The Resolution of Wet Wrap Bag after Disinfected in the Pulsation Sterilizer].

Our hospital has instaled a couple of high temperature and high pressure pulsation sterilizers. However, after the process of disinfection and sterilization, we found that many non-woven bags in which wrapped the contaminated medical devices were wet. This abnormal phenomenon continuously has happened a couple of times. Having excessive condensed water inside the wrap bag wil severely affect the sterilization effect, so we did a scrupulous survey of the phenomenon and the structure of the machine and the steam boiler. At last, we came up with a perfect solution, that is, to make a redesign of

Environmental and personal determinants of the uptake of disinfection by-products during swimming.

BACKGROUND: Trihalomethanes (THMs) in exhaled breath and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in urine are internal dose biomarkers of exposure to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in swimming pools. OBJECTIVE: We assessed how these biomarkers reflect the levels of a battery of DBPs in pool water and trichloramine in air, and evaluated personal determinants. METHODS: A total of 116 adults swam during 40min in a chlorinated indoor pool. We measured chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform in exhaled breath and TCAA in urine before and after swimming, trichloramine in air and

Photolytic dehalogenation of disinfection byproducts in water by natural sunlight irradiation.

The aqueous photolysis of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) by natural sunlight irradiation was studied to determine their photolytic dehalogenation kinetics. Total organic halogen analysis was used to quantify the dehalogenation extents of DBPs during outdoor photolysis experiments. Dichloroacetamide, chloral hydrate, chloroform, dichloroacetonitrile, monochloro-, monobromo-, dichloro-, dibromo-, and trichloroacetic acids were generally resistant to photolytic dehalogenation and showed less than 10% reduction after 6 h sunlight irradiation. Monoiodoacetic acid, tribromoacetic acid, b

Aggregation of Adenovirus 2 in Source Water and Impacts on Disinfection by Chlorine.

It is generally accepted that viral particles in source water are likely to be found as aggregates attached to other particles. For this reason, it is important to investigate the disinfection efficacy of chlorine on aggregated viruses. A method to produce adenovirus particle aggregation was developed for this study. Negative stain electron microscopy was used to measure aggregation before and after addition of virus particles to surface water at different pH and specific conductance levels. The impact of aggregation on the efficacy of chlorine disinfection was also examined. Disinfection expe

Developmental effects and genotoxicity of 10 water disinfection by-products in zebrafish.

Disinfection by-products are contaminants produced during drinking water disinfection. Several DBPs have been implicated in a variety of toxic effects, mainly carcinogenic and genotoxic effects. Moreover, DBPs exposure has also been associated with an increased risk of developmental effects. In this study, the developmental toxicity and genotoxicity of 10 DBPs (four trihalomethanes [THMs], five haloacetic acids [HAAs] and sodium bromate) in the zebrafish embryo model were evaluated. Embryos exposed for 72 hours were observed for different endpoints such as growth, hatching success, malformatio

Effectiveness of full- and partial-mouth disinfection on halitosis in periodontal patients.

To compare the effectiveness of full- and partial-mouth disinfection for halitosis control, patients were assigned to treatment with full-mouth therapy (complete scaling and root planing in one stage within 24 h) or conventional therapy in quadrants (scaling and root planing performed by quadrant over a period of 4 weeks) (n = 90 for each group). Both groups were then subdivided: half the patients scraped their tongue daily and half did not. The patients were then evaluated by halimeter, organoleptic testing, and tongue coating index. Halimeter evaluation showed greater reduction of sulfide ga

A systematic review and cost-effectiveness analysis of tonometer disinfection methods.

OBJECTIVE: The Goldmann applanation tonometer presents the problem of being one of the most widely used pieces of equipment in the ophthalmic clinic and a known risk factor for the transmission of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). The purpose of this review is to assess the effectiveness of 3 methods of disinfection: alcohol swabs, immersion in peroxide, and the use of disposable prisms. An economic evaluation is undertaken to assess the cost-effectiveness of the 3 alternatives. In doing so, we contribute an evidence-based overview of the issue at an opportune time, because several jurisdic

Disinfection of ocular cells and tissues by atmospheric-pressure cold plasma.

BACKGROUND: Low temperature plasmas have been proposed in medicine as agents for tissue disinfection and have received increasing attention due to the frequency of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This study explored whether atmospheric-pressure cold plasma (APCP) generated by a new portable device that ionizes a flow of helium gas can inactivate ocular pathogens without causing significant tissue damage. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We tested the APCP effects on cultured Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Herpes

Effect of bromide on the formation of disinfection by-products during wastewater chlorination.

The effect of bromide ion on the formation and speciation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) during the chlorination of biologically treated wastewaters was investigated. The experimental results showed that the formation of total THMs and total HAAs during chlorine disinfection increased with increasing bromide levels in wastewater. The formation of CHBr(3) increased nearly linearly with increasing bromide ion levels, while CHCl(2)Br and CHClBr(2) increased with increasing bromide concentration from 0 to 3.2 mg L(-1) and thereafter remained constant or slightly decreased. Fast, broad-range disinfection of bacteria, fungi, viruses and prions.

Effective disinfectants are of key importance for the safe handling and reprocessing of surgical instruments. This study tested whether new formulations containing SDS, NaOH and 1-propanol (n-propanol) are simultaneously active against a broad range of pathogens including bacteria, fungi, non-enveloped viruses and prions. Inactivation and disinfection were examined in suspension and on carriers, using coagulated blood or brain homogenate as an organic contaminant. Coomassie blue staining was used to assess whether the formulations undesirably fixed proteins to rough surfaces. A mixture of 0.2 …

Chlorine disinfection of produce to inactivate hepatitis A virus and coliphage MS2.

Disinfection of produce is principally used to inactivate spoilage microbes and may also reduce the risk of consumer exposure to enteric pathogens. However, the rate and extent of enteric virus inactivation by free chlorine on produce has not been adequately characterized. Experiments were performed to determine the kinetics of free chlorine inactivation of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the indicator virus coliphage MS2 on strawberries (SBs), cherry tomatoes (CTs), and head lettuce (HL). The oxidant demand of these produce items also was determined. When produce items were exposed to approximate
