We examined the morphological effects of carbon disulfide exposure on neurons and vasculature of the visual system of macaque monkeys. Five monkeys were exposed to 256 ppm carbon disulfide (CS2) by inhalation for 6 hr a day, 5 days a week. One monkey, sacrificed immediately after exposure, had numerous axonal swellings in the distal optic tract. The results of all the efforts made so far towards the reduction of CS2 concentrations at the workplaces of viscose rayon industry indicate that achievement of safe standards is little probable in the nearest future. Likewise, the preventive activities aimed at the reduction of the daily working time from 8 to 6 hours and referring workers to work with no exposure for several months are hardly effective. Basing on the results of clinical and epidemiological studies of the CS2 exposed population and relevant control groups the authors indicate their own solutions of decreasing the health risk.

A significant but reversible inhibition of phenazone elimination was observed in rabbits chronically exposed to CS2. Lack of significant difference of phenazone pharmacokinetics in exposed rabbits 24 h after the last exposure compared with the control group, indicates that alteration of phenazone elimination after chronic exposure to CS2 is reversible. The clinical and neuropsychiatric features of seven workers from the grain storage industry are described. All were exposed to fumigants, especially carbon disulfide and malathion. Clinical manifestations included cogwheel rigidity, resting and action tremor, peripheral neuropathy, pyramidal tract signs, an EEG pattern of sleep apnea, and characteristic measurable neurobehavioral dysfunction. Similar signs and symptoms due to carbon disulfide exposure in the viscose rayon industry strongly supported the conclusion that these grain storage workers were suffering from carbon disulfide poisoning.
