Transitions in first-year college student drinking behaviors: does pre-college drinking moderate the effects of parent- and peer-based intervention components?

This study used Latent Transition Analysis (LTA) to examine a stage-sequential model of alcohol use among a sample of high-risk matriculating college students (N=1,275). Measures of alcohol use were collected via web-administered surveys during the summer before entering college and followed-up during the fall semester of college. Seven indicators of alcohol use were used in the LTA models, including temporal measures of typical drinking throughout the week. The results indicated that four latent statuses characterized patterns of drinking at both times, though the proportion of students in ea…

Motives to play drinking games and their unique associations with drinking game behaviors and consequences in a national sample of university students in the United States.

Objective: Playing drinking games (DGs) is a common behavior among university students, which is concerning given that DG participation is related to more alcohol use/consequences. People's motivations for playing DGs are associated with certain DG behavior patterns and negative consequences. However, few studies have accounted for general drinking motives and other key covariates when examining the unique associations between DG-specific motivations and DG outcomes. The present study used a large, multisite national sample of university students in the United States to determine cross-section…

Characteristics and drinking behaviour of patients on antiretroviral therapy who drink and attend HIV clinics in Tshwane, South Africa: Implications for intervention.

BACKGROUND: Patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) who drink alcohol are at risk of poor medication adherence and negative health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To explore the drinking behaviour of patients on ART and assess the associations between drinking, adherence to ART and viral load, and in particular factors associated with binge drinking (≥6 drinks per occasion) at least monthly. METHODS: We recruited 623 HIV patients from six hospitals in the Tshwane metropole who scored positive on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) but were 'non-dependent' drinkers into a randomise…

The way one thinks affects the way one drinks: subjective evaluations of alcohol consequences predict subsequent change in drinking behavior.

Heavy alcohol use and related consequences are common during the college years and are associated with deleterious outcomes for both the students themselves and the college community. Some college students make self-initiated changes to their drinking to avoid such outcomes, but little is known about how such adjustments occur, or characteristics that are associated with making these adjustments. Based on Social Learning Theory (SLT), one cognitive factor that may predict within-person changes in drinking is the subjective evaluations of alcohol consequences (i.e., the extent to which conseque…

A Replication and Extension of the Factor Structure of the Masculine Drinking Norms Measure (MDNM) and Associations with Drinking Behaviors in a Multisite Sample of College Men.

Gender-specific norms are learned, which can influence social norms, attitudes, and behaviors in specific situations. For example, men who conform to certain masculine norms/ideals may express their masculinity by drinking alcohol. Recent research indicates that endorsement of alcohol-specific masculine norms is mixed when predicting men's risk for heavy consumption and adverse alcohol-related outcomes. Using a large, college sample of self-identified men (n=1350; M age=20.10/SD=1.80; 12 universities), we examined the psychometric properties of the Masculine Drinking Norms Measure-MNDM, and th…

Domestication of drinking: a survey study of changes in types of drinking occasions during periods of increasing and decreasing alcohol consumption in the 2000s in Finland.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In Finland, per-capita alcohol consumption increased in the early 2000s and decreased after 2007. Our aim was to determine how these changes originated from changes in drinking practices. DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional general-population surveys. SETTING: Finland in 2000, 2008 and 2016. PARTICIPANTS: Finnish residents aged 15-69 years (n = 6703, response rate 59-78%). MEASUREMENTS: Event-level data on drinking occasions (n = 21 097). Types of drinking occasions (drinking practices) were identified with latent class analysis using occasion characteristics. The aggrega…

Parental supply of sips and whole drinks of alcohol to adolescents and associations with binge drinking and alcohol-related harms: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Parents frequently supply alcohol to their children, often only sips. We investigated whether supply of sips and whole drinks, from parents and other sources, are differentially associated with subsequent drinking outcomes. METHODS: A cohort of 1910 adolescents (mean age 12.9yrs) were surveyed annually over seven years from 2010-11. We examined prospective, adjusted associations between the quantity of supply from parental and non-parental sources in the preceding 12 months and five outcomes in the subsequent year, over several consecutive years: binge drinking; alcohol-related ha…

Orofacial Drinking Tremor: A Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Task-specific orofacial tremor is a rare condition in which rhythmic oscillations of orofacial muscles occur during specific actions. Drinking tremor represents a recurrent pattern in isolated reports, although its phenomenology and underlying mechanisms remain incompletely defined. CASES: We report three cases of orofacial drinking tremor, each showing a different pattern. Differences involved the distribution of orofacial muscle activity and the presence of additional signs, including tremor in other body regions or subtle dystonic postures. Variability in task dependence, postu…

Opportunistic Pathogens in Drinking Water Distribution Systems-A Review.

In contrast to "frank" pathogens, like Salmonella entrocolitica, Shigella dysenteriae, and Vibrio cholerae, that always have a probability of disease, "opportunistic" pathogens are organisms that cause an infectious disease in a host with a weakened immune system and rarely in a healthy host. Historically, drinking water treatment has focused on control of frank pathogens, particularly those from human or animal sources (like Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, or Hepatitis A virus), but in recent years outbreaks from drinking water have increasingly been due to opportunistic pathogens. C…

Case-control study of drinking water quality in Yemen.

BACKGROUND: Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities collapsed in Yemen due to the 2015 war, causing acute safe water shortage, poor sanitation and hygiene, and degraded microbial water quality. The cholera outbreaks in 2016/2017 triggered emergency WASH interventions to improve water quality and reduce cholera and other water-borne disease incidence. AIM: This study aimed to assess the microbial water quality in Sana'a, Yemen, following cessation of the WASH activities. METHODS: We collected and analysed water samples in 2022 from 64 out of the 381 mini water purification plants that

Binge drinking in early adulthood: A machine learning approach.

Binge drinking among young adults (18-25) has been recognized as a public health concern. Considerable variation among drinking behaviors have been found among this group. Several statistical methods are available to identify theoretically and empirically meaningful correlates of binge drinking. The present study evaluated three methods for identifying correlates of binge drinking, comparing logistic regression to two machine learning methods-classification tress and random forests. While each model identified similar correlates of binge drinking-such as propensity for engaging in risky behavi…

Gender Differences in Binge Drinking: Prevalence, Predictors, and Consequences.

Just as binge drinking rates differ for men and women, the predictors and consequences of binge drinking vary by gender as well. This article examines these differences and how binge drinking definitions and research samples and methods may influence findings. It also describes the relationship between age and binge drinking among men and women, and how drinking culture and environment affect this relationship. It examines gender-specific trends in binge drinking, predictors of binge drinking for men and women, and binge drinking in the context of smoking. The article reviews current findings …

Borderline personality disorder and regularly drinking alcohol before sex.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Drinking alcohol before sex increases the likelihood of engaging in unprotected intercourse, having multiple sexual partners and becoming infected with sexually transmitted infections. Borderline personality disorder (BPD), a complex psychiatric disorder characterised by pervasive instability in emotional regulation, self-image, interpersonal relationships and impulse control, is associated with substance use disorders and sexual risk behaviours. However, no study has examined the relationship between BPD and drinking alcohol before sex in the USA. This study examined th…

Effects of drinking-water filtration on Cryptosporidium seroepidemiology, Scotland.

Continuous exposure to low levels of Cryptosporidium oocysts is associated with production of protective antibodies. We investigated prevalence of antibodies against the 27-kDa Cryptosporidium oocyst antigen among blood donors in 2 areas of Scotland supplied by drinking water from different sources with different filtration standards: Glasgow (not filtered) and Dundee (filtered). During 2006-2009, seroprevalence and risk factor data were collected; this period includes 2007, when enhanced filtration was introduced to the Glasgow supply. A serologic response to the 27-kDa antigen was found for …
