[Textual research on Xilei Powder].

Xilei Powder is a commonly used prescription for the treatment of oral ulcers, and is originally used to treat scarlet fever. Scarlet fever is a warm-toxin disease from the perspective of the theory of warm disease. It is a warm infectious disease caused by epidemic. Xilei Powder was recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia from 1953 edition to 2010 edition. As China joined Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES), Xilei Powder was removed from the Chinese Pharmacopoeia of 2015 edition due to the limitation of the use of animal drugs, such as ivory an

Epidemiological trend in scarlet fever incidence in China during the COVID-19 pandemic: A time series analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past decade, scarlet fever has caused a relatively high economic burden in various regions of China. Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) are necessary because of the absence of vaccines and specific drugs. This study aimed to characterize the demographics of patients with scarlet fever, describe its spatiotemporal distribution, and explore the impact of NPIs on the disease in the era of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China. METHODS: Using monthly scarlet fever data from January 2011 to December 2019, seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA), a

High-frequency temperature monitoring at home using a wearable device: A case series of early fever detection and antibiotic administration for febrile neutropenia with bacteremia.

We present a case series of three febrile episodes in neutropenic pediatric cancer patients who wore a Food and Drug Administration approved high-frequency temperature monitoring (HFTM) wearable device (WD) at home. The WD detected fever events when temperature monitoring by thermometer did not detect fever or was not feasible to perform. Two of the episodes were associated with bloodstream infections and the WD detected fevers 5 and 12 h prior to fevers detected by thermometer, triggering earlier medical evaluation and more prompt administration of antibiotics. These observations provide a ba

A Comprehensive Study to Unleash the Putative Inhibitors of Serotype2 of Dengue Virus: Insights from an In Silico Structure-Based Drug Discovery.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that claims the lives of millions of people around the world. A number of factors like disease's non-specific symptoms, increased viral mutation, growing antiviral drug resistance due to reduced susceptibility, unavailability of an effective vaccine for dengue, weak immunity against the virus, and many more are involved. Dengue belongs to the Flaviviridae family of viruses. The two species of the vector transmitting dengue are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, with the former one being dominant. Serotypes 2 of dengue fever are spread to the human body

Allopurinol-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis featuring almost 60% skin detachment.

RATIONALE: Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a life-threatening, immunologically mediated, and usually drug-induced disease. Rarely, clinical pharmacists participating in finding the etiology have been reported. PATIENTS CONCERNS: A 33-year-old male presented to the emergency department with a 1-day history of fever and rash. The patient, being newly diagnosed with gout 10 days ago, received allopurinol at a dose of 250 mg by mouth daily. After 10 days' exposure to allopurinol, the patient manifested with an "influenza-like" prodromal phase (fever of 38°C, throat pains), which was treated w

Progress in the experimental therapy of severe arenaviral infections.

A number of viruses in the family Arenaviridae cause severe illness in humans. Lassa virus in West Africa and a number of agents in South America produce hemorrhagic fever in persons exposed to aerosolized excretions of the pathogens' rodent hosts. Because arenaviruses are not transmitted by arthropods, and person-to-person spread is rare, human infections occur singly and sporadically, and are usually not diagnosed until the patient is severely ill. Because the arenaviruses are naturally transmitted by the airborne route, they also pose a potential threat as aerosolized bioterror weapons. The

How to identify DRESS, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms?

DRESS (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms) is a rare, severe multiorgan adverse drug reaction. Antiepileptic age's and antibiotics are the most frequently reported causative agents. Compared with other drug reactions, DRESS demonstrates a long latency period thus complicating recognition and diagnosis. DRESS is defined as presence of fever, skin eruption, hematologic abnormalities and systemic involvement, especially liver injury. Withdrawal of the culprit drug, commencement of systemic corticosteroid and supportive care are the mainstay of treatment. The majority of patient

Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment of Rocky Mountain spotted fever are reviewed. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a severe infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii transmitted to man by various species of ticks. High-incidence areas exist in the southeast and south central United States. Only 60-70% of patients with the disease report a history of tick bite or exposure to tick-infested areas. The disease is initially characterized by fever, headache, gastrointestinal complaints, myalgia, and a generalized rash. In several days generalized vasculitis may lead to pe

Septic arthritis of the hip in a Cambodian child caused by multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi with intermediate susceptibility to ciprofloxacin treated with ceftriaxone and azithromycin.

Septic arthritis is a rare complication of typhoid fever. A 12-year-old boy without pre-existing disease attended a paediatric hospital in Cambodia with fever and left hip pain. A hip synovial fluid aspirate grew multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica ser. Typhi with intermediate susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. Arthrotomy, 2 weeks of intravenous ceftriaxone and 4 weeks of oral azithromycin led to resolution of symptoms. The optimum management of septic arthritis in drug-resistant typhoid is undefined.

Ribavirin prophylaxis and therapy for experimental argentine hemorrhagic fever.

Junin virus-infected rhesus macaques received prophylactic and therapeutic ribavirin to assess the potential of this drug for treating humans with Argentine hemorrhagic fever. When ribavirin was administered intramuscularly at the time of experimental infection with the lethal P3790 strain of Junin virus, all animals were protected from clinical disease. A delay in the initiation of therapy until after the onset of illness resulted in improvement and resolution of systemic signs of disease; however, survivors subsequently developed a late-onset central nervous system infection which was fatal

Paroxysmal autonomic dysregulation with fever that was controlled by propranolol in a brain neoplasm patient.

Intractable fever in cancer patients is problematic and the causes of this fever can be diverse. Paroxysmal persistent hyperthermia after sudden mental change or neurologic deficit can develop via autonomic dysregulation without infection or any other causes of fever. Paroxysmal hyperthermic autonomic dysregulation is a rare disease entity. It manifests as a form of paroxysmal hypertension, fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, pupillary dilation, agitation and extensor posturing after traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, brain hemorrhage or brain neoplasm. We recently experienced a case of paroxys

Clinical effectiveness of peramivir in comparison with other neuraminidase inhibitors in pediatric influenza patients.

The currently used antivirals in the treatment of influenza in Japan include amantadine, oseltamivir, zanamivir, laninamivir, and peramivir. We compared the efficacy of intravenous peramivir with that of other neuraminidase inhibitors for treating pediatric influenza. The present study included 223 influenza patients (≤18 years) who presented at the Hikita Pediatric Clinic between February and April 2011. We compared fever duration after starting treatment with antiviral drugs. Because inhalation drugs are difficult to use in <5-year-old patients and because of the potential adverse effects of

Drug hypersensitivity syndrome induced by meglumine antimoniate.

We report a case of drug hypersensitivity syndrome (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms [DRESS]) induced by parenteral meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime) in a 40-year-old man who traveled to Bolivia and was treated for mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Two weeks after starting therapy, the patient had fever, joint pain, a cutaneous eruption, and hypereosinophilia (1,358 cells/mm(3)). These symptoms resolved after drug withdrawal but reappeared upon reintroduction of the drug. Pentavalent antimonials should be definitively withdrawn in patients with hypereosinophilia > 1,000 cells/

Antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis.

Thyrotoxicosis is a common endocrine disorder. Antithyroid drug therapy is the standard treatment for this disease, especially in young women of reproductive age. A serious side effect of antithyroid drug use, however, is agranulocytosis. We report on two patients with antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis. Both patients presented with fever and severe neutropenia. The administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor resulted in a dramatic improvement in the white blood cell count and symptoms. Antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis is a potentially lethal condition but is complete

Persistent fever: Anti-KS syndrome overlaps with multidrug-resistant infections (MDRO) in a cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) patient.

A 62-year-old male patient with cervical spinal cord injury, developed multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia, Klebsiella pneumoniae infection, Clostridium difficile colitis and intestinal candidiasis. Despite targeted antibacterial drug treatment and some radiological improvements, he still experienced persistent fever and watery diarrhea. A careful re-examination revealed the mechanic's hand. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) showed interstitial lung disease (ILD) and anti-asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase (anti-KS) antibodies were identified upon laboratory evaluation. Cor
