Opioids and Disability Among Women of Reproductive Age.

Background: Despite nearly one in five U.S. women of reproductive age reporting a disability, limited research exists on opioid behaviors in this vulnerable population. This study examined associations between disability and past-year prescription opioid use and misuse, and described types of opioids, sources, and motives for opioid misuse among nonpregnant women of reproductive age. In addition, the effects of social, medical, and behavioral determinants of health on opioid use and misuse were assessed in this population of women with disabilities. Materials and Methods: Data were used from t

Exploring the impact of controlled substance restrictions on epilepsy care in the United States: A neurologist survey.

RATIONALE: Access to anti-seizure medications (ASMs) is critically important to patients with epilepsy (PWE), given that missed doses can lead to breakthrough seizures, morbidity, or mortality. Numerous ASMs are subject to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) scheduling regulations. Controlled substance restrictions present barriers to timely medication access. Scheduling restricts ASM access in myriad ways: biometric data and/or physical signature requirements, refill-too-soon policies, and mail-order availability may be restricted. We hypothesized that ASM misuse is rare, but there is

Introduction to Medication Effects on Male Reproduction.

The over-arching goal of this volume is to help infertility practitioners evaluate and manage their patients with poor semen quality. Medications can negatively impact on male reproduction and these effects are of increasing concern. People world-wide are using more medications than in the past, including men of childbearing age. In addition, men are fathering children later in life than previously, which is associated with greater medication use in the reproductive population. Finally, people are experiencing more chronic disease at earlier ages, particularly in developed countries. Taken tog

Abuse-deterrent formulations, an evolving technology against the abuse and misuse of opioid analgesics.

The increased use of opioid pain medication has been mirrored by the increased misuse and abuse of these drugs. As part of a multidisciplinary approach to this epidemic, pharmaceutical companies, with the encouragement of the Food and Drug Administration, have increased the development of abuse-deterrent formulations. While all have the goal of treating pain while mitigating misuse and abuse, there are different technologies utilized to impart the abuse-deterrent properties. The goal of this paper is to review the basis of abuse-deterrent formulations, the different types and approaches of som

Psychopathy Facets Differentially Predict Drug- and Alcohol-Related Problems Following Violent Injury.

Psychopathy is a multidimensional personality construct associated with substantial personal, familial, and societal burden. Among the various forms of psychopathology that co-occur with psychopathy, substance misuse represents one of its most prominent comorbidities. Despite growing interest in the psychopathy-substance misuse association, most facet-level studies have been cross-sectional or have relied on lifetime indices of substance involvement, limiting understanding of whether distinct psychopathy facets uniquely predict subsequent substance-related problem severity. The present study p

Trends in and Characteristics of Buprenorphine Misuse Among Adults in the US.

IMPORTANCE: There is a lack of empirical research regarding misuse of buprenorphine hydrochloride. OBJECTIVE: To identify prescription opioids that are most frequently misused, assess differences in motivations for misuse between buprenorphine and nonbuprenorphine prescription opioids, and examine trends in and factors associated with buprenorphine misuse among individuals with or without opioid use disorder (OUD). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study used nationally representative data on past-year prescription opioid use, misuse, OUD, and motivations for the most recent mis

Shared predictors of youthful gambling, substance use, and delinquency.

Given that gambling, alcohol misuse, other drug use, and delinquency are correlated, it is hypothesized that these problem behaviors have shared antecedents. Measures from 3 explanatory domains--sociodemographic factors (age, race, and socioeconomic status), individual factors (impulsivity and moral disengagement), and socialization factors (parental monitoring and peer delinquency)--were tested for links to problem behaviors in 2 longitudinal samples of adolescents. Black youth had lower levels of problem behaviors than Whites. Impulsivity was a significant predictor of alcohol misuse for fem

Substance use, substance use disorders, and treatment in adolescent and young adult cancer survivors-Results from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Substance use can exacerbate cancer-related morbidity and mortality in adolescent/young adult (AYA) cancer survivors and place them at increased risk for adverse health outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders [SUDs], as well as receipt of treatment for SUDs, among AYA cancer survivors. METHODS: The authors used data from the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (2015-2018) to identify a nationally representative sample of AYAs aged 12 to 34 years. Outcomes assessed past-year tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and illicit d

Childhood adversity and substance misuse.

There is a strong link between childhood adversity and subsequent substance misuse. We describe a case of childhood adversity consisting of physical and sexual abuse, experience of homelessness in childhood and adulthood, intimate partner violence and polysubstance misuse in a 32 year old woman currently attending the methadone maintenance programme in the Drug Treatment Centre Board, Trinity Court, Dublin. The relevant literature to the case is reviewed in relation to the aetiology and symptoms of this complex case.

Prescription opioid misuse, sources of opioids and reasons for opioid misuse among reproductive aged parenting women with major depressive episode.

The impact of the opioid epidemic has been particularly hard on reproductive-aged parenting women. Yet, very little is known about opioid use, opioid misuse and opioid use disorder among parenting women with major depressive episode (MDE). Information on sources of opioids intended for misuse and reasons for opioid misuse among this population is also lacking. Using the 2015-2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the study estimates a multinomial logistic regression model to investigate the association between MDE and opioid misuse as well as use disorder among reproductive-aged parentin

Adolescent drug abuse: helping families survive.

Drug use and abuse carries risk in people of all ages. However, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to substance misuse. Adolescent drug use continues to be an area of concern with a number of adolescents developing problems associated with the use of various drugs. Negative sequelae associated with adolescent drug use include areas such as schooling, health, and family relationships. Difficulties with the legal system, schooling, or within the family are commonly the triggers for recognition of substance misuse problems in a young person. However, problems are usually well-established bef

From Substance Use Disorders in Life to Autopsy Findings: A Combined Case-Record and Medico-Legal Study.

Objectives: Several studies have shown mortality and suicide risk in substance use disorders, and autopsy findings with respect to the used substances. However, there seems to be a gap in the knowledge about substances misused in life and at death at the within-person level. Methods: All consecutive, autopsied patients during 1993 to 1997, who had been in contact with the Addiction Centre in Malmö from 1968, were investigated (365 subjects). Drug misuse in the long-term course noted in case records was related to autopsy findings. Self-inflicted death (suicide/undetermined suicide/accidental o…

Pain Therapy Guided by Purpose and Perspective in Light of the Opioid Epidemic.

Prescription opioid misuse is an ongoing and escalating epidemic. Although these pharmacological agents are highly effective analgesics prescribed for different types of pain, opioids also induce euphoria, leading to increasing diversion and misuse. Opioid use and related mortalities have developed in spite of initial claims that OxyContin, one of the first opioids prescribed in the USA, was not addictive in the presence of pain. These claims allayed the fears of clinicians and contributed to an increase in the number of prescriptions, quantity of drugs manufactured, and the unforeseen diversi

Impact of pregnancy on psychoactive substance use among women with substance use disorders recruited in addiction specialized care centers in France.

Pregnancy can be a motivation for decrease in drug abusing but may also represent a period of high vulnerability for relapse. We aimed to assess psychoactive substance use among women with substance use disorders followed in addiction care centers in France. We analyzed data from women aged 15-44 years included in the 'Observation of illegal drugs and misuse of psychotropic medication (OPPIDUM) survey', an annual cross-sectional survey collecting details on psychoactive substances used. Characteristics of women included in 2005-2012 yearly surveys were compared depending on their pregnant or n

Prevalence and correlates of nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) among Young adults experiencing homelessness in seven cities across the United States.

BACKGROUND: Nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) is an urgent public health concern facing the United States. Young adults experiencing homelessness (YEH) are at increased risk of NMUPD; however, community estimates of NMUPD among YEH are sparse. This current study sought to understand patterns and correlates of NMUPD in a geographically heterogeneous sample of YEH recruited from seven cities across the United States. METHODS: From June 2016 to July 2017, 1,426 YEH (aged 18-26) were recruited from seven cities (Houston, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, New York City, St. Louis, San Jose)
