This study was undertaken to detect the occurrence of beta-lactamase and biofilm producing Enterobacteriaceae in healthy ducks. Following the first report of Opisthorchis viverrini infection in a domestic duck in Phu My District of Binh Dinh Province, Central Vietnam, many other cases were observed in the province. For 150 yr, Laysan Ducks were restricted to an estimated 4 km(2) of land on Laysan Island in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. An adenovirus was isolated from intestinal samples of two long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis) collected during a die-off in the Beaufort Sea off the north coast of Alaska in 2000. Geese and ducks were photosensitized by the ingestion of Ammi majus seeds, and exposure to sunlight. Mydriasis was a characteristic clinical feature of this syndrome in both species. Histologically the iris of the affected birds showed vacuolisation and varying degrees of atrophy of the muscle of the sphincter pupillae. The effect of pilocarpine and physostigmine on the normal and mydriatic eyes was studied. The possible mode of action of photosensitization and the significance of these findings in the light of the use of psoralens in human medicine is discussed.

This study examines a fractionated feeding protocol and analyzes its effects on feed intake and hepatic energy storage in mule ducks. The protocol was applied to 140 animals and included a 5-day acclimation phase with time-restricted feeding (1 h without quantitative restriction), followed by 21 one-hour meals delivered every 12 h, characterized as the fattening phase.
