Bilateral inner ear damage after electrical injury: A case report.

Electrical injury occurs as a result of direct contact with an electrical source. We present the case of a 62-year-old male patient, an electrician by profession, who was hit by a high-voltage electrical current while working with cables in proximity to a wet floor. The patient suffered from immediate loss of consciousness and five days later he started complaining of slight hearing loss, persistent vertigo, instability and bilateral tinnitus. A thorough audiological and vestibular examination revealed an extensive bilateral vestibulocochlear dysfunction. The exact pathogenetic mechanisms of i

Hair-bundle proteomes of avian and mammalian inner-ear utricles.

Examination of multiple proteomics datasets within or between species increases the reliability of protein identification. We report here proteomes of inner-ear hair bundles from three species (chick, mouse, and rat), which were collected on LTQ or LTQ Velos ion-trap mass spectrometers; the constituent proteins were quantified using MS2 intensities, which are the summed intensities of all peptide fragmentation spectra matched to a protein. The data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifiers PXD002410 (chick LTQ), PXD002414 (chick Velos), PXD002415 (mouse Velos), and PXD002416 (rat LTQ)

[Fluoroscopic assisted cochlear implantation in children with inner ear malformations].

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants are the treatment of choice for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. In most cases, the anatomy is normal and the insertion of the electrode-array is straightforward, complete and in the correct position. In the presence of inner-ear malformations, the risk of an intra or extra-cochlear malpositioned electrode-array increases. OBJECTIVES: To describe the technique of fluoroscopic assisted cochlear implantation in children with severe inner-ear malformations and present the results with respect to the number of active electrodes and func

Temporomandibular joint disorder and inner ear pruritus: resolution by eminectomy.

Recurrent dislocation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk is caused by many factors. Dislocation can result in an acute or chronic closed lock condition. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is often presented with otalgia symptoms. Other aural symptoms such as deafness, tinnitus, pressure/blockage, and vertigo are also commonly presented together with TMJ dysfunction (Clin Otolaryngol Allied Sci. 1980;5:23-36). However, pruritus associated with TMJ dysfunction in the inner ear has never been reported in the literature. We report a case history of TMJ dysfunction and associated inner ear

Inner ear insult suppresses the respiratory response to carbon dioxide.

Compensated respiratory acidosis has been observed in a significant number of patients with active vestibular disease. We therefore hypothesized that the inner ear may play an unrecognized integral role in respiratory control. To test this premise, we investigated whether mice with induced inner ear injury demonstrated any alteration in their respiratory response to inhaled carbon dioxide (CO(2)). Experimental mice and control mice were included in two separate experiments. Intra-tympanic gentamycin injections were administered to induce inner ear damage in experimental animals. Hearing loss a

Topical ocular drug delivery to inner ear disease and sinusitis.

Oral steroids are the main therapy for sensorineural deafness. We present the rare case of a patient whose hearing loss associated with inflammation of the inner ear and chronic sinusitis were improved with topical steroid therapy. A 68-year-old male presented with scleritis in the left eye, inflammation of the inner ear and chronic sinusitis. He received oral prednisolone 10 mg/d. However, the oral prednisolone was discontinued due to severe side effects. Topical administration of 0.1% betamethasone sodium phosphate improved the scleritis and incidentally also relieved his symptoms of recurre

Inner ear changes with intracochlear gentamicin administration in Guinea pigs.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Transtympanic administration of gentamicin is reported to be a useful treatment for vertigo in such conditions as Meniere's disease, and determining appropriate clinical dosage of gentamicin is difficult. The authors examined the relation between gentamicin dosages and inner ear function in guinea pigs. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a basic science project designed to examine cochlear and vestibular function in animal models. METHODS: Various concentrations of gentamicin solution were infused into the right inner ear of guinea pigs by osmotic pumps. Caloric nystagmus as

Inner ear morphology in a bilaterally deaf Dogo Argentino pup.

Two bilaterally deaf and three unilaterally deaf pups were identified from a litter of 10 Dogo Argentino pups presented for hearing evaluation by electrophysiological investigation. One pup, a bilaterally deaf female aged 43 days, was available for histopathology. Examination of both inner ears revealed bilateral cochlear degeneration with atrophy of the stria vascularis, collapse of the cochlear duct, degeneration of the organ of Corti, and abnormal tectorial membrane. The left vestibule, including the sacculus, was normal. The spiral and vestibular ganglia were essentially normal. This is th

Inflammatory signals increase Fas ligand expression by inner ear cells.

There is considerable evidence that hearing and vestibular function can be influenced by immune processes. The inner ear has evolved mechanisms, such as the blood-labyrinthine barrier that limit immune responses and autoimmune processes to reduce the potential for damage to cochlear cells. Recently, expression of Fas ligand (FasL) in some non-lymphoid tissue, as in the anterior chamber of the eye, has been hypothesized to play a role in protection of sensitive organs from activated T-cells. We show that under resting conditions, cochlear cells express little or no FasL. However, after exposure

Inner ear involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: a prospective clinical study.

Sensorineural hearing loss in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been reported to be the result of the extra-articular manifestation of the disease (rheumatoid nodular vasculitis) or due to drug ototoxicity. In an attempt to investigate the presence of sensorineural hearing loss and the possible causes for it we investigated prospectively 45 RA patients (42 female; three male) with a mean age of 52.5 +/- 10.7 years and a mean disease duration of 8.5 +/- 7.3 years. All patients underwent a complete physical examination and audiological evaluation which included pure tone audiometry and impedance aud

Expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 during inner ear inflammation.

This study was designed to investigate the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on the spiral modiolar vein (SMV) with its collecting venules (CVs) and the venules of the endolymphatic sac during inner ear inflammation. These data will further elucidate the role of adhesion molecules in extravasation of inflammatory cells from blood vessels during an inner ear immune response. Labyrinthitis was induced in rats by inoculation of keyhole limpet hemocyanin into the scala tympani of animals who had been systemically sensitized to it. Expression of ICAM-1 was examined with a mou

Inner ear damage from toy cap pistols and fire-crackers.

Groups of guinea pigs comprising 7 animals in each group were exposed to 10, 50 or 100 exposures to fire-crackers or 10, 50 or 100 exposures to toy cap pistol shots. An additional group of 7 animals comprised the control material. The exposures were performed with 15-s intervals at 0.25 m distance for the toy cap pistol shots and at 0.8 m for the fire-crackers. The peak sound level at the ear was 155 dBC for both impulsive sounds. After a 3-week survival period the animals were anesthetized and decapitated. The cochleas were examined histologically in surface preparations and read double-blind

[Improved inner ear diagnosis by controlled use of computerized tomography].

Problems in the examination of the inner ear using conventional CT are described. Intraoperative findings often differ from CT findings. A new development HR-CT is introduced. Findings of middle and inner ear malformations and otosclerosis are demonstrated. It is shown that HR-CT imaging using a new 1024 matrix, enables better spatial resolution. This new CT technique improves inner ear examination, especially in the preparation for cochlear implantation.

Clinical significance of SP/AP ratio in inner ear diseases.

Electrocochleogram was recorded from 28 ears affected by Ménière's disease , 27 ears affected by sensorineural hearing loss resulting from hair cell damage and 22 normal ears as controls in response to tone bursts in order to evaluate diagnostic significance of the summating potential/action potential (SP/AP) ratio and the SP amplitude. The fundamental aspects of the SP/AP ratio were studied in relation to frequency, intensity and rate of tone burst stimuli. It was concluded from present results that the SP/AP ratio can be a useful indicator to detect -SP dominance, while the SP amplitude can

[Middle and inner ear barotrauma caused by scubadiving (author's transl)].

On the basis of our own experiences and the current literature, the following guidelines were established for the evaluation of scubadivers: 1. The ENT physical examination must include otoscopy and the valsalva manoeuver. The scubadiver should be able to promptly and symmetrically inflate his middle ear spaces. A central perforation is a relative contraindication, while a marginal ear drum perforation is an absolute contraindication for scubadiving. 2. Recommendations to the diver: Ear pressure equalibration should be performed continuously with increasing and decreasing water depth. Ear plug

[Protects stapedectomy from increasing otosclerotic inner ear deafness? (author's transl)].

The favourable influence--first shown by Shambaugh--of fenestration operation used in cases of the otosclerosis which cause a rapid sensorineural hearing loss can also be stated for stapedectomy. A negative influence of stapedectomy on inner ear stability was not determined. Especially the ears whose inner ear function is very bad were favoured by this operation.

[Inner ear hearing loss following blunt head injury (author's transl)].

The pathologenesis of inner ear hearing loss after head injury is not uniform. Recent experimental and clinical findings in ophthalmology, neuropathology and neurosurgery indicate that there is not only a direct mechanical caused damage but as well an indirect injury of the inner ear secondary to disturbances of the cerebral blood supply. These cases representing about 30% of the patients are characterized by fluctuating hearing loss, which may increase of decrease even weeks or months after the incident. To assist inner ear microcirculation after head injury we therefore suggest to try an ear

Neuroanatomical aspects of the gerbil inner ear: light microscope observations.

A specialization of the Mongolian gerbil inner ear allows easy access for electrophysiological recording from the auditory nerve and other structures of the internal auditory meatus. The round-window membrane is recessed, creating a cavity connecting the bulla and the external wall of the modiolus. This cavity has been named the round-window antrum. A small opening made in the dorsomedial wall of the round-window antrum gives access directly to the modiolus and internal auditory meatus, with no other openings in the cranium required. This surgery is less drastic than that needed for similar ac
