Health Disparity Still Exists in an Economically Well-Developed Society in Asia.

BACKGROUND: The socioeconomic inequalities in child health continue to widen despite improved economy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between socio-economic factors and health risk behaviors and psychosocial well-being of children in Hong Kong. HYPOTHESIS: The null hypothesis is that for this particular developed region, there exists little or no correlation between social-economic factors and health risk behaviors and psychosocial well-being of children. DESIGN: Cross sectional territory wide survey. PARTICIPANTS: Caregivers of 7,000 children in kindergartens in Hong Kong. MEA

Suicidal behavior in black South Africans.

In the past suicidal behavior among Black South Africans has been largely underresearched. Earlier studies among the other main ethnic groups in the country showed suicidal behavior in those groups to be a serious problem. This article briefly reviews some of the more recent research on suicidal behavior in Black South Africans. The results indicate an apparent increase in suicidal behavior in this group. Several explanations are offered for the change in suicidal behavior in the reported clinical populations. This includes past difficulties for all South Africans to access health care facilit

Electronic gambling engagement and psychosocial outcomes among students at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria: a theory of planned behavior perspective.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The proliferation of electronic gambling in Nigeria presents a significant public health concern among youths facing economic adversity. This study applied the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to investigate the socio-cognitive drivers and self-reported psychosocial consequences of electronic gambling engagement among students at the University of Ibadan. Electronic gambling is defined here as any gambling activity conducted through electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and computers, encompassing mobile sports betting applications, web-based casino platfor

Integrating smoking cessation into HIV care settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis of effectiveness and the evidence gap in cost-effectiveness.

The prevalence of smoking among people living with HIV (PLWH) is higher than in the general population, and PLWH who smoke are at increased risk of both smoking- and HIV-related comorbidities. As most PLWH reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there is a need for effective and cost-effective smoking cessation interventions in resource-constrained settings. We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions for PLWH and looked for economic evaluations. Four databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science) were searched up to March

Does asset ownership influence sexual risk-taking behaviors among women engaged in sex work in Southern Uganda? A mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Economic vulnerability influences women engaged in commercial sex work (WESW) to further engage in sexual risk behaviors, as they often have multiple customers and engage in unprotected sex for financial gains. This study examined asset ownership's direct and indirect impact on sexual risk-taking behaviors among WESW in Southern Uganda, a very vulnerable group of women at high risk for contracting HIV and other STIs. METHODOLOGY: We used baseline data from the Kyaterekera study, an NIH-funded study among WESW aged 18-55 across 19 HIV hotspots in Southern Uganda. Structural equatio

Substance use treatment completion does not mediate the relationship between family treatment court participation and reunification: Results from five courts in the Southwestern U.S.

BACKGROUND: Family treatment courts (FTC) apply judicial theory and behavioral economics to increase parent substance use treatment completion and family reunification for families in foster care due to parental substance use disorder. Dozens of quasi-experiments and case studies suggest FTC programs outperform traditional child welfare courts. However, methodological limitations in earlier research limit causal inference. STUDY PURPOSE: The current study aimed to examine the relationship between FTC participation and family reunification, and to investigate whether substance use treatment co

Parental risk preferences and children's vaccination coverage.

This paper examines vaccine hesitancy from a behavioral economics perspective, focusing on how parental risk preferences, altruism, and vaccine distrust affect children's vaccination rates. A model of parental investment in children's health is developed and expanded using empirical data from WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Global Preferences Survey. The study utilizes a fractional response probit model to analyze data from 69 countries, accounting for both stringent and non-stringent vaccination policies. Results show that risk aversion, altruism, and trust are positively associated with

The psychological toll of financial volatility: compulsive habits, gambling parallels, and social policy implications.

This mini-review synthesizes recent interdisciplinary evidence showing that financial market volatility carries psychological as well as economic costs. Across 36 studies, two domains emerge: (1) traditional market turbulence, where shocks are linked to economic anxiety, household stress transmission, and panic-selling associated with traits such as neuroticism and hyperbolic discounting; and (2) cryptocurrency and speculative asset markets, where Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), impulsivity, and herding promote short-term, gambling-like risk taking, particularly among younger or inexperienced inve

Perceived economic strain exacerbates the effect of paternal depressed mood on hostility.

Depression in fathers has been associated with impaired parenting, which, in turn, may function as a central environmental mechanism underlying the adverse effects of paternal depression on children's development. Despite this, evidence suggests that many depressed fathers are able to maintain positive relationships with their children, and little is known about factors associated with better or worse parenting outcomes when fathers experience depression. Using two waves of prospective, longitudinal data from a community sample of fathers and their high school-aged adolescent offspring (N = 32

The Beijing Twin Study (BeTwiSt): a longitudinal study of child and adolescent development.

Rates of emotional and behavioral problems among children and adolescents in China are increasing and represent a major public health concern. To investigate the etiology of such problems, including the effects and interplay of genes and environment, the Beijing Twin Study (BeTwiSt) was established. A representative sample of adolescent twins in Beijing (N = 1,387 pairs of adolescent twins, mostly between the ages of 10 and 18 years) was recruited and assessed longitudinally. Data collection included the following: emotional and behavioral problems (e.g., depressive symptoms, anxiety, delinque

Non-invasive dual-brain stimulation facilitates social cooperation through enhancing interpersonal neural synchronization.

Reciprocal altruism-based cooperation is ubiquitous among humans and plays a crucial role in the survival and evolutionary trajectories of human beings. Prior research has been capable of comprehending social cooperation by examining the patterns of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during real bidirectional social interactions, rather than focusing on single-brain responses to external stimuli. However, the causal influence of INS on cooperative strategic behaviors remains unclear. To address this gap, we directly modulated the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ)'s INS between indi

Longitudinal patterns of behavior, cognition, and quality of life after mild traumatic brain injury in children: BIONIC study findings.

Background: Research following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) during childhood predominantly examines recovery up to 12 months post-injury. Objectives: To determine children's longer-term (4 years) patterns and predictors of recovery. Methods: Parents of 196 children (aged 1-15 years) completed the Behaviour Assessment System for Children and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory at baseline, 1, 6, 12, and 48 months post-injury. Children aged ≥8 years at each assessment completed a computerized neurocognitive testing battery. At 1 month, parents completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression

Effect on Health Care Costs for Adolescents Receiving Adjunctive Internet-Delivered Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

UNLABELLED: The economic burden of pediatric chronic pain is high, with an estimated annual cost of $19.5 billion. Little is known about whether psychological treatment for pediatric chronic pain can alter health care utilization for youth. The primary aim of this secondary data analysis was to evaluate the effect of adjunctive internet cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention or adjunctive internet education on health care-related economic costs in a cohort of adolescents with chronic pain recruited from interdisciplinary pain clinics across the United States. For the full sample, health car

A prospective study of risk and protective factors for substance use among impoverished women living in temporary shelter settings in Los Angeles County.

Alcohol and drug use are significant public health problems facing homeless women, but few prospective studies have examined risk and protective factors for substance use in this population. This 6-month prospective study identified psychosocial, behavioral, and economic predictors of drinking to intoxication, crack use, and marijuana use in a probability sample of 402 women living in temporary shelter settings in Los Angeles County with a simple majority of homeless residents (92% of these women had a history of homelessness). Engaging in sexual risk behavior and having depressive symptoms we

Effects of the pandemic and economic crisis on public search trends related to oral and maxillofacial surgery in Türkiye: a Google Trends time-series analysis (2020-2025).

BACKGROUND: Large-scale societal disruptions, including pandemics and economic crises, profoundly influence healthcare-seeking behavior. Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) comprises both essential and elective procedures and is therefore particularly sensitive to external pressures. This study investigated how the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic downturn affected public interest in OMS-related procedures in Türkiye via Google Trends. METHODS: This observational digital epidemiology time series study analyzed weekly relative search volume (RSV) data for four OMS-related keywords (“w

Identifying decision-making biases in self-care behaviours among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A qualitative study from a behavioural economics perspective.

BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus often make self-care behaviour decisions according to their immediate needs and desires in the real world. Deviations from optimal choices in seeking satisfying options are known as decision-making biases, which are not obvious in the self-care behaviours of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Qualitative research can provide insights into patients' descriptions of and experiences in self-care, aiding in systematically identifying decision-making biases. OBJECTIVE: To identify the decision-making biases of patients with type 2 diabetes me

Changes in Price, Consumption, Prevalence, and State Revenue of Transitioning Cigarette Sales to State-Controlled Outlets.

INTRODUCTION: Policies that phase out the retail sale of tobacco products have been recommended to accelerate the tobacco endgame and reach negligible tobacco use rates. Using simulation modeling, this study assessed how a policy that transitions cigarette sales to state-controlled outlets may change prices and thus affect state revenue, cigarette pack sales, and smoking prevalence. METHODS: Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and Tax Burden On Tobacco, models were developed to examine 3 potential scenarios resulting from a policy that transitions the sales of cigar
