Mercury (Hg) concentrations in four commercial fish species (Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, Spiny Eel Mastacembelus armatus, African catfish Clarias gariepinus, and Sahar Tor putitora), were investigated in Lake Phewa, Nepal. Mean values of total mercury (THg mg kg(-1), ww) in these fishes were 0.02, 0.07, 0.05, and 0.12 respectively. Methylmercury contributed 82 % of THg. The lowest value was detected in O. niloticus, an exclusive plant feeder. The biomagnification rate of Hg through the fish community was 0.041 per δ(15)N (‰). The study on the recognition of 35S-labelled somatic antigens of Gnathostoma spinigerum advanced third-stage larva (aL3) has revealed that the mAb GN6/24 immunoprecipitated 26- and 24-kDa proteins from the undigested and N-glycosidase F-digested larval extracts, respectively. The recognition of the deglycosylated form of the glycoprotein indicated that the mAb reacted with the peptide epitope on the 26-kDa protein. Human gnathostomiasis antiserum immunoprecipitated most of the N-glycosidase F-digested larval proteins including the deglycosylated 26-kDa protein.

Gnathostomiasis is a helminthic disease most frequently occurring in Thailand. Human infections are usually found to be caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum, although five species of the genus Gnathostoma exist in Thailand, and three of these are capable of infecting man. Methyl-, ethyl- and phenyl mercury, total mercury and fat content were determined in fish fillet of the five different fish species: eel, perch, roach, chub and barbel. The organo mercury compounds were extracted according to a modified Westöö method and determined by using HPLC-cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometrie.
