Electrolyte and renal changes in severe potassium depletion.

This report describes electrolyte changes and some clinical aspects of the renal disease associated with the loss of potassium through the gastrointestinal tract in 2 patients with diarrhea. In one of them, the diarrhea resulted from non-tropical sprue, in the other, from non-beta islet-cell adenoma of pancreas. In both patients, some observations were repeated after potassium repletion.

Electrolyte-Regulated Conversion of Small Resource Molecules.

Electrocatalysis powered by renewable electricity is a promising strategy for clean energy transformation and achieving carbon neutrality goals. In resource molecules conversion (e.g., CO2 and NO3 -), electrolytes serve multiple roles as reaction media, proton donors, and mass-transport carriers, with their composition and physicochemical properties exerting a significant influence on reaction pathways, intermediate stability, and product selectivity. Most research endeavors have predominantly concentrated on catalyst design, often oversimplifying electrolytes as inert backgrounds. This minire…

Adaptive ionic moieties for electrolyte structural design.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are now an established and ubiquitous material class. In energy applications and electroresponsive lubrication, their interfacial self-assembly is crucial for their properties. This in turn is determined by chemical structure and a local hierarchy of Coulombic, van der Waals, and solvophobic interactions. We hypothesize that delocalization of the ionic charge permits the Coulombic interactions to adapt to other self-assembly imperatives, promoting both bulk and interfacial self-assembly structures and enhancing double layer responses. Novel chelated bis(catecholato)borate a

Highly Selective Electrolytic Reduction of CO2 to Ethylene.

We investigate the reduction of CO2 to ethylene across buffered anolyte pH values 4 to 14 using a copper-phosphorus (Cu-P) electrocatalyst in a zero-gap membrane electrode assembly. Electrochemical CO2 reduction using alkaline electrolytes typically shows limited carbon efficiencies and single-pass efficiencies, while acidic conditions typically favor the hydrogen evolution reaction. Results from this work show that weakly phosphate-buffered acidic anolytes (pH 6) maximize ethylene production with a 73% FE at 300 mA cm-2 and 51% FE at 500 mA cm-2, including a 51% single-pass CO2 conversion eff…

The Use of a Checklist to Optimize Electrolyte Replacement in the ICU.

Electrolyte replacement protocols are routinely used in intensive care units (ICU) to guide magnesium replacement. Guided by serum levels, these protocols include no patient-specific factors despite a literature showing ICU patients routinely have significant deficits despite normal serum levels. The authors developed a checklist to help identify patients requiring more aggressive magnesium replacement than the electrolyte replacement protocol would provide. The checklist included risk factors for having significant magnesium deficits and for developing arrhythmias. The checklist was retrospec

[Features of water-electrolyte component of the tear fluid].

Tear production is a complex multi-step process that can be arbitrarily divided into three stages: «primary» secretion by the acinar cells of the main lacrimal glands, formation of «secondary» lacrimal fluid in the ducts of the main lacrimal glands, and «tertiary» modification of the tear composition in the conjunctival sac. This article highlights mechanisms of water and electrolytes secretion in the process of tear fluid production and describes the particularities of distribution of the membrane transport proteins in the lacrimal gland and the ocular surface.

Evaluation of Serum Electrolyte Levels in Patients With Anemia.

INTRODUCTION: Anemia is one of the most prevalent diseases globally. Various diseases have linked anemia with electrolyte disturbance. However, the local data are limited. In this study, we will determine the prevalence of electrolyte imbalance in anemic patients. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital from January 2021 to July 2021. A total of 500 anemic patients were enrolled in the study after informed consent. Another 500 non-anemic patients were enrolled as the control group. Blood was taken from both groups and send for assessment of electrolytes. RE…

Renal physiology and fluid and electrolyte disorders in pregnancy.

The majority of women are healthy entering pregnancy and do not require measurement of renal function or serum electrolytes. Clinicians must remain alert to the possibility of renal as well as fluid and electrolyte disorders in pregnancy, as the presenting complaints are often vague and mistaken for the normal physiology of pregnancy. In this chapter, our objectives are 1) to review the renal physiology from a practical/clinical standpoint; 2) to provide the clinical obstetrician a case-based approach to fluid and electrolyte disorders commonly encountered in pregnancy; 3) to consolidate knowl…

Multiple Electrolyte and Metabolic Emergencies in a Single Patient.

While some electrolyte disturbances are immediately life-threatening and must be emergently treated, others may be delayed without immediate adverse consequences. We discuss a patient with alcoholism and diabetes mellitus type 2 who presented with volume depletion and multiple life-threatening electrolyte and metabolic derangements including severe hyponatremia (serum sodium concentration [SNa] 107 mEq/L), hypophosphatemia ("undetectable," <1.0 mg/dL), and hypokalemia (2.2 mEq/L), moderate diabetic ketoacidosis ([DKA], pH 7.21, serum anion gap [SAG] 37) and hypocalcemia (ionized calcium 4.0 mg
