INTRODUCTION: Alterations in surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle were evaluated in 24 non-manual workers and 40 manual workers (25 asymptomatic and 15 reporting CTS symptoms).
METHODS: The initial value (IV) and the normalized rate of change (NRC) of average rectified value (ARV), mean frequency of the power spectrum (MNF), and muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) were calculated during contractions at 20% and 50% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Neuromuscular efficiency (NME) and kurtosis of the sEMG amplitude distribution were estimated.

PURPOSE: Continuous electromyography (EMG) monitoring is a standard method for intraoperative monitoring of facial nerve function. Typically, only two or three bipolar channels are recorded from needle electrodes to detect pathologic activity, which may provide an incomplete sample. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of channel number on monitoring quality.
METHODS: The EMG data of 30 patients undergoing surgery for vestibular schwannoma were recorded using 9 bipolar channels from subdermal needle electrodes located in the orbicular oculi, oris, and nasal muscle. Pathologic A-train activit…

We present 2 case reports to demonstrate the relationship between laryngeal muscle activity and respiration in children with bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) by simultaneous laryngeal electromyography (EMG) with recording of chest wall movement and intercostal muscle EMG. Laryngeal EMG was performed together with recording of chest wall movement in a 55-day-old girl who was undergoing tracheostomy for idiopathic congenital BVFP. Normal phasic activity was observed, i.e., the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle was active during expiration and the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle during inspir…

We prospectively performed neurophysiologic studies in nine Fabry's Disease (FD) patients (8 male and 1 female) in order to describe the results of nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) and to verify whether the sympathetic skin response (SSR) is impaired in these patients. The investigation protocol included SSR, sensory and motor NCS and EMG. SSR was performed not only in FD patients, but also in 18 normal controls. All FD patients had normal nerve conduction studies and electromyography. SSR was present in all controls with a mean amplitude of 1453.6+/-682.3 microV. Howe…

Laryngeal electromyography was used to study the pattern of neurological injury in three patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis following radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The thyroarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles were assessed to give an indication of recurrent and superior laryngeal nerve function. Two patients demonstrated both recurrent and superior laryngeal neuropathy suggesting injury at the skull base. The other patient had only recurrent laryngeal neuropathy indicating more distal involvement. Subclinical neuropathic changes were seen in two cases on the side contral…

The diagnostic utility of motor unit potential (MUP) parameters is usually based exclusively on their diagnostic sensitivity, disregarding specificity. In the present study, advanced statistical methods were used to determine MUP parameters with the highest predictive power for the separation of neuropathic and normal external anal sphincter (EAS) muscles. Using multi-MUP analysis, 3,720 MUPs from 138 muscles of 52 patients with cauda equina lesion and 2,526 from 112 muscles of 64 controls were obtained. Only two principal components (PCs), which put weight on the MUP area and amplitude, were

The use of electromyography (EMG) is limited, particularly in the investigation of children, by the invasive nature of needle electrodes. Surface electrode techniques are an attractive alternative but the detected signals are greatly influenced by volume conductor effects, thus making their interpretation problematic. Using finite element analysis we investigated the relationship between surface potential distribution and motor unit depth, incorporating anisotropic conductivity to model muscle tissue and a range of subcutaneous fat thicknesses. The modeling results were used to analyze data re…

After resection of a malignant bone tumor of the femur, rotationplasty is considered a treatment option in addition to other limb salvage procedures such as endoprosthetic replacement, allograft, or autograft reconstruction. A Type B IIIa rotationplasty is indicated when the tumor involves the total femur or when skip lesions are detected. After the total femur is resected, the lateral tibial plateau is placed into the acetabulum after rotating the tibia and foot segment 180 degrees. Eight patients at an average age of 5.9 years underwent a rotationplasty Type B IIIa at the authors' institutio

Surface EMG is hardly used to estimate motor unit (MU) characteristics, while its non-invasiveness is less stressful for patients and allows multi-electrode recordings to investigate different sites of the muscle and MU. The present study compares motor unit potentials (MUPs) obtained with surface EMG and macro EMG during voluntary contraction of the biceps brachii muscle of patients with enlarged MUs caused by prior poliomyelitis. Averaged surface MUPs were obtained by means of needle EMG (SMUP1) and surface EMG (SMUP2) triggering. The MUPs area and peak amplitudes correlated well when compar

BACKGROUND: Spasticity assessment using surface electromyography (sEMG) is challenging in the upper limb of people with limited voluntary motor control. Standardized protocols are limited and it is not clear which method of normalization is the most appropriate for possibly informing clinical decision making.
METHODS: Elbow flexor muscle activity (spasticity) was assessed in 17 people following traumatic brain injury, stroke, or cerebral palsy. All participants underwent 3D motion analysis with synchronized sEMG during slow and fast passive stretches of the biceps brachii. Methods of comparis…

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Diagnosing neuromuscular disorders in children is challenging. Concentric needle electromyography (CNEMG) is the standard for electrophysiological assessments but has limitations in pediatric populations. High-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) provides a noninvasive technique with superior spatial resolution, enabling the identification and analysis of motor unit (MU) firing dynamics throughout the entire period of MU activity. This study assessed the feasibility of HDsEMG MU decomposition in children and explored parameters that differentiate neuropathy, myopathy, a…
