The Developing Human Sphenoid Bone: Linking Embryological Development to Adult Morphology.

The human sphenoid bone (SB), centrally located at the cranial base, is structurally and developmentally complex. It arises from multiple cartilaginous precursors and undergoes both endochondral and intramembranous ossification, forming essential elements such as the sella, orbital walls, and numerous foramina. This review integrates embryological, anatomical, and radiological findings to present a comprehensive view of SB development and variation. Embryological studies reveal a layered ossification sequence, with accessory centers in the presphenoid and basisphenoid that influence adult morp

In Vivo Shadows and In Vitro Light: The Early Embryological Journey Amid Endometriosis.

Endometriosis significantly impacts fertility through complex mechanisms. These include chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and anatomical distortion. These mechanisms impair oocyte quality, embryo development, and implantation. While in vivo challenges persist, in vitro fertilization (IVF) offers a controlled environment to overcome some barriers. A systematic review of evidence is presented for (1) endometriosis-associated oocyte dysfunction, (2) conflicting IVF outcomes, and (3) innovative strategies. Significant medical advancements have been made. However, gaps remain in personalized

Unusual nerve communication in gluteal region: embryological basis and clinical perspective.

The posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) has been widely studied with context to its origin, distribution and mononeuropathies. Due to the vulnerability of the gluteal region to iatrogenic injuries and pressure ulcers etc., an understanding of the cutaneous innervation of the gluteal region holds immense relevance. The communication between the PFCN and the inferior gluteal nerve (IGN) was observed at the back of thigh of a 56-year-old male cadaver while exploring distribution of nerves in gluteal region during routine anatomical dissection. The above communication holds importance in nume

Embryological-clinical classification of female genital tract malformations - a review and update.

Based on updated knowledge on genitourinary embryology and after analysing published cases of female urogenital malformations, including those deemed unclassifiable, the authors reviewed and updated their embryological-clinical classification of female genital tract malformations to include all cases with genital or genitourinary malformations. This classification includes: Class 1, abnormalities of the intermediate mesoderm, such as unilateral genitourinary agenesis or hypoplasia, and multiple mesodermal abnormalities; Class 2, mesonephric or Wolffian anomalies, including unilateral renal age…

CT and MR Appearance of Teeth: Analysis of Anatomy and Embryology and Implications for Disease.

Abnormalities of dental development and anatomy may suggest the presence of congenital or acquired anomalies. The detection of abnormalities, therefore, is an important skill for radiologists to achieve. Knowledge of dental embryology and an understanding of the radiologic appearances of teeth at various stages of maturation are required for the appreciation of abnormal dental development. While many tooth abnormalities are well-depicted on dedicated dental radiographs, the first encounter with a dental anomaly may be by a radiologist on a computed tomographic (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) e…

Portal Vein Variations, Clinical Correlation, and Embryological Explanation: A Review Article.

Portal vein (PV) is a large vein that collects blood from the abdominal part of gall bladder, pancreas, alimentary tract, and spleen and transports to the liver. One of the parts of the extraembryonic venous system, the vitelline veins, is where PV starts. In about five weeks of gestation, a venous plexus is formed, and variations in this plexus lead to portal variance. The junction of superior mesenteric and splenic veins is typically where the vein begins to network. There are five types of branching patterns of the right PV: conventional branching, trifurcation branching, early branching, s

Nasopharyngeal cyst in an adolescent boy: differential diagnosis - embryological and anatomical considerations.

In the current article, we present a case of an adolescent boy with a nasopharyngeal cyst that induced nasal and Eustachian tube obstruction. Nasopharyngeal cysts can be found incidentally during imaging examinations such as MRI; however, a symptomatic nasopharyngeal cyst is a rare finding in the paediatric population. The cyst was treated successfully by marsupialisation, and the histological diagnosis revealed an adenoidal retention cyst. The differential diagnosis of a nasopharyngeal cyst is always challenging since developmental cysts such as Rathke's pouch cysts, Torwaldt's and branchial

Insights into the Role of Telomeres in Human Embryological Parameters. Opinions Regarding IVF.

Telomeres promote genome integrity by protecting chromosome ends from the activation of the DNA damage response and protecting chromosomes from the loss of coding sequences due to the end replication problem. Telomere length (TL) is progressively shortened as age progresses, thus resulting in cellular senescence. Therefore, TL is in strong adverse linear correlation with aging. Mounting evidence supports the notion that telomeres and male/female infertility are in a close relationship, posing the biology of telomeres as a hot topic in the era of human-assisted reproduction. Specifically, the l

From cold-blooded reptiles to embryological remnants: Persistent myocardial sinusoids.

In nature, basically 2 types of myocardial vascular patterns exist: the sinusoidal and the coronary type. In the sinusoidal type, the sinusoid is completely fed by blood coming directly from the ventricle through a spongy sinusoidal network. This pattern is found in cold-blooded animals and in the early embryologic development of human (warm-blooded) hearts. A 61-year-old man with atrial fibrillation developed severe tachymyopathy with a severely reduced left-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 20%. The patient had no history of prior heart surgery or other cardiac interventions. He was re

An embryological point of view on associated congenital anomalies of children with Hirschsprung disease.

The most common congenital gut motility disorder is the Hirschsprung disease (HSCR). This anomaly is characterized by absence of neural crest-derived enteric neuronal ganglia. The aim of our study was to analyze the relationship between HSCR and other congenital anomalies or malfunctions. We examined 130 patients with Hirschsprung disease from Slovakia for last 10 years. During patients examination we focused not only on morphological abnormalities, but also functional anomalies. The incidence of associated congenital anomalies in our patients with HSCR was 26.1 %. But if we add functional def

Morphometric analysis of the middle meningeal artery organization in humans-embryological considerations.

The middle meningeal artery (MMA) is the largest branch of the internal maxillary artery supplying the meninges. The complex sequence of MMA development gives many opportunities for variant anatomy. Additionally, the variations in the origin of the MMA are of clinical importance when dealing with fractures of the base of the skull, epidural hematomas, and bypass procedures. Therefore, various anastomosis and aberrant origins of the MMA have been documented in literature. However, there are no reports about some morphometric aspects of this important arterial segment. Thus, in this study, we de

[Retrotracheal left pulmonary artery: case report with an embryologic and anatomic update].

The accidental discovery of a retrotracheal left pulmonary artery in a 4-month-old infant encouraged us to review the various embryologic theories concerning this very rare anomaly and perform an anatomic update in order to better define surgical treatment. Nathan underwent surgery for a bilateral inguinal hernia at the age of 4 months. The postoperative period was marked by malaise associated with dyspnoea, stridor, tachycardia and sweating. A X-ray of the thorax, oesophageal transit and angio scan presented an intertracheo-oesophageal left pulmonary artery and a reimplantation of the left pu

Images in clinical medicine congenital neural malformations related to their embryological background.

UNLABELLED: Congenital neural malformations are complex anomalies, which stem from an abnormality in the embryological development of the nervous system. The development of the nervous system begins by the formation of the neural tube and its subsequent closure. The failure of closure results in neural tube defects (NTD). Defect in the formation of prosencehalon or rhombencephalon will result in holoprosencephaly or Dandy walker complex respectively. The formation of neuroblasts and their migration to cerebral cortex may be altered by many neuronal migration disorders. Lissencephaly, schizence
