This article is devoted to the MR imaging evaluation of spine emergencies, defined as spinal pathologic conditions that pose an immediate risk of significant morbidity or mortality to the patient if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. MR imaging plays a central role in the timely diagnosis of spine emergencies. A summary of MR imaging indications and MR imaging protocols tailored for a variety of spinal emergencies will be presented followed by a review of key imaging findings for the most-encountered emergent spine pathologic conditions. Pathologic conditions will be broadly grouped…

OBJECTIVE: Tracheal pathologies are life-threatening in all age groups and may result in death if urgent action isn't taken. The aim of this study was to present cases of rare and life-threatening tracheal pathologies and discuss the management of these in the light of literature.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made of 8 patients who underwent surgery for emergency tracheal pathologies in our clinics between 2013 and November 2018. The patients were evaluated in terms of age, gender, etiology, symptoms, location of pathology, surgical approach, treatment technique, and length of hospit

Aortic cause of acute chest pain or abdominal pain can be easily overlooked. Unceasing wariness is required for timely diagnosis and prompt treatment. In such cases, cross-sectional imaging can detect the type of aortic involvement, its site, extent, complications, and could help clinicians decide on a management method and prognosticate the condition. This pictorial illustration represents a spectrum of life-threatening conditions involving the aorta in a non-traumatic setting.

Acute neuromuscular disorders represent an important subset of neurologic consultation requests in the inpatient setting. Although most neuromuscular disorders are subacute to chronic, hospital-based neurologists encounter neuromuscular disorders presenting with rapidly progressive or severe weakness affecting limb movement, respiratory, and bulbar function. Recalling fundamentals of neurologic localization assists in prompt recognition and diagnosis. Despite the differing localizations and the causal diagnoses, the initial management principles of acute myopathies, neuropathies, and neuromusc

Patients with hematological malignancies, both treated and untreated, or solid tumors undergoing treatment are at risk of life-threatening complications, which may present in the emergency department (ED). Such emergencies are diverse in etiology and often require prompt treatment. Traditional complications, such as febrile neutropenia, have had recent guideline updates, which incorporate new evidence and a new validated risk stratification tool. In addition, newer approaches to treatment, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, are becoming more widely available and have uniqu…

The transition from fetal to neonatal life is a dramatic and complex process involving extensive physiologic changes, which are most obvious at the time of birth. Individuals who care for newly born infants must monitor the progress of the transition and be prepared to intervene when necessary. In the majority of births, this transition occurs without a requirement for any significant assistance. If newborns require assistance, the majority of the time respiratory support is all that is required. In some instances, however, there are circulatory emergencies that need to be rapidly identified o…

Dental hygienists in Poland work in various settings, including public health care institutions, private dental practices, dental clinics, kindergartens, and schools. They can often face medical emergencies, whose rate is increasing owing to comorbidities and aging of dental patients' populations. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of medical emergencies in dental hygienists' practice in Poland and the hygienists' preparedness and attitudes toward emergencies.A 10-question authors' own questionnaire was filled in by 613 dental hygienist. It referred to their cardiopulmonary resu…

Tumour lysis syndrome (TLS) is a significant complication of haematologic malignancies and their management. The syndrome consists of laboratory abnormalities either alone (laboratory TLS) or with clinical sequelae including renal failure, seizures, and arrhythmias (clinical TLS). Clinical TLS is a predictor for worse overall morbidity and mortality in cancer patients, but can be prevented. Thus, accurate prognostication is critical to appropriate management of patients at risk for TLS, and incorporates both disease factors (tumour type and burden) and patient factors (baseline renal insuffici

Most oncologic emergencies can be classified as metabolic, hematologic, structural, or treatment related. Tumor lysis syndrome is a metabolic emergency that presents as severe electrolyte abnormalities. Stabilization is focused on vigorous rehydration, maintaining urine output, and lowering uric acid levels. Hypercalcemia of malignancy, which is associated with poor outcomes, is treated with aggressive rehydration, intravenous bisphosphonates, and subspecialty consultation. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone should be suspected if a patient with cancer has hyponatremia. This metabo…

The perinatal period is a vulnerable time for the acute onset and recurrence of psychiatric illness. Primary care providers are opportunely positioned to intervene for women who present with mood decompensation, excessive anxiety, or psychosis during the perinatal period. Owing to increased screening efforts in obstetrical clinics and amount of contact during the perinatal period, obstetricians may be able to identify patients who need treatment before their symptoms become severe. In this article, we address imminent and emergent psychiatric symptoms in the perinatal period including manageme

Atraumatic spinal emergencies often present a diagnostic and management dilemma for health care practitioners. Spinal epidural abscess, cauda equina syndrome, and spinal epidural hematoma are conditions that can insidiously present to outpatient medical offices, urgent care centers, and emergency departments. Unless a high level of clinical suspicion is maintained, these clinical entities may be initially misdiagnosed and mismanaged. Permanent neurologic sequela and even death can result if delays in appropriate treatment occur. A focused, critical review of 34 peer-reviewed articles was perfo…

Male pelvic emergencies are uncommon, and symptoms typically include scrotal pain, scrotal enlargement, or a palpable scrotal mass or all of these. Ultrasound is often the first-line modality for evaluation of male pelvic emergencies, which may be stratified into vascular, infectious, or traumatic causes. Entities such as testicular torsion, Fournier gangrene, and testicular dislocation are surgical emergencies and should not be missed or misdiagnosed, as this may cause a significant delay in urgently necessary treatment. Radiologists need to be familiar with the role of imaging as well as the…

Musculoskeletal trauma and infections are commonly encountered in the emergency department. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is rarely employed in true emergencies and most musculoskeletal studies can be deferred to the outpatient setting. This article seeks to address the urgent conditions in which MRI can play a role in diagnosis, management, and treatment. This article outlines MRI's role in the evaluation of posterolateral corner injuries and other soft-tissue pathologies such as rhabdomyolysis, diabetic myonecrosis, septic arthritis, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and compartment synd…

BACKGROUND: In addition to epididymitis and testicular torsion, emergencies of the external genital are rare. Rapid diagnosis and therapy are essential so that immediate therapy can be provided, which is important for survival (Fournier gangrene) of the patient or for the preservation of erectile function (priapism and penile fracture). A detailed patient history and clinical examination are generally sufficient for correct diagnosis.
RESULTS: Under certain circumstances, it might be useful to perform ultrasound, computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging or retrograde urethrograp…

Like the brain, the spinal cord is subject to trauma, infection, ischemia, hemorrhage, and compression. Early diagnosis is the key to preventing significant morbidity in the form of permanent disability. MR imaging is the gold standard for assessing acute injury to the spinal cord, intervertebral discs, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues. In this article we systematically review the MRI findings in spinal cord trauma, ligamentous injury, epidural hematoma, epidural abscess, and metastatic disease.
