Explainable fMRI decoding reveals neurobiological signatures of emotional arousal complementary to traditional analyses.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding how emotional arousal is represented in the brain is fundamental for elucidating affective regulation and its alterations in autism spectrum disorder. Classical neuroimaging approaches, such as the General Linear Model (GLM), have provided important insights into emotional processing. However, the extent to which data-driven decoding and traditional model-based analyses provide complementary information about emotional arousal remains unclear. APPROACH: We introduce an explainable artificial intelligence framework that combines the lightweight functional magnetic reso

Human-AI emotional resonance in generative music: a mini-review of authorship attribution, affective response, and aesthetic evaluation.

Generative artificial intelligence is increasingly involved in music creation, raising important questions about how listeners emotionally respond to music that is generated by, or attributed to, AI. This mini-review synthesizes recent empirical research on listeners' emotional, aesthetic, and physiological responses to AI-generated music. Existing evidence suggests that AI systems can reproduce some acoustic cues associated with basic emotional categories and may elicit measurable affective or attentional responses under specific conditions. However, listeners' evaluations are shaped not only

Processing of stimulus content but not of emotional valence is altered in persons with Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) exhibit hypersociability and may respond atypically to emotional information in social and nonsocial stimuli. It is not yet clear whether these difficulties are specific to emotional content or stimulus type. This study examined the neural processes supporting social and emotional information processing in WS. METHOD: Visual event-related potentials were recorded in 19 adults with WS and 10 typical peers during a picture-viewing task requiring detection of smiling faces among other social and nonsocial images with positive and negative emoti

Systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: cognitive function and social adjustment.

In contrast with other systemic rheumatic diseases in childhood, no systematic studies exist that focus on possible long-term risks for central nervous system involvement in systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (SJRA). We investigated 31 children and adolescents with SJRA, aged 6 to 24 years (mean, 12.5 years; standard deviation, 4.3 years), with mean disease duration of 6.2 years (standard deviation, 3.5 years; range, 0.6-14 years) for their cognitive and fine motor abilities. We also examined 31 matched healthy control subjects. In addition, parents assessed social activities and social an

Artificial intelligence-assisted visual elicitation in anorexia nervosa : Qualitative case studies.

PURPOSE: This study explored the feasibility and therapeutic potential of combining artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted visual elicitation with sensory-attuned guided reflection to support emotional expression and engagement in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: We conducted a two-session, therapist-led intervention with two adults with restrictive AN. In session 1, we guided participants to reflect on emotionally challenging experiences using metaphor and sensory language cues. We translated these narratives into prompts for DALL·E (v3; OpenAI, San Francisco, CA, USA), an AI

Validation and cross-linguistic adaptation of the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment (FDA-2) speech intelligibility tests: Hebrew version.

'Dysarthria' is a group of motor speech disorders resulting from a disturbance in neuromuscular control. Most individuals with dysarthria cope with communicative restrictions due to speech impairments and reduced intelligibility. Thus, language-sensitive measurements of intelligibility are important in dysarthria neurological assessment. The Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment, 2nd edition (FDA-2), is a validated tool for the identification of the nature and patterns of oro-motor movements associated with different types of dysarthria. The current study conducted a careful culture- and linguistic-s

Theory of mind in spina bifida: Relationship with intellectual and executive functioning.

This article investigates emotion recognition ability, a central aspect of Theory of Mind (ToM), in a group of individuals with spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) experiencing executive function deficits, and examine associations between emotion recognition, and intellectual and executive functioning. A total of 38 adult subjects with SBM were included in this study, participating in a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of a cognitive rehabilitation intervention for executive dysfunction. Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) was used as a measure of emotion recognition, an

Heroin delay discounting: Modulation by pharmacological state, drug-use impulsivity, and intelligence.

Delay discounting (DD) refers to how rapidly an individual devalues goods based on delays to receipt. DD usually is considered a trait variable but can be state dependent, yet few studies have assessed commodity valuation at short, naturalistically relevant time intervals that might enable state-dependent analysis. This study aimed to determine whether drug-use impulsivity and intelligence influence heroin DD at short (ecologically relevant) delays during two pharmacological states (heroin satiation and withdrawal). Out-of-treatment, intensive heroin users (n = 170; 53.5% African American; 66.

Contributing factors predicting nightmares in children: Trauma, anxiety, dissociation, and emotion regulation.

OBJECTIVE: There is little research in the current literature regarding contributing factors to nightmares in children. This study aimed to test potentially overlapping predictors of nightmare distress and severity, including anxiety, dissociation, trauma history, vagal tone, and parental processing of emotions. METHOD: Sixty parent-child dyads (children ages 6-11) filled out a variety of child-report and parent-observation inventories on nightmare frequency and distress, dissociation, anxiety, and trauma history of the child. Children were monitored on heart rate variability and vagal tone.

Recognising 'social' and 'non-social' emotions in self and others: a study of autism.

Studies of emotion processing in autism have produced mixed results, with fewer studies observing autism-specific deficits than might be imagined. In the current study, 21 individuals with autism and 21 age- and ability-matched, learning disabled comparison participants were tested for their ability to (a) recognise, in others, expressions of 'social' emotions (e.g., embarrassment) and 'non-social' emotions (e.g., happiness) and; (b) report their own previous experiences of each of these emotions. In line with predictions, amongst both groups of participants, social emotions were more difficul

Amplifications and applications of Pennebaker's analogic to digital model in health promotion, prevention, and psychotherapy.

This article expands on James Pennebaker's original model in expressive writing, going from an Analogically unclear and unspecified experiential mass (A) to a Digital specification in words (D). Amplifications of this model are found in philosophy, psychodynamic theory and in Salience learning theory. Applications of this model involve expressive writing, going from ambiguous experiences (A) to using the Dictionary (D), and responding to Sentences with strong psychological impact (S). The undefined and ill-defined analogical mass is constituted by traumas in Pennebaker's work and hurt feelings

Dysfunctional personality beliefs and emotion recognition in individuals with methamphetamine dependence.

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals with methamphetamine dependence have impaired emotion recognition. However, heterogeneity in results from these studies may indicate that individual factors such as personality beliefs moderate emotion recognition deficits. Thus, we aimed to examine the relationship between dimensional estimates of dysfunctional personality beliefs and facial emotion recognition in 86 Australian treatment seekers with methamphetamine dependence. Dysfunctional beliefs were measured using the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire, and emotion recognition was measur

The functional neuroanatomy of social behaviour: changes in cerebral blood flow when people with autistic disorder process facial expressions.

Although high-functioning individuals with autistic disorder (i.e. autism and Asperger syndrome) are of normal intelligence, they have life-long abnormalities in social communication and emotional behaviour. However, the biological basis of social difficulties in autism is poorly understood. Facial expressions help shape behaviour, and we investigated if high-functioning people with autistic disorder show neurobiological differences from controls when processing emotional facial expressions. We used functional MRI to investigate brain activity in nine adults with autistic disorder (mean age +/

Neuroanatomy of complex social emotion dysregulation in adolescent offenders.

Social emotions require the correct integration of emotional, cognitive, and social processes and are critical for complex social interactions. Adolescent criminal offenders (AOs) show abnormalities in the experience of basic emotions. However, most research has focused solely on basic emotions, neglecting complex social emotions that could be critical for social reintegration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavioral and neural correlates of social emotions (envy and Schadenfreude) in AOs. We explored the experience of complex social emotions, as well as their anatomical co

Diagnosing dyslexia. A note on the need for ecological assessment.

Diagnosis of dyslexia and other learning disabilities is usually made on the basis of poor academic performance; intact intelligence; presence of neurological, perceptual, or linguistic disorders; and exclusion of obvious physical, emotional, or environmental difficulties. Recent evidence suggests that both physicians and educators often fail to consider certain situational and instructional factors, which often leads to incorrect diagnosis of the syndrome. A simple case review and interview procedure is suggested as a means of avoiding the problem of false-positive diagnoses of dyslexia.
