The present study aimed to verify the factors that interfere with the success of endodontic treatment of traumatized primary teeth as well as to determine the success level of the proposed treatment, through survival analysis. The research was conducted through the analysis of dental traumatism records and attached radiological exams of patients assisted by the Assistance Program for the Traumatized Patient at UFSC (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina). The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the apical seal obtained with four root canal sealers: Rocanal 2, Sealapex, AH Plus, and RC Sealer. The two clinical cases reported demonstrate that traumatic occlusion can play a role in the initiation and progression of pulp and periradicular inflammation. The symptom of persistent pain did not subside after the commencement of endodontic treatment. Traumatic occlusion was identified in both cases to be the main cause and hence occlusal adjustment was performed. This resulted in the gradual resolution of the symptoms. The findings suggest that occlusal trauma is often overlooked in the diagnosis and management of endodontic diseases.

Subcutaneous emphysema is well known, but diffusion of gas into the mediastinum is not so common, particularly if it is caused by treatment of a root canal without apparent osseous fenestration or mucoperiostal lesions. We report a case of iatrogenic pneumomediastinum and facial emphysema after endodontic treatment. The diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography, and the patient recovered after treatment with intravenous antibiotics and analgesia.

Necrotic dental root canal infections are polymicrobial infections dominated by anaerobic bacteria. The number of different species in one canal is usually low, approx. 4-7 species.
