Design and simulation of perturbed onion-like quantum-dot-quantum-well (CdSe/ZnS/CdSe/ZnS) and its influence on fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism.

In this study, the authors investigate one of the biological sensory applications (fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)) that has astonishing influence on implementation of the bio-medical assays. For the first time, in this study, the new inorganic modified nanoparticle structure (quantum-dot quantum-well (QDQW) heteronanocrystal) is used as donor particle. By considering the mentioned structure, the authors can easily manipulate the donor emission spectrum and all parameters of FRET, such as overlapping between the donor emission and acceptor absorption. In this procedure, the Först

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer analysis of CCR-V64I and SDF1-3'a polymorphisms: prevalence in southern Spain hiv type 1+ cohort and noninfected population.

The relationship between host genotype and AIDS, as well as the different genotype frequencies observed in different populations, have become important topics in HIV research. Therefore, the development of methods that provide faster and reliable results may contribute to further development and knowledge of those topics. We present the results of genotyping SDF1-3'A and CCR2-V64I in 440 HIV-1-infected people and 100 noninfected controls from southern Spain, using a novel method based on real-time PCR with LightCycler technology and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Frequencies obtained

Biophysical analysis of the dose-dependent overdispersion and the restricted linear energy transfer dependence expressed in dicentric chromosome data from alpha-irradiated human lymphocytes.

Experimental data for the induction of dicentric chromosomes in phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated human T lymphocytes by 241Am alpha-particles obtained by Schmid et al. have been analyzed in the light of biophysical theory. As usual in experiments with alpha-particles, the relative variance of the intercellular distribution of the number of aberrations per cell exceeds unity, and the multiplicity of the aberrations per particle traversal through the cell is understood as the basic effect causing this overdispersion. However, the clearly expressed dose dependence of the relative variance diff

Organic Semiconductor Nanosheets for Sulfite Detecting Based on Activation of Sulfite and a Synergetic Chemiluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer Process in a Mild System of Fe2+-SO32.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) as one kind of air pollution not only causes extreme environmental pollution but also negatively affects human health. Chemiluminescence (CL) methods applied for sulfite analysis with high selectivity based on activating sulfite with oxidants are always implemented in acid media with a high background rise. In this work, we proposed to develop a mild CL system of Fe2+-SO32- to detect sulfite under neutral conditions and provide in situ CL spectral data for deeply studying the CL mechanism of Fe2+-SO32-. Herein, we first synthesized one type of water-soluble supramolecular

The effects of the SUN project on teacher knowledge and self-efficacy regarding biological energy transfer are significant and long-lasting: results of a randomized controlled trial.

Biological energy flow has been notoriously difficult to teach. Our approach to this topic relies on abiotic and biotic examples of the energy released by moving electrons in thermodynamically spontaneous reactions. A series of analogical model-building experiences was supported with common language and representations including manipulatives. These materials were designed to help learners understand why electrons move in a hydrogen explosion and hydrogen fuel cell, so they could ultimately understand the rationale for energy transfer in the mitochondrion and the chloroplast. In vitro screening for synergism of high-linear energy transfer 213Bi-radiotherapy with other therapeutic agents for the treatment of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: External beam radiotherapy and beta-radioimmunotherapy (RIT) are effective treatments for lymphoid malignancies. The development of RIT with alpha-emitters is attractive, owing to the high (LET) nature and short path length of alpha particles allowing for higher tumor cell kill and lower toxicity to healthy tissues. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the response of B-Cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) cells in vitro after treatment with chemotherapy (cisplatin, fludarabine, doxorubicin, or vincristine) or other pharmaceuticals (colchicine, simvastatin, or cycl

Assessment of Charge Transfer Energies of Noncovalently Bounded Ar-TCNE Complexes Using Range-Separated Density Functionals and Double-hybrid Density Functionals.

Charge Transfer (CT) molecular complexes have recently received much attention in a broad variety of fields. The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), which is essential for studying CT complexes, is a well-established tool to study the excited states of relatively large molecular systems. However, when dealing with donor-acceptor molecules with CT characteristics, TDDFT calculations based on standard functionals can severely underestimate the excitation energies. The TDDFT methodology, combined with range-separated DFT and range-separated double-hybrid DFT functionals, had previou

Study on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer between CdTe QDs and butyl-rhodamine B in the presence of CTMAB and its application on the detection of Hg(II).

The thioglycolic acid-functionalized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized in aqueous solution using safe and low-cost inorganic salts as precursors. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system was constructed between CdTe QDs (donor) and butyl-rhodamine B (BRB) (acceptor) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB). CTMAB micelles formed in water reduced the distance between the donor and the acceptor significantly and thus improved the FRET efficiency, which resulted in an obvious fluorescence enhancement of the acceptor. Several factors which impacted the fluoresce

Characteristic genetic alterations associated with the partial deletion of chromosome 11 in mouse thymic lymphomas induced by high-linear energy transfer irradiation with carbon ions.

High-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation is thought to induce highly complex DNA damage compared with photon radiation such as X-rays, suggesting a characteristic mechanism for the development of cancers associated with high-LET radiation exposure. However, few studies have investigated the carcinogenic mechanisms that are dependent on radiation quality or LET. This study analyzed mutations and gene expression in thymic lymphomas (TL) induced by high-LET carbon-ion irradiation to identify characteristic genetic alterations. The results revealed that TL arising after four-fractionated high-L

Mechanisms of fibrinogen trans-activation of the EGFR/Ca2+ signaling axis to regulate mitochondrial transport and energy transfer and inhibit axonal regeneration following cerebral ischemia.

Ischemic stroke results in inhibition of axonal regeneration but the roles of fibrinogen (Fg) in neuronal signaling and energy crises in experimental stroke are under-investigated. We explored the mechanism of Fg modulation of axonal regeneration and neuronal energy crisis after cerebral ischemia using a permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat model and primary cortical neurons under low glucose-low oxygen. Behavioral tests assessed neurological deficits; immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and Western-blot analyzed Fg and protein levels. Fluo-3/AM fluorescence measured fre

Effects of Capacitive and Resistive Energy Transfer Therapy (TECAR) and Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) on Blood Pressure During the Musculoskeletal Treatment: A Preliminary Study.

INTRODUCTION: The systemic effects of capacitive and resistive energy transfer therapy (TECAR) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on hemodynamic parameters remain insufficiently documented. Although these procedures are known for their local impact on microcirculation, there is no solid clinical evidence regarding their influence on blood pressure. This study aims to describe the evolution of systolic and diastolic blood pressure during a standardized therapeutic protocol and to evaluate the safety of these interventions in patients with musculoskeletal disorders, including those with treated

Cholesterol-dependent energy transfer between fluorescent proteins-insights into protein proximity of APP and BACE1 in different membranes in Niemann-Pick type C disease cells.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) -based techniques have recently been applied to study the interactions between β-site APP-cleaving enzyme-GFP (BACE1-GFP) and amyloid precursor protein-mRFP (APP-mRFP) in U373 glioblastoma cells. In this context, the role of APP-BACE1 proximity in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis has been discussed. FRET was found to depend on intracellular cholesterol levels and associated alterations in membrane stiffness. Here, NPC1 null cells (CHO-NPC1-/-), exhibiting increased cholesterol levels and disturbed cholesterol transport similar to that observed in N

A fluorescence aptasensor for high sensitivity detection of Golgi protein 73 based on N, S-GQDs and MoS2@RGO via fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism.

Quantitative detection of Golgi protein 73 (GP73), a promising biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is crucial for early diagnosis. In this study, we developed a fluorescence aptasensor for sensitive and specific detection of GP73 based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between GP73 aptamer-functionalized nitrogen/sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dots (N, S-GQDs-GP73Apt) as the fluorescence donor and molybdenum disulfide@reduced graphene oxide (MoS2@RGO) as the fluorescence acceptor. In the absence of GP73, the fluorescence of N, S-GQDs-GP73Apt was effectively quenched

Tandem Förster resonance energy transfer induced visual ratiometric fluorescence sensing of tetracyclines based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 incorporated with carbon dots and safranine T.

Developing new methods for efficiently detecting tetracycline antibiotics in water has gained much importance. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was used as a host to encapsulate carbon dots (CDs) and safranine T (ST) during its self-assembly process to synthesize CDs/ST@ZIF-8, which was then applied as the dual-emissive probe for detecting tetracycline antibiotics. Benefiting from the confinement effects of ZIF-8 and its fluorescence enhancement effects toward tetracycline (TC), a unique tandem Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) system from CDs to TC and then to ST

Dual-Mode Immunosensor for Electrochemiluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer and Electrochemical Detection of Rabies Virus Glycoprotein Based on Ru(bpy)32+-Loaded Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles.

Rabies is a serious zoonotic disease in almost all warm-blooded animals and causes fatal encephalitis. The detection of rabies virus (RABV) is critical and remains a significant challenge. Herein, an electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) and electrochemical (EC) dual-mode immunosensor was developed for highly sensitive detection of RABV glycoprotein. Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) were employed to load Ru(bpy)32+ and to obtain ECL probes (Ru@DMSNs). Ru@DMSNs were decorated on the electrode surface, followed by the modification of the RABV antibody (Ab1

The mitochondrial-targeted reactive species scavenger JP4-039 prevents sulfite-induced alterations in antioxidant defenses, energy transfer, and cell death signaling in striatum of rats.

Sulfite oxidase (SO) deficiency is a disorder caused either by isolated deficiency of SO or by defects in the synthesis of its molybdenum cofactor. It is characterized biochemically by tissue sulfite accumulation. Patients present with seizures, progressive neurological damage, and basal ganglia abnormalities, the pathogenesis of which is not fully established. Treatment is supportive and largely ineffective. To address the pathophysiology of sulfite toxicity, we examined the effects of intrastriatal administration of sulfite in rats on antioxidant defenses, energy transfer, and mitogen-activa

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Mediated Photoluminescence Quenching in Stoichiometrically Assembled CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dot-Peptide Labeled Black Hole Quencher Conjugates for Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 Sensing.

The steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence quenching of streptavidin modified CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) instigated by biotin-peptide-BHQ-1 (biotin-pep-BHQ-1) molecule was investigated. Here, we have achieved an efficient photoluminescence (PL) quenching of QDs with the conjugation of dark quencher (black hole quencher-BHQ) molecules intermediated with the GPLGVRGK peptide. The luminescence of streptavidin-QDs585 was decreased upon titration with a nano molar concentration of the biotin-GPLGVRGK-BHQ-1 molecule. It has been suggested that the decrease of QDs PL occurred through a För

Chemiluminescent and chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) detection of DNA, metal ions, and aptamer-substrate complexes using hemin/G-quadruplexes and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

Nucleic acid subunits consisting of fragments of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mimicking DNAzyme and aptamer domains against ATP or sequences recognizing Hg(2+) ions self-assemble, in the presence of ATP or Hg(2+), into the active hemin-G-quadruplex DNAzyme structure. The DNAzyme-generated chemiluminescence provides the optical readout for the sensing events. In addition, the DNAzyme-stimulated chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) to CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) is implemented to develop aptamer or DNA sensing platforms. The self-assembly of the ATP-aptamer subunits/hemin-G-qua

Modelling of a double-scattering proton therapy nozzle using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and analysis of linear energy transfer in patients treated for prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: The dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETD) in proton therapy (PT) has in pre-clinical studies been linked to the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of protons. Until recently, the most common PT delivery method in prostate cancer has been double-scattered PT, with LETD only available through dedicated Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. However, as most studies of the relationship between LETD and RBE in double scattered PT have been focused on the head and neck region, existing MC implementations have not been capable of calculating LETD for the longer field ranges used, for e
