Entamoeba histolytica antigen assays on stool are widely used to diagnose amebiasis. We report a case of confirmed amebic colitis with a false-negative antigen detection that became positive after treatment. Our results indicate that these assays may underdiagnose acute amebic infection when used alone and should be used cautiously.

In vitro exposure of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites to the sex steroids 17beta-estradiol, progesterone, and dehydrotestosterone had little effect on parasite viability or proliferation. However, treatment with the adrenal steroid dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) markedly inhibited parasite proliferation, adherence and motility, and at a certain dose it induced trophozoite lysis. Multiple hamster liver passage of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites with intervening recovery into axenic culture caused increased virulence as measured by increase in the size of the lesion produced. The production of cecal lesions with axenically cultivated Entamoeba histolytica in an experimental animal is reported for the first time. Forty-three newborn guinea pigs (one to five days old) were inoculated via laparatomy with 2.5 x 10(5) to 2 x 10(6) strain HM-1-IMSS amebae.
