Research effort on birds' reservoir host potential for Lyme borreliosis: A systematic review and perspectives.

Zoonotic tick-borne diseases threat human and animal health. Understanding the role of hosts in the production of infected ticks in an epidemiological system is essential to be able to design effective measures to reduce the exposure of humans and animals to infectious tick bites. The reservoir host potential, that is, number of infected ticks produced by a host species, depends on three components: tick production, realized reservoir competence and host density. The parameters and factors that determine the reservoir host potential need to be characterized to achieve a robust understanding of

Nested case-control study designs for left-truncated survival data.

The determination of risk factors for disease incidence has been the subject of much epidemiologic research. With this goal a common study design entails the follow-up of an initially disease-free cohort, keeping track of the dates of disease incidence (onset) and ascertaining covariate (putative risk factor) information on the full cohort. However, the collection of certain covariate information on all study subjects may be prohibitively expensive and, therefore, the nested case-control study has commonly been used. The high cost of full covariate information on all subjects also arises when

The epidemiology and characteristics of stalking.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article summarizes major results in the field of epidemiology and characteristics of stalking, as published in literature between 2003 and October 2005. RECENT FINDINGS: Although stalking had been only recently conceptualized, it soon became evident that it represents a significant social and medical problem. Community-based studies on the prevalence of stalking are scarce and predominantly from English-speaking countries. All epidemiological studies, however, revealed that stalking is a widespread phenomenon with lifetime prevalence rates of stalking victimization ran

Enterobius, trichuris, capillaria, and hookworm including ancylostoma caninum.

Infections by the nematodes Enterobius, Trichuris, Capillaria, and hookworm are some of the most widespread gastrointestinal infections worldwide. This article is designed not only to provide an overview of the different parasites in terms of epidemiology, clinical manifestation, and disease but also to highlight particular areas of intensive research activity that are providing new insights into both the biology of the host-parasite relationship and possible new approaches to infection management for the future.

Controversies in the organization and structure of management for rare tumors.

More than half of all gynecological cancers are classified as rare (annual incidence <6 per 100,000), and present significant challenges in diagnosis, management, and research. Rare cancers collectively comprise more than 20% of new cancer diagnoses and exceed the burden of individual common cancers. Their rarity complicates evidence-based guideline development, clinical trial design, and drug access, and is exacerbated by variations in epidemiology, histology, and biological behavior. Key controversies include the need for centralized pathological reviews and harmonized diagnostic criteria. R

Disability discrimination, disability permanence, and mental health among U.S. adults.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Disability is often framed as an inherently negative experience that harms the mental health and well-being of disabled individuals. This perspective, however, ignores the impact of disability discrimination. The relationship between disability discrimination and mental health has been documented in several cultural contexts, but not yet in a large-scale, nationally representative sample in the United States. Additionally, limited research has explored moderators of the relationship between disability discrimination and mental health. The purpose of the present study was to

Coping and psychological well-being: Investigating the relations between specific coping strategies, anxiety, and depression among adolescents in a South African township.

Background: Coping strategies are important in the development and prevention of mental health problems in adolescents. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the links between specific coping strategies and mental health in at-risk adolescents from socioeconomically vulnerable communities in South Africa. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether specific coping strategies predicted anxiety and/or depression among South African adolescents living in an impoverished township.Method: Data were collected from 415 adolescents from two secondary schools in Etwatwa, Gauteng, us

Cohort profile: the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) survey.

The Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey is a community-based, random sample, epidemiologic cohort of n = 5502 Boston (MA) residents. The baseline BACH Survey (2002-05) was designed to explore the mechanisms conferring increased health risks on minority populations with a particular focus on urologic signs/symptoms and type 2 diabetes. To this end, the cohort was designed to include adequate numbers of US racial/ethnic minorities (Black, Hispanic, White), both men and women, across a broad age of distribution. Follow-up surveys were conducted ∼5 (BACH II, 2008) and 7 (BACH III, 2010) yea

Microbiologic methods utilized in the MAL-ED cohort study.

A central hypothesis of The Etiology, Risk Factors and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health and Development (MAL-ED) study is that enteropathogens contribute to growth faltering. To examine this question, the MAL-ED network of investigators set out to achieve 3 goals: (1) develop harmonized protocols to test for a diverse range of enteropathogens, (2) provide quality-assured and comparable results from 8 global sites, and (3) achieve maximum laboratory throughput and minimum cost. This paper describes the rationale for the microbiologic assa

Estimating the burden of mucormycosis infections in France (2005-2007) through a capture-recapture method on laboratory and administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycoses are rare but severe fungal infections whose incidence is increasing, particularly in immunosuppressed and diabetic patients. Following a retrospective study on the characteristics and outcomes of cases who were identified through two sources of information, we carried out a capture-recapture method to estimate the actual burden of the disease in France, 2005-2007. METHODS: An administrative dataset from the national hospital discharge system and a laboratory dataset from the National Reference Centre for Mycoses and Antifungals were combined to identify patients from

Long-term outcome of initially homogenously treated and relapsed childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in Austria--a population-based report of the Austrian Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) Study Group.

Relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common cause for a fatal outcome in paediatric oncology. Although initial ALL cure rates have improved up to 80%, the prognosis of recurrent ALL remains dismal with event-free-survival (EFS) rates about 35%. In order to analyse a population-based cohort with uniform treatment of initial disease, we examined the outcome of children suffering from relapsed ALL in Austria for the past 20 years and the validity of the currently used prognostic factors (e.g. time to and site of relapse, immunophenotype). Furthermore, we compared survival rate

Spinal motion palpation: a comparison of studies that assessed intersegmental end feel vs excursion.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal motion palpation (MP) is a procedure used to detect intersegmental hypomobility/hypermobility. Different means of assessing intersegmental mobility are described, assessing either excursion of the segments (quantity of movement) or end feel (quality of motion when stressed against the paraphysiological space). The objective of this review was to classify and compare studies based on method of MP used, considering that some studies may have used both methods. METHODS: Four databases were searched: MEDLINE-PubMed, Manual Alternative and Natural Therapy System, Index to Chiropr

Forced oscillometry is applicable to epidemiological settings to detect asthmatic children.

Forced oscillometry (FOT) has been reported as a simple method to detect respiratory resistance (Rrs) changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate FOT capacity to detect children with clinical characteristics of asthma in a school setting. One thousand thirty children, 6-7 years old, were investigated by questionnaire. Children with wheezing symptoms in the last 12 months but without previous diagnosis of asthma were selected and underwent evaluations. FOT measurements were performed pre- and post-salbutamol administration, with a level of significant reduction of Rrs of >29%. Patients were

Understanding heterogeneity in paediatric long COVID research: an overview of reviews and recommendations for future pandemics.

BACKGROUND: Studies of Long COVID or Post-COVID-19 condition in children and young people have varied considerably in their reported prevalences. We aimed to examine the methodological heterogeneity underlying this variability and explore whether methodological characteristics were correlated with reported Long COVID outcome prevalence, in order to inform recommendations to improve reporting in future pandemic-related epidemiological research. METHODS: We conducted an overview of reviews with a narrative synthesis, identifying systematic reviews and meta-analyses and extracting their included

Psychotic Experiences in the General Population: A Cross-National Analysis Based on 31,261 Respondents From 18 Countries.

IMPORTANCE: Community-based surveys find that many otherwise healthy individuals report histories of hallucinations and delusions. To date, most studies have focused on the overall lifetime prevalence of any of these psychotic experiences (PEs), which might mask important features related to the types and frequencies of PEs. OBJECTIVE: To explore detailed epidemiologic information about PEs in a large multinational sample. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We obtained data from the World Health Organization World Mental Health Surveys, a coordinated set of community epidemiologic surveys of

Measuring scientific coherence between global neglected tropical disease research and population health indicators: a 25-year meta-research study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite major investments in neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) research over the past two decades, it remains unclear whether global scientific production aligns with population-level health indicators. To address this gap, we designed and implemented a comprehensive meta-research analysis pipeline to quantify the scientific coherence between global NTDs research activity and epidemiological indicators across World Health Organization (WHO) regions from 2000-2024. METHODS: Using this pipeline, we linked 1,07,251 NTDrelated publications to 23 disease-specific indicators from WHO

The Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry (SMSR): study protocol of a participatory, nationwide registry to promote epidemiological and patient-centered MS research.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most frequently observed neurological conditions in Switzerland, but data sources for country-wide epidemiological trend monitoring are lacking. Moreover, while clinical and laboratory MS research are generally well established, there is a gap in patient-centered MS research to inform care management, or treatment decisions and policy making not only in Switzerland but worldwide. METHODS: In light of these research gaps, the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Society initiated and funded the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry (SMSR) an open-ended, longit

In-hospital observation after antibiotic switch in pneumonia: a national evaluation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical benefit of in-hospital observation after the switch from intravenous (IV) to oral antibiotics in a large Medicare population. Retrospective studies of relatively small size indicate that the practice of in-hospital observation after the switch from IV to oral antibiotics for patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is unnecessary. METHODS: We performed a retrospective examination of the US Medicare National Pneumonia Project database. Eligible patients were discharged with an ICD-9-CM diagnosis consistent with community-acquired pneumonia
