BACKGROUND: Modular neck adapters for hip arthroplasty stems allow the surgeon to modify CCD angle, offset and femoral anteversion intraoperatively. Fretting or crevice corrosion may lead to failure of such a modular device due to high loads or surface contamination inside the modular coupling. A 53year old lady was noted to have persistent bradycardia in the recovery unit shortly after a dual chamber permanent pacemaker (PPM) was implanted. The patient was asymptomatic. The pacemaker was implanted for symptomatic intermittent complete heart block. She had surgical closure of an atrial septal defect three decades earlier and a previous tricuspid valve replacement with concomitant biatrial cryomaze procedure for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

A tubular poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) ureteral stent composed of nanofibers with micropores was fabricated by double-needle electrospinning. We report a case of intermittent dysfunction in a 10-years-old boy, implanted with MedEL(®) cochlear implant. Few weeks after the surgery the boy described short and intermittent episodes of implant dysfunction with rapid return to a normal function. No evidence for any electric or neural dysfunction was found. After few weeks, a clinical link was discovered to episodes of sneeze or nose blowing. Clinical and surgical implications are discussed.

Given the variability of blood pressure, it is often difficult to make a diagnosis of hypertension or to evaluate the effect of treatment on the basis of single blood pressure readings in the office. To obtain multiple measurements one can either turn to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring or have the patient take his or her own pressure. Both approaches require the availability of reliable, validated devices.
