A 14 year-old patient developed severe anemia and splenomegaly 2 days after the onset of a febrile upper airway infection. The hemoglobin concentration had dropped to 1.1 g/dl. Death occurred as consequence of the acute anemia and peripheral circulatory failure. The crisis was caused by an acute splenic sequestration. Hemoglobin SC disease could be identified as the underlying disorder. Hemoglobin SC disease usually has a milder course than sickle cell disease. The present study investigated the hemorheological and endothelial alterations in sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers in response to a submaximal exercise. A glycoprotein was solubilized from sheep erythrocyte membranes with hot aqueous ethanol. The glycoprotein was purified by phosphocellulose chromatography, ethanol precipitation, lipid solvent extraction, and DEAE chromatography. This study investigates the effects of a novel marine byproduct oil extracted from the cephalopod Nototodarus sloani (Arrow squid) on human platelets and red blood cells (RBCs). The oil was produced using enzyme-assisted extraction under varying pH conditions without further refining. The level of oxidation of the different oils was determined. By using the Coulter Counter S-Plus IV erroneous measurements of leukocytes, platelets and red cells were experienced in blood from two patients with cryoglobulinaemia. Leukocyte levels were estimated too high owing to contamination of the leukocyte counting chamber by unlysed erythrocytes. One of the patients had leukopenia, but the Coulter Counter reported white blood cell counts within normal limits. Rewarming of the sample to 37 degrees C eliminated the problem.

The agglutination of avian red cells, particularly pigeon and budgerigar cells, by sera from patients who had been exposed to birds and had respiratory symptoms, as well as from healthy bird fanciers, has been used to detect the presence of avian specific antibody. Agglutination tests performed by standard techniques using bird erythrocytes can be read within 45 minutes.
