Limonene Modulates Event-Related Potentials in a 2-Back Working Memory Task.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory inputs can influence visual cognition. However, it remains unclear whether such effects are driven by the chemical properties of odorants or by mood-related associations, especially under conditions of high cognitive demand. This study examined whether limonene, a key citrus odorous compound, modulates cognitive processing during a visual 2-back task under different levels of perceptual load. METHODS: We developed a 2-back working memory task using color lightness discrimination. The task included both low-load (orange) and high-load (gray) conditions. Participants wor

Is P3 amplitude associated with greater gaze distraction effect in schizotypy?

A recently proposed "Hyperfocusing hypothesis" suggests that schizotypy is associated with a more narrow but more intense way of allocating attention. The current study aims to test a vital prediction of this hypothesis in a social context, that schizotypy may be related to greater difficulty overcoming the distracting effects of gaze. This could cause a longer time to respond to targets that are invalidly cued by gaze. The current study tested this prediction in a modified Posner cueing paradigm by using P3 as an indicator for attentional resources. Seventy-four young healthy individuals with

Inhibitory P300 subprocesses and neural compensation in genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease: The case for temporal-spatial principal component analysis.

The P300 event-related potential (ERP) is widely investigated in cognitive neuroscience, including related to aging, with smaller amplitudes and delayed latency consistently reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Given that AD-related neurological changes begin years before symptom onset, ERPs in asymptomatic elders with AD risk may characterize early changes. ERPs are seldom studied in this population. Yet, healthy carriers of apolipoprotein-E (APOE) ε4 have evidenced delayed P300 latencies, while P300 amplitude differences are seldom found. However, despite its frequent study, the specific co

Early cognitive processes in OCD: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by persistent, intrusive, and distressing obsessions and/or compulsions and is associated with marked impairments in quality of life. The goal of the present study was to examine initial stages of information processing, specifically, perceptual and attention orientation phases that precede response preparation in OCD. METHODS: The P3 event-related potential (ERP) component was used as a measure of early cognitive processes of visual stimulus perception. ERPs were recorded while 38 participants diagnosed with OCD and 38 healthy

Electrical neuroimaging reveals content-specific effects of threat in primary visual cortex and fronto-parietal attentional networks.

Whereas effects of anticipatory anxiety on attention are usually assumed to remain largely undifferentiated, discrepant findings in the literature suggest that, depending on its content and causes, different modulatory effects on attention control and early sensory processing may arise. Using electrical neuroimaging and psychophysiology in a cross-over design, we tested the hypothesis that different types of anticipatory anxiety (bodily vs. psychological), transiently induced in healthy participants, had dissociable effects on brain systems regulating attention control. Attention control corre

Primary headache pathophysiology in children: the contribution of clinical neurophysiology.

Although primary headaches are very prevalent also in pediatric age, most neurophysiologic studies in these diseases concerned only the adulthood. The neurophysiologic investigation of the pathophysiological mechanisms subtending migraine and tension-type headache in children and adolescents could be particularly interesting, since during the developmental age the migrainous phenotype is scarcely influenced by many environmental factors that can typically act on adult headache patients. The neurophysiologic abnormality most frequently found in adult migraineurs, that is the reduced habituation

Opening the cardiac chambers does not make any difference in p300 measurement.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive brain dysfunction after open heart surgery is a serious complication caused by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The presence of gaseous and/or particulate emboli in the CPB circuit and cerebral hypoperfusion may be the causes of neurologic problems after cardiac operations. METHODS: In this prospective study we examined 42 consecutive cardiac surgery patients (24 mitral valve replacement [MVR] and 18 coronary artery bypass grafting [CABG] patients). In addition to determination of clinical measurements, cognitive brain function was measured objectively by P300 auditory-evoke

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Improves Cognitive Control in Patients With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Randomized Behavioral and Neurophysiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality that may affect over 5% of children and approximately 2.8% of adults worldwide. Pharmacological and behavioral therapies for ADHD exist, but critical symptoms such as dysexecutive deficits remain unaffected. In a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind, crossover mechanistic study, we assessed the cognitive and physiological effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in 40 adult patients with ADHD in order to identify diagnostic (cros

[Clinical and psychophysiological study of patients with panic attacks with or without agoraphobic disorders].

Seventy-seven patients with panic attacks (PA) with or without agoraphobic disorders and 28 healthy controls have been studied using clinico-neurological and psychological methods as well as EEG and auditory event-related evoked potentials (EP) recording. PA patients with agoraphobic disorders featured a significant decrease of density of a-rhythm power and an increase of b-rhythm power in the right hemisphere that reflected a substantial activation of the ascending mesencephalic reticular formation. At the same time, a significant increase of q-rhythm power in temporal areas of the right hemi

Reversible Akinetic Mutism after Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage in the Territory of the Anterior Cerebral Artery without Permanent Ischaemic Damage to Anterior Cingulate Gyri.

We report on two cases of transient akinetic mutism after massive subarachnoid haemorrhage due to the rupture of an intracranial aneurysm of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA). In the two cases, vasospasm could not be demonstrated by imaging studies throughout the clinical course. Both patients shared common radiological features: a hydrocephalus due to haemorrhagic contamination of the ventricular system and a mass effect of a subpial hematoma on the borders of the corpus callosum. Patients were also investigated using auditory event-related evoked potentials at acute stage. In contrast to pr

Electrophysiological correlates of near outcome and outcome sequence processing in problem gamblers and controls.

The magnification of skill component in gambling as well as the gambler's and hot hand fallacies are gambling-related cognitive distortions. The magnification of skill component refers to the belief that one's ability can be used to win in gambling and that there is a reliable way to do so. The gambler's fallacy refers to the belief that a given outcome is unlikely to follow a preceding run of the same outcome (e.g. a coin coming up heads following a run of heads), while the hot hand fallacy refers to the belief that a streak of wins is going to continue. The biopsychological basis of these co

Using brain potentials to understand prism adaptation: the error-related negativity and the P300.

Prism adaptation (PA) is both a perceptual-motor learning task as well as a promising rehabilitation tool for visuo-spatial neglect (VSN)-a spatial attention disorder often experienced after stroke resulting in slowed and/or inaccurate motor responses to contralesional targets. During PA, individuals are exposed to prism-induced shifts of the visual-field while performing a visuo-guided reaching task. After adaptation, with goggles removed, visuomotor responding is shifted to the opposite direction of that initially induced by the prisms. This visuomotor aftereffect has been used to study visu

The effect of chronotype in risky decision making: An ERP study.

Chronotype, the individual predisposition toward morningness or eveningness, is associated with behavioral and emotion regulation traits such as impulsivity, reward sensitivity, and self-control. However, the extent to which it modulates risky decision-making and neural feedback processing remains unclear. This study examined behavioral (percentage of risky choices and reaction time (RT)) and electrophysiological (feedback-related negativity (FRN) and P300 components) differences in risky choices and feedback evaluation individual differences in chronotypes. Chronotype was determined using the

Childhood abuse history and attention bias in adults.

Attention biases toward unpleasant information are evident among children and adults with a history of abuse and have been identified as a potential pathway through which abused children develop psychopathology. Identifying whether a history of childhood abuse affects the time course of attention biases in adults is critical, as this may provide intervention targets. The present study examined the time course of attention bias during an emotion-word Stroop task using event-related potentials (ERPs) in a sample of adults with a range of child abuse histories using a categorical approach (compar

Event-related potentials and visual avoidance in blood phobics: is there any attentional bias?

The possible presence of processing biases for threat-relevant information in blood-injection-injury phobia has been largely neglected in the literature. This issue was addressed by recording the late components (P300 and slow waves) of event-related potentials (ERPs) in the context of affective picture perception, as indicators of processing resources allocation. Blood phobics and healthy controls were shown threat-relevant, emotional threat-irrelevant, and neutral pictures. Free viewing time (VT) was measured as an index of voluntary visual avoidance, along with self-reports of pleasantness

N1 and P300 abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia, epilepsy, and epilepsy with schizophrenialike features.

BACKGROUND: The scalp-recorded N1 and P300 components of the event-related brain potential (ERP) are commonly reduced in patients with schizophrenia but not in patients with epilepsy. Epilepsy patients with interictal chronic schizophrenialike features (EPI-SZ) provide a comparison group for determining whether the ERP amplitude abnormalities seen in schizophrenic patients are associated with shared clinical features of EPI-SZ and schizophrenic patients or overlapping pathophysiologies, or are specific to a distinct schizophrenia etiology. METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia (n = 24) were co

Event-related potentials of self-face recognition in children with pervasive developmental disorders.

Patients with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) often have difficulty reading facial expressions and deciphering their implied meaning. We focused on semantic encoding related to face cognition to investigate event-related potentials (ERPs) to the subject's own face and familiar faces in children with and without PDD. Eight children with PDD (seven boys and one girl; aged 10.8+/-2.9 years; one left-handed) and nine age-matched typically developing children (four boys and five girls; aged 11.3+/-2.3 years; one left-handed) participated in this study. The stimuli consisted of three face im
