Psychological correlates of acute mountain sickness: a prospective study.

Extreme high-altitude environments pose significant challenges to both physiological adaptation and mental health. This study aimed to characterize the dynamic relationship between Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and psychological health, identifying symptom-level drivers of psychological distress in mountaineers. Fifteen mountaineers participating in three expeditions were assessed one week before ascent, upon arrival at high altitude, immediately post-climb, and one week after. The expeditions covered a maximum altitude range of 5276 m to 6621 m (Erfeng of Siguniang Mountain: 5276 m, 4 days; M

Did hypervitaminosis A have a role in Mawson's ill-fated Antarctic exploration?

Douglas Mawson is a national hero of Australia, having led the Australasian Antarctic expedition of 1911, and survived. His three-man sledging team was beset by a series of catastrophes. First, expert skier Belgrave Ninnis died after he fell into a deep crevasse taking with him half the dogs and a sledge of essential food and supplies. The remaining two explorers immediately turned back to base which was 315 miles away. With their rations diminished they resorted to eating their remaining six dogs over 23 days. Xavier Mertz became progressively ill with diarrhea, delirium, vocal outbursts in r

Analog habitat health and safety protocol: replicable standard system for analyzing data related to human factors in simulations.

As space exploration emerges as the next frontier for humanity, challenges related to health and safety in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments become increasingly relevant. This study examines the development of integrated monitoring protocols to establish a replicable standard for collecting and analyzing human factors indicators in both analogous and real space missions, adapting existing approaches from polar environments. A one-month analog mission was conducted with a six-member crew, during which protocols were designed for pre-, during-, and post-mission phases. The metho

High altitude medicine and physiology in the former Soviet Union.

The countries of the former Soviet Union have a long history of studies in high-altitude medicine and physiology, but much of the information is difficult to obtain in the West because of the inaccessibility of the journals and the lack of familiarity with the language. The purpose of present review is to improve this situation. In the 1880's, Ivan Sechenov (1829-1905), one of the founders of the Russian school of physiology, introduced the notion of the "inner altitude," that is, how the alveolar Po2 changes with barometric pressure. Later in the 19th century, Russian army physicians made ext

[Acute high altitude sickness--medical experiences from Mount Everest during the spring season 1996].

In April-May 1996 a Norwegian expedition climbed Mount Everest from the Tibetan side, Eight out of the ten members reached the summit. The expedition did not experience any serious incidents but took part in the rescue and treatment of climbers from other expeditions. Eleven cases are reported. Four of these were fatal. Cerebral oedema and frostbite were the most common problems in addition to hypothermia and exhaustion. The author also discusses acute mountain sickness, including clinical features, treatment and prophylaxis.

Potassium Chlorate at High Altitude: Lost to History.

The use of potassium chlorate and other chlorates from the nineteenth century until the present is reviewed with an emphasis on use at high altitude. Chlorates that undergo high-temperature thermal decomposition are a source of supplemental oxygen for inhalation. The oral uses of potassium chlorate on mountaineering expeditions have ranged from simple lozenges for pharyngitis to the erroneous idea that oral ingestion could provide supplemental oxygen and prevent or treat mountain sickness. Furthermore, today's aircraft and spacecraft still employ chlorates and perchlorates to produce emergency

Exploring the Idea of Human Reproduction in Space: A Potential Area for Future Research.

As space travel evolves from brief missions to longer expeditions, and with the rise of space tourism, there is increasing interest in understanding how space travel affects human reproductive physiology and the feasibility of procreation in space. Space travel presents various potential hazards to reproductive health such as exposure to ionizing radiation, exposure to changes in gravity, psychological stress, and disruptions to the endocrine and urogenital systems, as well as the circadian rhythm. This article explores how cosmic radiation and microgravity impact both female and male gametoge

An integrative study of Callicarpa gracilis Fewkes, 1881 and Aglaophenia trifida L. Agassiz, 1862, with notes on some hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from French Guiana.

Among the thecate hydroids brought back by the Proteus-Guyane 2017 expedition of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle of Paris, France, from French Guiana, two interesting species are reported upon. The plumulariid Callicarpa gracilis Fewkes, 1881, known so far from the type specimen only, is comprehensively redescribed 140 years after its original description. It adopts two different morphotypes with respect to both its tropho- and gonosome, forming either simple or ramified colonies, with either structurally-complex or rudimentary phylactocarps, respectively. Taxonomic notes on the gener

Paramathes evdomo, a new species from Sichuan, southwestern China (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Noctuinae).

Paramathes Boursin, 1954 is a Noctuinae genus closely related to Xestia Hübner and distributed in high mountain regions of West and Central China. Paramathes and the Xestia-complex (the Palaearctic and Oriental species have never been revised) show a lot of synapomorhies, which indicate the close relationship, particularly in the male genitalia: lanceolate or spatulate uncus, the presence of apical process and pseudopollex on the valvae, carinal thorn or bulb. However, these characters are not present all in most of the Xestia; e. g. most of them have long, narrow uncus, no apical process on t

Frostbite injury: a paragliding accident at 5500 meters.

Frostbite as a result of mountaineering or arctic expeditions is a well-known problem. In this article a rare case of frostbite injury following a paragliding accident at high altitude is described. A cumulonimbus cloud formation drifted the patient up with a high velocity to approximately 5500 m. He acquired frostbite injuries of the neck, wrists, hands and left leg, affecting 5% of the total body surface area. The frostbite was initially treated by rewarming, with later debridement and local application of silver sulfadiazine and povidone-iodine dressings. Within three months all the injurie

[C.P. Thunberg and his voyage to Japan (5). Mercury water therapy fpr syphilis (continued)].

The formula for the mercury water therapy introduced into Japan by Thunberg for the treatment of syphilis was received in 1742 by van Swieten, a Dutch medical doctor who studied under Boerhaave and who later became a professor at Vienna Univ., from Sanchez, a Russian medical doctor. After trying it personally for the treatment of the sexual disease for 12 years, van Swieten tested it in 128 patients at St. Marx's Hospital in 1754. It spread throughout Europe when it was published by van Swieten after confirming its safety in these patients. The formula was listed in Pharmacopoeia of different

Impedance cardiography as a tool for haemodynamic monitoring at high altitude: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Altitude illness is a relevant threat to the life and health of participants in mountaineering expeditions. AIM: To determine if impedance cardiography (ICG) can be used in noninvasive monitoring of haemodynamic disturbances at high altitude. METHODS: The study was performed in a group of 13 participants of two mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas. The ICG examination was performed before the expedition and again at high altitude (4,300-5,700 m) with concurrent estimates of clinical symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS) and those suggesting an increased risk of high al

The traditional knowledge on stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponina) used by the Enawene-Nawe tribe in western Brazil.

BACKGROUND: This paper presents the Enawene-Nawe Society's traditional knowledge about stingless bees. The Enawene-Nawe are an Aruak speaking people, indigenous to the Meridian Amazon. Specifically, they live in the Jurema River hydrological basin, located in the northwestern region of the Mato Grosso state. METHODS: The stingless bees were sampled from two ecologically similar regions in the interior of Enawene-Nawe Land. The first sampling took place around the village, i.e., adjacent to houses, by the edge of the Iquê River, next to food leftovers, around human excrement, and simply when t

Mahamari Plague: Rats, Colonial Medicine and Indigenous Knowledge in Kumaon and Garhwal, India.

Colonial approaches to animal and zoonotic diseases are often scrutinized in terms of their recognition or dismissal of indigenous knowledge. In this article I examine British colonial approaches to "Mahamari plague" in mid-nineteenth century Kumaon and Garhwal, in the Indian Himalayas. Discussing two key colonial medical expeditions in the region, I argue that the eventual recognition of the validity of Kumaoni and Garhwali knowledge of Mahamari and its relation to rats intensified intrusive colonial intervention on indigenous lifeways. I examine this neglected impact of the colonial recognit

[Scurvy, an old disease still in the news: two case reports].

Scurvy is the clinical manifestation of a deficiency in vitamin C, which is present in fresh fruits and vegetables. It is historically linked to the era of great maritime expeditions. Manifestations are misleading in children, in contrast with adults: bone disease and hemorrhagic syndrome are the earliest and most frequent manifestations due to a collagen biosynthesis defect. Scurvy is an old, potentially fatal disease but is easily curable with ascorbic acid. It can be prevented with vitamin C treatment in pediatric populations with unusual eating habits. We describe two cases of pediatric sc
