Ocular manifestations of vaccine-preventable diseases: A comprehensive review.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) remain a significant contributor to global ocular morbidity, yet their ophthalmic manifestations are often underrecognized. This review synthesizes current evidence on viral and bacterial VPDs with ocular involvement, highlighting a spectrum of presentations-from conjunctivitis to keratitis, uveitis, and optic neuritis. Such infections may affect a range of ocular tissues through mechanisms including direct viral invasion, immune-mediated inflammation, and secondary complications. While the frequency and severity of ocular involvement vary among pathogens, t

Annual review of systemic disease--1997--II.

The intention of this series of semiannual reviews of systemic diseases is not to develop an annual encyclopedic compendium of every article published in the prior calendar year on each systemic illness but rather to select for each issue a few systemic diseases of import to the neuro-ophthalmologist, and to summarize the literature that has developed over the past few years. For each systemic disease selected, the review will cover new developments in its epidemiology; new reports of its neuro-ophthalmic, ocular, and neurologic manifestations; unique clinical presentations; radiologic and lab

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and its ocular complications.

Human immunodeficiency virus infection is the first major pandemic of the 20th century. At present, almost 10 million people are known to be infected with this virus, and it is estimated that by the year 2000, approximately 40 million people will be infected. Transmission of this deadly infection is predominantly by sexual contact. Individuals infected with this virus pass through several predictable stages with progressive decrease in circulating CD4+ T cells. During the advanced stage, these patients develop various opportunistic infections or malignancies, or both. It is this advanced stage

The associations of herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus infection with dementia: a nationwide retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In this study, the risk of dementia in patients with a history of herpes simplex virus (HSV) or varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection was evaluated. METHODS: This nationwide cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service collected between 2006 and 2017. A total of 752,205 subjects ≥ 45 years of age not diagnosed with dementia until 2006 were included. A multivariate Cox regression model, adjusted for age, sex, and other comorbidities, was used to assess the hazard ratio (HR) for dementia based on VZV or HSV infection. The interaction effects of both vira

[Physiopathologic mechanisms behind eye symptoms in primary tumors of the pineal body].

Primary tumors of the pineal body can produce dyscoordinative movements of the eye, pupillary dilatation, paralysis of adduction during convergence and nystagmus. Obstruction of the aqueduct can cause hydrocephalus, increased intracranial pressure and papilledema. Diabetes insipidus may be a presenting symptom. Pinealocytes and the photoreceptors of the eye contain several autoantigens. In man, the best known is the S-antigen. This antigen can be detected in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with primary tumors of the pineal body. The S-antigen, and possibly other related autoantigens, can e

Periorbital infections and conjunctivitis due to Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) positive Staphylococcus aureus in children.

BACKGROUND: Colonisation with Panton-Valentine Leukocidin expressing strains of Staphylococcus aureus (PVL + SA) is characterised by recurrent skin and soft tissue infections. While periorbital and orbital infections are common in children and frequently caused by S. aureus the role of PVL + SA in recurrent eye infections has not been studied. This study aimed to detect and report frequency and recurrence of periorbital or orbital infections as additional symptoms of PVL + SA colonisation in children. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients who were treated fo…

Knowledge of ocular infections among the dental practitioners across India: a cross sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Ocular issues such as impaired vision, ophthalmia, orbital cellulitis, and blindness are not common with dental infections. However, there is absence of set guidelines in prevention and management of ocular issues arising from dental infections. Hence the knowledge and vantage point of the dentists with respect to ocular complications arising from dental infections was evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study reviews the knowledge of dentists with association of eye infection due to dental contamination. METHOD: A cross sectional survey using standardized questionnaires were sent suing s

Molecular Characterization of Bacterial Agents Causing External Ocular Infections Isolates of Patients in a Third Level Hospital.

Empirical use of antibiotics in the treatment of eye infections leads to bacterial pathogens becoming resistant to antibiotics; consequently, treatment failure and eye health complications occur. The aim of this study was to describe the phenotype and genotype of the resistance and adherence of bacterial agents causing eye infections in patients at Hospital Juárez de México. An observational, prospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was carried out in patients with signs and symptoms of ocular infection. Bacterial agents were isolated and identified by classical microbiology and mas…

Microbial Keratitis and Endophthalmitis After the Boston Type 1 Keratoprosthesis.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence, ocular surface disease associations, microbiological profile, and clinical course of postoperative infections after implantation of the Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis (KPro-1). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of all cases of the KPro-1 performed at a tertiary eye care center between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2014. RESULTS: Seventy-five KPro-1 procedures were included in the analysis. Postoperative infections occurred in 13 eyes (17.3%) with an incidence of 0.064 cases per eye-year. The Kaplan-Meier probability of an infection-f

Infectious Sclerouveitis in an Immunocompetent Patient: A Probable Case of Simultaneous Ocular Tuberculosis and Toxoplasmosis.

Simultaneous infections of tuberculosis and toxoplasmosis are uncommon in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of a 30-year-old male who presented with right eye redness and blurring of vision for one month. The visual acuities were hand movement and Snellen 20/30 in the right and left eyes, respectively. Panuveitis and scleritis were found in the right eye, together with dense vitritis and a large choroidal lesion that extended from the inferonasal to the superotemporal quadrants. B-scan ultrasonography of the right eye showed a choroidal detachment with scleral thickening and subtenon

Topical semifluorinated alkane-based azithromycin suspension for the management of ocular infections.

The management of ocular infections is challenging due to poor drug bioavailability and vehicle related adverse effects associated with current antibiotic eye drops. Semifluorinated alkanes (SFAs) are reportedly well-tolerated on the ocular surface and can enhance ocular drug bioavailability. Therefore, an SFA-based azithromycin suspension (SFA-AZM) was prepared and its antibacterial efficacy was compared to that of marketed azithromycin eye drops by monitoring the growth of bioluminescent Staphylococcus aureus in ex vivo ocular tissues. Corneal and conjunctival distribution of hydrophobic flu

Orbital aspergillus infection diagnosed by FNAC.

Fungal infections of the orbit represent a small minority of orbital infections. However, due to the virulent nature of some of the fungal species, they can have a devastating effect on ocular functions. Most of these fungi are saprophytes, which cause opportunistic infections. Aspergillus is one such fungus that can cause infection at various sites in an immunosuppressed individual. Sinonasal aspergillus infection with orbital extension and orbital aspergillus infection progress relentlessly. They can have a precipitous clinical course resulting in total loss of vision. Fine needle aspiration

A treated case of rhinocerebral zygomycosis with aspergillosis: a case report from India.

Zygomycosis and aspergillosis are two serious fungal infections that are commonly seen in immunocompromised patients. Since both of these infections involve fungi that invade vessels of the arterial system, an early and rapid diagnosis by direct examination of KOH mounts of the relevant clinical sample can clinch the diagnosis. Here, we present a case of a 60-year-old diabetic patient who presented with swelling and pain over the nose and left eye for 7 days with loss of vision in the left eye. After investigation, the patient was diagnosed as having rhinocerebral mucormycosis and aspergillosi

Antibody-based immunotherapy of aciclovir resistant ocular herpes simplex virus infections.

The increasing incidence of aciclovir- (ACV) resistant strains in patients with ocular herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections is a major health problem in industrialized countries. In the present study, the humanized monoclonal antibody (mAb) hu2c targeting the HSV-1/2 glycoprotein B was examined for its efficacy towards ACV-resistant infections of the eye in the mouse model of acute retinal necrosis (ARN). BALB/c mice were infected by microinjection of an ACV-resistant clinical isolate into the anterior eye chamber to induce ARN and systemically treated with mAb hu2c at 24h prior (pre-exposure

Conjunctivitis due to Neisseria sicca: a case report.

We report the first case, in Medline-based literature, of conjunctivitis caused by gram negative diplococcus, Neisseria sicca. Although it is not widely accepted as such, isolation from cultures of repeated eye swab samples suggests that N. sicca may be a pathogen in conjunctival infections. Positive culture for this organism should not be readily dismissed. Such conjunctivitis responded favorably to treatment with netilmicin eye drops.

The influence of systemic drugs on tear constituents.

Tears of patients and laboratory animals on systemic medications have been analyzed for the presence and influence of these agents on tear constituents. Antibiotic penetration into tears, drugs stimulating or retarding lacrimation, and effects on tear electrolytes, lysozyme, and immunoglobulins are reviewed from the literature. Important applications to clinical practice such as contact lens wear, general anesthesia, eye infections, and epiphora or dry eye symptoms are discussed.
