Facial emotion perception in young female students with subsyndromal panic disorder. Behavioral and ERP study.

This study aimed to examine the behavioral and neural correlates of facial emotion recognition in young women with subsyndromal panic disorder (SPD). In the experiment 15 non-medicated women with SPD and 17 matched healthy controls were tasked with recognizing angry, fearful, happy, and neutral facial expressions, and accuracy, reaction time (RT), and event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Significant between-group differences in behavioral characteristics (accuracy of emotion recognition and RT) were not found, however, the SPD subjects demonstrated a slower response to fearful expres

Differences in Facial Expressions between Spontaneous and Posed Smiles: Automated Method by Action Units and Three-Dimensional Facial Landmarks.

Research on emotion recognition from facial expressions has found evidence of different muscle movements between genuine and posed smiles. To further confirm discrete movement intensities of each facial segment, we explored differences in facial expressions between spontaneous and posed smiles with three-dimensional facial landmarks. Advanced machine analysis was adopted to measure changes in the dynamics of 68 segmented facial regions. A total of 57 normal adults (19 men, 38 women) who displayed adequate posed and spontaneous facial expressions for happiness were included in the analyses. The

Is fear in your head? A comparison of instructed and real-life expressions of emotion in the face and body.

The majority of emotion perception studies utilize instructed and stereotypical expressions of faces or bodies. While such stimuli are highly standardized and well-recognized, their resemblance to real-life expressions of emotion remains unknown. Here we examined facial and body expressions of fear and anger during real-life situations and compared their recognition to that of instructed expressions of the same emotions. In order to examine the source of the affective signal, expressions of emotion were presented as faces alone, bodies alone, and naturally, as faces with bodies. The results de

The Doppelgänger effect? A comparative study of forensic facial depiction methods.

This study attempted to assess the reproducibility of 2D and 3D forensic methods for facial depiction from skeletal remains (2D sketch, 3D manual, 3D automated, 3D computer-assisted). In a blind study, thirteen practitioners produced fourteen facial depictions, using the same skull model derived from CT data of a living donor, a biological profile and relevant soft tissue data. The facial depictions were compared to the donor subject using three different evaluation methods: 3D geometric, 2D face recognition ranking and familiar resemblance ratings. Five of the 3D facial depictions (all 3D met

Asymmetry in updating of emotion inferences from faces and situations.

Our inferences about others' emotions often unfold over time as the information accessible to perceivers changes. Yet little is known about these dynamic aspects of emotion inference, including how flexible inferences are with different types of new information. In an integrated analysis of five studies (Ntotal = 925), we examined how people update their inferences of emotions with sequentially unfolding face and situation cues. Using a set of diverse social situations and their portrayals by professional actors, we found robust evidence for an asymmetry in how inferences were updated. People

Processing of fearful faces exhibits characteristics of subcortical functions.

A subcortical pathway is thought to have evolved to facilitate fear information transmission, but direct evidence for its existence in humans is lacking. In recent years, rapid, preattentive, and preconscious fear processing has been demonstrated, providing indirect support for the existence of the subcortical pathway by challenging the necessity of canonical cortical pathways in fear processing. However, direct support also requires evidence for the involvement of subcortical regions in fear processing. To address this issue, here we investigate whether fear processing reflects the characteri

Distinct patterns of monocular advantage for facial emotions in social anxiety.

Individuals with social anxiety often exhibit atypical processing of facial expressions. Previous research in social anxiety has primarily emphasized cognitive bias associated with face processing and the corresponding abnormalities in cortico-limbic circuitry, yet whether social anxiety influences early perceptual processing of emotional faces remains largely unknown. We used a psychophysical method to investigate the monocular advantage for face perception (i.e., face stimuli are better recognized when presented to the same eye compared to different eyes), an effect that is indicative of ear

Facial emotion processing in pediatric social anxiety disorder: Relevance of situational context.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) typically begins in childhood. Previous research has demonstrated that adult patients respond with elevated late positivity (LP) to negative facial expressions. In the present study on pediatric SAD, we investigated responses to negative facial expressions and the role of social context information. Fifteen children with SAD and 15 non-anxious controls were first presented with images of negative facial expressions with masked backgrounds. Following this, the complete images which included context information, were shown. The negative expressions were either a res

Two neural pathways of face processing: A critical evaluation of current models.

The neural basis of face processing has been extensively studied in the past two decades. The current dominant neural model proposed by Haxby et al. (2000); Gobbini and Haxby (2007) suggests a division of labor between the fusiform face area (FFA), which processes invariant facial aspects, such as identity, and the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), which processes changeable facial aspects, such as expression. An extension to this model for the processing of dynamic faces proposed by O'Toole et al. (2002) highlights the role of the pSTS in the processing of identity from dynamic famil

Asymmetries in event-related potentials part 1: A systematic review of face processing studies.

The human brain shows distinct lateralized activation patterns for a range of cognitive processes. One such function, which is thought to be lateralized to the right hemisphere (RH), is human face processing. Its importance for social communication and interaction has led to a plethora of studies investigating face processing in health and disease. Temporally highly resolved methods, like event-related potentials (ERPs), allow for a detailed characterization of different processing stages and their specific lateralization patterns. This systematic review aimed at disentangling some of the cont

Developmental prosopagnosics have widespread selectivity reductions across category-selective visual cortex.

Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe deficits with facial identity recognition. It is unclear which cortical areas contribute to face processing deficits in DP, and no previous studies have investigated whether other category-selective areas function normally in DP. To address these issues, we scanned 22 DPs and 27 controls using a dynamic localizer consisting of video clips of faces, scenes, bodies, objects, and scrambled objects. We then analyzed category selectivity, a measure of the tuning of a cortical area to a particular visual catego

The relation between anger and different forms of disgust: implications for emotion recognition impairments in Huntington's disease.

Initial reports of emotion recognition in Huntington's disease (HD) found disproportionate impairments in recognising disgust. Not all subsequent studies have found this pattern, and a review of the literature to date shows that marked impairments in recognising anger are also often seen in HD. However, the majority of studies have based their conclusions on a single test of facial expression recognition. In the current study we revisit this issue of emotion recognition in HD to address whether the pattern found on one test of facial expression recognition generalised to another, and to differ

The processing of emotion in patients with Huntington's disease: variability and differential deficits in disgust.

BACKGROUND: Some studies of emotion recognition in Huntington's disease (HD) have not supported early reports of selective impairment in the recognition of facial expressions of disgust. This inconsistency could imply that loss of disgust is not a feature of all patients with this disease. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether disproportionate impairment in the recognition of disgust was present in some HD patients and not in others. Second, we examined whether patients unable to recognize facial disgust had parallel impairments in other aspects of the emotion. METHOD: Fourteen HD patients

Specific Neuronal Oscillatory Coupling over Frontal and Occipito-temporal Regions during Face Perception.

Specific neuronal oscillatory activity had been considered as the underling mechanism for face processing. However, few studies focused on the neuronal oscillatory coupling between neuronal assembles during face perception. In this study, we investigated the neuronal oscillatory coupling when human was in a face/non-face perceptual task. Nine normal individuals were included in the study, electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded and the phase lagged index (PLI) was used to assess the neuronal oscillatory coupling. Compared with non-face stimuli, for face stimuli, enhanced neuronal oscillatory c

Mental State Recognition Deficits Linked to Brain Changes in Parkinson's Disease Without Dementia.

Recent studies have reported social cognitive deficits, particularly in emotional processing, in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, a comprehensive characterization of these deficits and their underlying neural correlates remains elusive. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between deficits in the recognition of complex mental states and structural/functional brain changes in non-demented PD individuals. To reach this aim, 24 PD participants underwent clinical assessment, neuropsychological testing and the FAcial Complex Expressions (FACE) test, a novel test of complex me

Testing the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the face inversion effect and the N170 event-related potentials (ERPs) component.

The following study investigates the effects of tDCS on face recognition skills indexed by the face inversion effect (better recognition performance for upright vs. inverted faces). We combined tDCS and EEG simultaneously to examine the effects of tDCS on the face inversion effect behaviourally and on the N170 ERPs component. The results from two experiments (overall N = 112) show that anodal tDCS delivered at Fp3 site for 10 min at 1.5 mA (double-blind and between-subjects) can reduce behaviourally the face inversion effect compared to sham (control) stimulation. The ERP results provide some

Childhood contact predicts hemispheric asymmetry in cross-race face processing.

Participants typically process same-race faces more quickly and more accurately than cross-race faces. This deficit is amplified in the right hemisphere of the brain, presumably due to its involvement in configural processing. The present research tested the idea that cross-race contact tunes cognitive and perceptual systems, influencing this asymmetric race-based deficit in face processing. Participants with high and low levels of contact performed a lateralized recognition task with same- and cross-race faces. Replicating prior work, participants with minimal contact showed cross-race defici
