Marine organisms are a rich source of sulfated polysaccharides with unique structures. Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FucCS) from the sea cucumber Ludwigothurea grisea and sulfated galactan from the red alga Botryocladia occidentalis are one of these unusual molecules. Marine sulfated glycans (MSGs) are a rich source of novel structures with unique biological activities, particularly in anticoagulation and antithrombosis. We describe the case of a 38-year-old man with a history of chronic portal vein thrombosis who presented with abdominal pain after a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedure. Under anticoagulation therapy with rivaroxaban, he experienced active splenic bleeding, leading to hemodynamic instability.
