Transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains between different kinds of pig farms.

The main objective of the present study was to investigate if different kinds of pig farms, like farrowing farms and rearing farms, play a role in the transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to Dutch finishing farms. Twelve farrowing farms, 11 finishing farms, 6 farrow-to finish farms, 1 rearing farm and 1 centre for artificial insemination were included. Screening of 310 pigs from these 31 farms showed 35 pigs (11%) to carry MRSA in their nares. On 7 of the 31 (23%) investigated farms colonized pigs were found, including 3 finishing farms, 3 farrowing farms and 1 fa…

Assessment and promotion of judicious antibiotic use on dairy farms in Washington State.

The aims of this study were to describe antibiotic use and biosecurity practices among Washington State dairy producers and to evaluate the effectiveness of a collaborative approach to promoting judicious antibiotic use on dairy farms. In collaboration with a statewide industry group, Washington State dairy producers participated in a written, self-administered survey in 2003. They were then provided several educational interventions followed by a second written survey in 2005. Sixty-five percent (381) of dairy producers completed the 2003 survey. The most commonly cited drugs used for disease…

Circulation of mosquito-borne viruses in large-scale sheep farms in eastern Slovakia.

Samples of blood sera collected from 608 sheep in large farms of the districts of Trebisov, Michalovce, Vranov nad Toplou and Humenné were investigated in hemagglutination-inhibition test for the presence of mosquito-borne viruses Sindbis, West Nile, Tahyna and Calovo. Antibodies to arboviruses Tahyna (11.5%) and Calovo (10.9%) were detected most frequently, while a lower sero-positivity was recorded to the Sindbis (2.3%) and West-Nile (1.0%) viruses. Certain differences were found in the infection rates in the respective districts: the highest frequency of antibodies to Tahyna and Calovo viru…

FAANGMine Genomic Data Warehouse for Farm Animal Species.

The predictive potential of functional annotation requires that regulatory data be interpreted in the contexts of genes, expression, variants and traits. FAANGMine (https://faangmine.elsiklab.missouri.edu/) is a data warehouse that brings them into a single framework, facilitating the exploration of regulatory elements, variants, QTL, genes and gene annotations in farm animal species. It was designed to highlight reference functional annotation datasets generated by members of the Functional Annotation of Animal Genomes (FAANG) Consortium. FAANGMine was developed using the InterMine biological

Integrated veterinary practices and farm performance of small ruminants.

Small ruminant production contributes directly to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 1 (No Poverty). This study examines the impact of veterinary and ethnoveterinary practices on small ruminant farm performance. Using primary data from 400 smallholder farmers and applying a multinomial endogenous switching regression model, the study estimates the effects of integrated veterinary and ethnoveterinary medicinal practices on herd size, mortality rates, and net farm income. The results indicate that joint adoption of ethnoveterinary and conventional veterinary practices yields superior performance outcom

Pathogen coinfections in wild and farmed salmonids: A systematic review.

Coinfections have been reported in a wide range of organisms, including wild and farmed salmon and trout. However, the effects of coinfections on host resistance to pathogens remain poorly understood. A primary pathogen can modulate the host's immune response to subsequent infections, either by suppressing or priming the immune system. However, in some cases, pathogens may compete within the same host, potentially reducing or neutralizing the severity and impact of the disease. This systematic review examines the impacts of coinfections on farmed and wild salmonids, synthesizing evidence from

Crop legacies as genetic targets for sustainable farming systems.

Food production must rise while its environmental footprint falls, an imperative sharpened by pressure to use fewer external inputs. Meeting this challenge requires gains from aspects that crop breeding has so far overlooked. One such source is the soil, because every crop transforms the environment in which it grows, shaping the conditions experienced by the next crop. We propose that these legacy effects, expressed through altered soil nutrients, water, structure and microbial communities, could offer new breeding targets. Many traits that modulate these effects vary within major crop specie

Methodological aspects of investigating the resistome in pig farm environments.

A typical One Health issue, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) development and its spread among people, animals, and the environment attracts significant research attention. The animal sector is one of the major contributors to the development and dissemination of AMR and accounts for more than 50 % of global antibiotics usage. The use of antibiotics exerts a selective pressure for resistant bacteria in the exposed microbiome, but many questions about the epidemiology of AMR in farm environments remain unanswered. This is connected to several methodological challenges and limitations, such as inco

Sarcocystosis in Farm Animals in Brazil: A One-Health Approach.

Sarcocystosis is a parasitic infection caused by obligate intracellular coccidia, which infect humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. More than 200 Sarcocystis species have already been identified, but for many of these, the life cycle, pathogenesis, and clinical signs remain unclear. The infection is cosmopolitan, with high prevalence in cattle herds worldwide. Although the clinical disease in definitive hosts is considered rare, the high number of sporocysts released by them drives the incidence in production animals. Furthermore, sarcocystosis has some One Health relevance due to its zoono

Quantifying farm sustainability through the lens of ecological theory.

The achievements of the Green Revolution in meeting the nutritional needs of a growing global population have been won at the expense of unintended consequences for the environment. Some of these negative impacts are now threatening the sustainability of food production through the loss of pollinators and natural enemies of crop pests, the evolution of pesticide resistance, declining soil health and vulnerability to climate change. In the search for farming systems that are sustainable both agronomically and environmentally, alternative approaches have been proposed variously called 'agroecolo

Diagnosis of bacteria from the CMNR group in farm animals.

The CMNR group comprises bacteria of the genera Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium, Nocardia, and Rhodococcus and share cell wall and DNA content characteristics. Many pathogenic CMNR bacteria cause diseases such as mastitis, lymphadenitis, and pneumonia in farmed animals, which cause economic losses for breeders and represent a threat to public health. Traditional diagnosis in CMNR involves isolating target bacteria on general or selective media and conducting metabolic analyses with the assistance of laboratory biochemical identification systems. Advanced mass spectrometry may also support diagn

Dairy Farm Work and Protection from Gastrointestinal Illness.

Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are a major public health burden in the United States. Due to close contact with animals, farmers may be a high risk subgroup for acute GI infections, though some studies suggest farm work is actually protective against GI illness. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between dairy farm work and GI symptoms over 3 years. A prospective, matched cohort study was used that included 70 adult dairy farm workers and 74 matched (age, gender, ZIP code) non-farm participants from central Wisconsin. The outcome was mean GI symptom scores for abdominal pai

How does reproduction account for dairy farm sustainability?

Sustainability - the new hype of the 21st century has brought discomfort for the government and society. Sustainable agriculture is essential to face our most concerning challenges: climate change, food security, and the environmental footprint, all of which add to consumers' opinions and choices. Improvements in reproductive indexes can enhance animal production and efficiency, guaranteeing profit and sustainability. Estrus detection, artificial insemination (AI), embryo transfer (ET), estrus synchronization (ES), and multiple ovulations are some strategies used to improve animal reproduction

Controlling Salmonella: strategies for feed, the farm, and the processing plant.

Controlling Salmonella in poultry is an ongoing food safety measure and while significant progress has been made, there is a need to continue to evaluate different strategies that include understanding Salmonella-poultry interaction, Salmonella-microbiota interactions, Salmonella genetics and response to adverse conditions, and preharvest and postharvest parameters that enable persistence. The purpose of this symposium is to discuss different strategies to consider from feed milling to the farm to the processing environment. This Poultry Science Association symposium paper is divided into 5 di
