OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between an invalidating childhood environment and eating pathology, including diagnoses, eating attitudes and eating behaviours.
METHOD: Fifty-eight eating-disordered patients completed a measure of invalidating childhood environments, and a standardised measure of eating pathology.
RESULTS: Patients with bulimia nervosa scored higher on levels of paternal invalidation than those with anorexia nervosa. There were no associations at the attitudinal level, but some behaviours were related to perceived parental style. Self-induced vomiting was ass

This study was designed to examine the associations of biological father and social father involvement during childhood with African American young men's development and engagement in risk behaviors. With a sample of 505 young men living in the rural South of the United States, a dual mediation model was tested in which retrospective reports of involvement from biological fathers and social fathers were linked to young men's substance misuse and multiple sexual partnerships through men's relational schemas and future expectations. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that levels

Child feeding practices are crucial for child health, growth, and development. Fathers have a vital role in optimal child-feeding practices, while traditional cultural norms dictate that men are responsible for family finances and leadership, and women are responsible for child care. Hence, this study aimed to assess father involvement in child feeding and associated factors among fathers having children aged 6-24 months in Jinka Town. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinka town from January 1 to February 15, 2024, on 415 randomly selected study participants. Pre-tested

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are associated with disruptions in one-carbon metabolism. In a family-based trio design, we investigated whether plasma concentrations of choline, betaine, and folate are associated with CHD severity.
METHODS: The study included 72 children with CHD, 69 of their mothers and 64 of the fathers. CHD clinical severity was classified according to the European network of population-based registries for the epidemiological surveillance of congenital anomalies (EUROCAT) system and the German PAN study (Prevalence of Congenital Heart Defects in Ne

Anti-SSA/Ro antibodies are necessary but not sufficient to provoke autoimmune-associated congenital heart block (CHB). Genetic factors are likely contributory. Accordingly, HLA-related candidates and single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter region of tumor necrosis factor α and codon 10 in transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) were evaluated in a unique family: the surrogate mother (anti-SSA/Ro positive), the biologic father, and the CHB-affected child (product of ovodonation). There was an HLA mismatch between the affected child and the surrogate mother. However, both the biologic and

An assessment of the impact of cystic fibrosis (CF) was conducted with 43 families. Semistructured parental interviews on family functioning, parent-child interactions, sibling and peer relationships, and medical issues were coded by two independent raters to identify "major," "minor", or "no" problems. Of the 62 questions presented, only 8 were viewed by more than 10% of parents as "major problems." The impact of hospitalization upon parents was the most prevalent "major problem." Parental communication was a "major problem" for 28% of the mothers but for only one father. Ten to 15% of the pa

UNLABELLED: We conducted 40 in-depth interviews and eight focus groups among mothers and fathers (n = 91) of diverse ages in western Uganda to define the relevant domains of maternal capabilities and their relationship to infant and young child feeding practices. This study was directed by a developing theory of maternal capabilities that posits that the impact of health-directed interventions may be limited by unmeasured and poorly understood maternal characteristics. Ugandan caregivers defined three major life events that constrain women's capabilities for childcare: early pregnancy, close c

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health and economic problem, which also increases the risks for child maltreatment. One attribute that may contribute to both IPV and poor parenting is hostility. Moreover, the link between hostility and these outcomes may be mediated by substance use, such that more hostile individuals are at greater risk for using drugs and alcohol, leading them to engage in more aggressive and rejecting behavior toward their partners and children. We tested this possibility in sample of 132 fathers. Additionally, we explored whether hostility and subst

Part 2 of this discussion provides a detailed examination of specific issues associated with the fathers' personal involvement in their child's hospital treatment for paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). In particular, fathers testify to the difficulties they encounter when involved with the restraining of their child-patient for treatment. Issues raised by parents during this study have been addressed by recommendations detailing factors which need to be considered when providing holistic care for the family and the child with leukaemia.

We retrospectively reviewed autopsy records at a statewide medical examiner's office in order to identify and characterize deaths due to child abuse. In a 6-year period in New Mexico, the medical examiner investigated 45 deaths determined to be child abuse-related. Decedents were predominantly male (68.9%), Hispanic White (53.3%), and all were 5 years of age or younger, with a median age of 1 year. Head injuries were the most common cause of death (44.4%), followed by battered baby syndrome (15.6%). Relatives were involved as alleged perpetrators in 80% of the cases, with the father most often

Dimensions of martial conflict, children's emotional security regarding interparental conflict, and parenting style were examined as mediators between parental dysphoria and child adjustment. A community sample of 262 children, ages 8-16, participated with their parents. Behavioral observations were made of parents' interactions during marital conflict resolution tasks, which children later observed to assess their emotional security. Questionnaires assessed parents' dysphoria, parenting, and children's adjustment. Structural equation modeling indicated that parental dysphoria was linked with

The authors report the case of an accidental death of a 3-year-old child who unintentionally shot himself while he was handling his father's handgun. The peculiarity of the observed injury makes the case particularly interesting, along with the fact that, in Italy, unintentional firearm-related deaths are rather uncommon among children and adolescents.Because of the presence of only 1 bullet hole on the parietal-occipital region, radiological cranial examinations were performed before proceeding with the autopsy.Computed tomographic scans were useful to confirm the entrance site of the bullet a

Although adolescents' interpersonal relationships and internalizing problems may shape one another over time, previous work has rarely considered multiple family and school relationships together while testing whether broad prospective associations also reflect changes within adolescents over time. This study investigated bidirectional associations between internalizing problems and adolescents' relationships with mothers, fathers, teachers, and peers. The sample comprised 3,837 Grade 10 students from two Chinese high schools (Mage = 15.40 years, SD = 0.61; 52% female at baseline) who were ass

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between specific types of child mental health problems and severe physical punishment, in combination with other important known risk factors.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Embu, São Paulo, Brazil, as the Brazilian component of a multicountry survey on abuse in the family environment. From a probabilistic sample of clusters that included all eligible households (women aged 15-49 years with a son or daughter < 18 years of age), we randomly selected one mother-child pair per household (n = 813; attrition rate: 17.6%). This study focused
