Impact of cow-calf contact during the first week and following separation on cows' activity, behavior, feed-related parameters, and milk yield and composition.

Dairy farming systems are critically viewed by animal-welfare orientated consumers due to the rapid disruption of the maternal bond caused by immediate separation after birth. Cow-calf contact systems are therefore considered to be a more welfare-friendly alternative, offering varying contact durations and management strategies. One approach within cow-calf contact systems is the use of foster cows for calf rearing, typically introduced within or after the first week of a calf's life. However, separation after a cow-calf contact period may impact animals' behavior. This study examined the effe

Effects of changes in diet energy density and milking frequency and a single injection of cabergoline at dry-off on feeding behavior and rumination time in dairy cows.

Dry-off is a typical management practice, but research on the effects of dry-off on feeding behavior in high-yielding cows is limited. The present study investigated the effects of 2 diet energy densities: lactation diet (normal energy density, NORM) versus a lactation diet diluted with 30% straw (reduced energy density, REDU), both offered ad libitum, and 2 daily milking frequencies (2× vs. 1×) during the 7 d before dry-off day (d 0), and the effects of an injection of either a dopamine agonist [cabergoline (CAB); Velactis, Ceva Santé Animale; labeled for use only with abrupt dry-off; i.e., n…

Appraisal of sub-chronic exposure to lambada-cyhalothrin and/or methomyl on the behavior and hepato-renal functioning in Oreochromis niloticus: Supportive role of taurine-supplemented feed.

The existing study was designed to inspect the toxicological consequences of two pesticides; lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) and methomyl (MTM) and their combination on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) behaviors, oxidative stress, hepato-renal function indices and microarchitectural alterations. In addition, the efficiency of taurine (TUR) to rescue their toxicity was also considered. Juvenile O. niloticus were assigned into eight groups. The control and TUR groups were fed on a basal diet and TUR-enriched (10 g kg1) diet, respectively. The other groups were fed on a basal diet, and exposed to LC

Feeding-produced subchronic high plasma levels of uric acid improve behavioral dysfunction in 6-hydroxydopamine-induced mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

The development of Parkinson's disease (PD) involves the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons caused by oxidative stress. Accumulating clinical evidence indicates that high blood levels of uric acid (UA), an intrinsic antioxidative substance, are associated with reduced risk of PD. However, this hypothesis has not been confirmed by in-vivo experiments. The present study investigated the effects of UA on behavioral abnormalities in the development of PD. We used unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned mice, which were fed on a diet containing 1% UA and 2.5% potassium oxonate (an uricase inhibitor

Weaning age affects growth, feed intake, gastrointestinal development, and behavior in Holstein calves fed an elevated plane of nutrition during the preweaning stage.

Recent research has revealed potential advantages of feeding an elevated plane of nutrition to calves during the preweaning period. However, calves fed more nutrients preweaning may be more susceptible to depressed growth and weaning stress during the transition from liquid to solid feed. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the age of weaning and feed intake, and its influence on growth, gastrointestinal development, and behavioral indicators in dairy calves fed an elevated plane of nutrition during the preweaning period. To meet this objective, 20 female Ho

Structure-activity relationship of linear tetrapeptides Tic-DPhe-Arg-Trp-NH2 at the human melanocortin-4 receptor and effects on feeding behaviors in rat.

The melanocortin subtype-4 receptor (MC4R) has been implicated in the control of feeding behavior and body weight regulation. A series of tetrapeptides, based on Tic-DPhe-Arg-Trp-NH2-a mimic of the putative message sequence "His-Phe-Arg-Trp" and modified at the DPhe position, were prepared and pharmacologically characterized for potency and selectivity. Substitution of His with Tic gave peptides with significant increases in selectivity. The effects of the substitution pattern of DPhe were investigated and it has significant influences on potency and the level of the maximum cAMP accumulation.…

Effect of Dala-Led Behavior Change Communication on Complementary Feeding Practices in Infants and Young Children: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial in Agro-Pastoral Settings of Afar Region, Ethiopia.

Suboptimal complementary feeding remains a major public health concern in Ethiopia, particularly among pastoralist and agro-pastoral communities where mobile livelihoods hinder access to conventional health services. In these settings, numerous studies have highlighted the potential of leveraging culturally embedded leadership structures to enhance health promotion efforts. This study examined whether engaging traditional Dala leaders as agents of Nutrition Behavior Change Communication (DALA-BCC) could improve complementary feeding indicators among infants and young children in the agro-pasto

Performance, feed-sorting behavior, methane and carbon dioxide emissions, nitrogen balance, and nutrient digestibility of dairy heifers fed Kernza intermediate wheatgrass straw.

Kernza straw (KS) is a high-fiber, low-energy byproduct of intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium [Host] Barkworth & D.R. Dewey) that may serve as an alternative forage to increase dietary fill and reduce the risk of over-conditioning in late-pregnant heifers. We hypothesized that inclusion of KS in the diet of late-pregnant heifers would reduce feed intake and BW gain, nutrient digestibility, and urinary N excretion, but increase enteric methane production depending on the level of inclusion. Thus, a complete randomized design study lasting 12 wk was conducted with 24 heifers (507 ±

Anatomical evidence links the stomach to the central amygdala, a region responsive to local GLP-1R agonist induced feeding and nausea-like behaviors in male mice.

BACKGROUND: The glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist liraglutide is an effective therapeutic agent for obesity, primarily through its ability to suppress appetite and delay gastric emptying. However, the central neural substrates mediating its effects on food intake remain incompletely defined. METHODS: Male mice received subcutaneous liraglutide injections in the cervical region to evalutates its effects on feeding behavior and body weight regulation. Retrograde transsynaptic tracing using pseudorabies virus (PRV) was employed to identify central amygdala (CeA) involvement in ga…

Beneficial Effects of Apple Polyphenol Extract and Time-Restricted Feeding on Ulcerative Colitis and Accompanying Depression-like Behaviors Are Correlated with Gut-Brain Axis Modulation.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) and apple polyphenol extract (APE) emerged as promising adjuvant strategies for managing inflammation and gut microbiota imbalances. Ulcerative colitis (UC), characterized by recurrent episodes, is difficult to cure and often accompanied by anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. To investigate whether TRF, APE, or their combined intervention could prevent UC and associated behavioral disorders, a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC model in C57BL/6 male mice was employed, and APE (500 mg/kg·body weight·day) was administered via gavage. Through a 36-day treatm
