Pre-chewing of infant food - expectations towards an old, traditional feeding habit for potential allergy prevention.

Premastication is a traditional feeding method whereby solids are pre-chewed by the mother or sometimes by other relatives and then given to the infant along with the oral microbiota. The aim of this study was to assess if premastication is known or performed among the German population as well as to evaluate the expectations regarding this feeding method, particularly in the context of allergy prevention. Two surveys about premastication were conducted. For the survey of the "general population (GP)" 10,000 participants (18 to 65 years old) were randomly selected from the official population

Lower Protein Intake Supports Normal Growth of Full-Term Infants Fed Formula: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Infant formulas have been conventionally prepared with an excess of total protein in order to provide sufficient amounts of essential amino acids to the rapidly growing infant. However, this practice leads to higher than necessary protein intake during early infant development, inducing accelerated growth patterns correlated with the development of chronic diseases later in life. This study was aimed at assessing the safety of an infant formula enriched with bovine alpha-lactalbumin containing a total protein concentration very close to that of human milk, and determining its efficacy in the s

Feeding difficulties in children with esophageal atresia: treatment by a multidisciplinary team.

Esophageal atresia (EA) is one of the congenital neonatal anomalies whose immediate consequence for the newborn is the inability to feed. Most centers strive to minimize the effects of surgeries and subsequent postoperative complications such as esophageal strictures, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal reflux on the child's ability or motivation to feed. Feeding difficulties in early infancy may not only interrupt maternal expectations of becoming providers of nutrition to their infants but may also influence the infant's development of sensory motor skills and parent-child relationshi

Combining Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention and Kinesiotaping to Improve Feeding Performance in Premature Infants: A Single-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: Feeding problems are common among premature infants and can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and prolonged hospitalization. Effective interventions are needed to improve oral feeding skills. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a combined intervention-Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention (PIOMI) and Kinesiotaping (KST)-on feeding performance in premature infants, compared to each intervention administered individually. METHODS: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with 45 premature infants (gestational age 30-34 wk) diagnosed with feeding difficulties.

Psychometric validation of the infant feeding position scale.

BACKGROUND: Infant feeding is a fundamental daily task and a critical parent-child interaction. Caregivers perform 6-12 feeds daily, often maintaining fixed, uncoordinated postures that can cause musculoskeletal strain, soreness, and injury. PROBLEM: Although various feeding positions are widely practiced, currently no standardized tool evaluates the quality or suitability of a parent's physical posture. Without a validated self-assessment instrument, it is difficult for parents to identify suboptimal positioning, and healthcare providers lack a baseline for evidence-based postural guidance.

Indications and practice for tube feeding in Japanese geriatricians: implications of multidisciplinary team approach.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine how geriatricians decide the indication of tube feeding in the elderly with eating difficulty as a result of several disorders, and to determine the factors associated with their decision making and interventions for dysphagia. METHODS: The design was a cross-sectional study. All board-certified geriatricians in the Japan Geriatrics Society were recruited to this study in September 2010. We sent questionnaires to 1469 geriatricians. Among them, 629 agreed to participate. The survey consisted of self-administered questionnaires regarding demographic in

Avoidance of bottles during the establishment of breast feeds in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants start milk feeds by gavage tube. As they mature, sucking feeds are gradually introduced. Women who choose to breast feed their preterm infant are not always able to be in hospital with their baby and need an alternative approach to feeding. Most commonly, milk (expressed breast milk or formula) is given by bottle. Whether using bottles during establishment of breast feeds is detrimental to breast feeding success is a topic of ongoing debate. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of avoidance of bottle feeds during establishment of breast feeding on the likelihood of

Feeding intolerance during phototherapy in preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Many very preterm infants are treated with phototherapy (PT) for hyperbilirubinemia and it has been reported that PT can negatively affect gut perfusion. Thus, our aim was to evaluate the occurrence of feeding intolerance in the course of PT in these patients. METHODS: We retrospectively studied infants born at 25+0-31+6 weeks from November 2017 to April 2020 who required PT during the first two weeks of life. Patients were used as their own controls recording for each one the occurrence of feeding intolerance after starting PT and the resumption of feeding tolerance after its term

Immediate nipple pain relief after frenotomy in breast-fed infants with ankyloglossia: a randomized, prospective study.

PURPOSE: Ankyloglossia ("tongue-tie") occurs in nearly 5% of neonates, but its clinical significance relating to breast-feeding difficulties is controversial. We tested the hypothesis that in infants with ankyloglossia referred because of breast-feeding difficulties, frenotomy alleviates the symptoms. METHODS: Twenty-five mothers of healthy infants with ankyloglossia were recruited because of sore nipples. Infants were randomized to either of 2 sequences: (1) frenotomy, breast-feeding, sham, breast-feeding (n = 14) or (2) sham, breast-feeding, frenotomy, breast-feeding (n = 11). The mothers a

[Breast- and bottle-feeding in preterm infants: a comparison of behavioral cues].

BACKGROUND: Developmental care has been broadly applied to identify the behavioral cues and care needs of preterm infants. Past studies indicate a significantly higher level of physical distress in bottle-fed preterm infants than in preterm infants who are breastfed. However, no evidence has yet been reported that supports the influence of feeding methods on behavioral cues. PURPOSE: This study compares differences in the type and frequency of behavioral cues between breast- and bottle-fed preterm infants. METHODS: A comparison study design and secondary data analysis method were used to ass…

High-proportion breast milk feeding is associated with a reduction in the incidence of IVH in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect of high-proportion breast milk feeding (>50%) on intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in very preterm infants (VPIs). METHODS: This was a retrospective secondary analysis of a prospective multi-center study, which included 604 VPIs from six hospitals in eastern China between September 2019 and December 2020. The 604 VPIs were divided into two groups according to whether IVH occurred. High-proportion breast milk feeding was defined as breast milk accounting for 51-100% of the total feeding amount both within 7 days and throughout the hospitalization

Transnasal endoscopy for enteral feeding tube placement in critically ill patients.

OBJECTIVE: Early enteral feedings may improve outcomes in critically ill patients. Recently, transnasal endoscopy with an ultrathin transnasal endoscope has been shown to be of value for diagnostic endoscopy without conscious sedation. We developed a technique for the placement of postpyloric feeding tubes in critically ill patients using transnasal endoscopy. We describe our initial experience in a consecutive series of patients. METHODS: We collected data on consecutive intensive care unit patients undergoing bedside transnasal endoscopy for nasoenteric feeding tube placement using a standa

Early Postoperative Intra-Abdominal Pressure and Heart Rate in Relation to Time to Trophic Enteral Feeding After Posterolateral Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair: An Exploratory Cohort Study.

Background: Advances in neonatal intensive care have improved survival in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), shifting the clinical focus toward long-term complications such as feeding difficulties. Initiation of enteral feeding varies across centers, with evidence suggesting that intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) may influence time to feeding and clinical decision-making. We explored associations of early postoperative heart rate (HR), recorded Apgar score, and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) with time to enteral trophic feeding. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 28 consecutive neonates un

Effectiveness of a Novel Feeding Algorithm for Oral Feeding Transition of Infants Born Prematurely.

BACKGROUND: Feeding skill acquisition is commonly a limiting factor determining when an infant born prematurely can be discharged. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine if the addition of a novel feeding progression algorithm (combination of objective data from a suck measurement device and slow flow/low variability nipples) to current neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) standards could decrease feeding-related length of stay (primary outcome). We hypothesized that by timing the initiation of oral feedings to coincide with adequate sensory-motor skill development, feeding-related length of s

Feeding after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: experience of early versus delayed feeding.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have demonstrated that feeding ≤4 hours after placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube is a reasonable option. Many physicians, however, continue to delay feedings until the next day or 24 hours; therefore, we evaluated the safety and effect of early feeding (≤4 hours) after PEG placement in our tertiary care center. METHODS: A retrospective study of 444 patients who underwent PEG between June 2006 and December 2011 was performed. Early feeding was defined as feeding ≤4 hours and delayed feeding was defined as feeding >4 hours. Statistical ana
