Poisoning in animals due to oral application of iron. With description of a case in a horse.

Peroral application of iron salts in various types of anemia was previously considered atoxic. The increased use of iron has, however, led to an increasing number of poisoning in children, taking iron tablets for candy. There have only been reported a few number of spontaneous intoxications in animals, but experimentally it has been possible to produce fatal intoxications in various kinds of animal species. The clinical findings are quite similar in the various animals, starting with vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and metabolic acidosis. If the intoxication is severe, shock and coma may develop, a

Degradation of trichloroethylene in aqueous solution by calcium peroxide activated with ferrous ion.

The application of calcium peroxide (CaO2) activated with ferrous ion to stimulate the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) was investigated. The experimental results showed that TCE could be completely degraded in 5 min at a CaO2/Fe(II)/TCE molar ratio of 4/8/1. Probe compound tests demonstrated the presence of reactive oxygen species HO· and O2(-·) in CaO2/Fe(II) system, while scavenging tests indicated that HO· was the dominant active species responsible for TCE removal, and O2(-·) could promote TCE degradation in CaO2/Fe(II) system. In addition, the influences of initial solution pH and

Waste to value: Synthesis of efficient MnFe2O4 catalytic materials from spent LiMn2O4 cathode materials via FeSO4 reductive leaching and in-situ coprecipitation.

The economic and high-value recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are essential for the sustainable use of natural resources and environmental conservation. This study introduces an innovative approach that integrates FeSO4 reductive acid leaching with in-situ coprecipitation to upgrade spent LiMn2O4 batteries into MnFe2O4 catalytic materials. Leaching experiments show that FeSO4, as an economical reducing agent, achieves over 98% leaching efficiency for Li and Mn under optimized conditions, replacing H2O2. During the reduction and decomposition of LiMn2O4, Fe2+ is oxidized to Fe3+,

Surface microstructures of lunar soil returned by Chang'e-5 mission reveal an intermediate stage in space weathering process.

The lunar soils evolution over time is mainly caused by space weathering that includes the impacts of varying-sized meteoroids and charged particles implantation of solar/cosmic winds as well. It has long been established that space weathering leads to the formation of outmost amorphous layers (50-200 nm in thickness) embedded nanophase iron (npFe0) around the mineral fragments, albeit the origin of the npFe0 remains controversial . The Chang'e-5 (CE-5) mission returned samples feature the youngest mare basalt and the highest latitude sampling site , providing an opportunity to seek the critic

Evidence for the occurrence of Feammox coupled with nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation in natural enrichment cultures.

Feammox is a newly discovered process of anaerobic ammonium oxidation driven by Fe(III) reduction. Nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation (NDFO) is the coupling of Fe(II) oxidation and nitrate reduction to produce N2 under anaerobic conditions. It has not been reported whether the coupling of the two reactions exists in natural enrichment. In this study, enrichment culture experiments were carrired out to prove the occurrence of Feammox with NDFO. The results indicated that the nitrogen and iron cycle were formed during natural enrichment cultures, including Fe(III) reduction and NH4+-N was oxidat

Monomeric MnIII/II and FeIII/II complexes with terminal hydroxo and oxo ligands: probing reactivity via O-H bond dissociation energies.

Non-heme manganese and iron complexes with terminal hydroxo or oxo ligands are proposed to mediate the transfer of hydrogen atoms in metalloproteins. To investigate this process in synthetic systems, the monomeric complexes [M(III/II)H(3)1(OH)](-/2-) and [M(III)H(3)1(O)](2-) have been prepared, where M(III/II) = Mn and Fe and [H(3)1](3-) is the tripodal ligand, tris[(N'-tert-butylureaylato)-N-ethyl)]aminato. These complexes have similar primary and secondary coordination spheres, which are enforced by [H(3)1](3-). The homolytic bond dissociation energies (BDEs(O-H)) for the M(III/II)-OH comple

Functional activators-facilitated FeS transformation enhances petroleum hydrocarbon degradation by promoting functional microbial proliferation.

Bioremediation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH)-contaminated sites often faces a major challenge in sulfur-rich environments, where ferrous sulfide (FeS) immobilizes pollutants and sharply reduces their bioavailability, thereby stalling remediation. This study demonstrates that the bottleneck can be overcome by applying a composite functional activator to induce a targeted shift of the site microenvironment. The activator first selectively suppresses competing iron- and sulfur-reducing bacteria, reducing their relative abundance by 92%, thereby shifting the microbial community structure. C

Mechanistic insights into iron cycling-driven nitrogen removal from biogas slurry via coupled iron-based denitrification and Feammox.

In this study, ferrous-based denitrification was combined with Feammox (Fe(III) reduction coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation) to trigger NH4+ removal through intermittently adding NOx- (NO2- and NO3-) into biogas slurry. The results showed that NOx- oxidized Fe(II), then the generated Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) again, resulting in a continuous iron cycling and nitrogen removal. On day 35, the total nitrogen removal efficiencies in the NO2- (67.52%) and NO3--added (52.32%) groups were significantly higher than that of the control (without NOx-) (P < 0.05). Nitrifying and Anammox micro

Redox Alternation Drives Dynamics of Sediment Reducing Capacity: Dominance of Reducing Organic Substances and Ferrous-Iron/Sulfur Synergistic Mechanisms.

Sediment reducing capacity (RC) regulates benthic habitat function and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nutrients, and pollutants. However, the compositional complexity and dynamic responses of RC to redox alternation remain inadequately characterized. Through laboratory stimulation experiments of redox alternation with 20 freshwater sediments from four water bodies with distinct trophic status in China (Honghu Lake: HL, n = 3; Xiashan Reservoir: XR, n = 6; Yudong Reservoir: YR, n = 7; and Zhanghe Reservoir: ZR, n = 4), we monitored the dynamics of RC and its fractions (RCpH7.0, RCpH2.0),

Vertical heterogeneity of dissolved ferrous and iron speciation in tropical seagrass beds.

Iron is an important trace metal in regulating the ocean biogeochemical cycle. Through in situ field measurements using reverse flow dual-injection analysis (rFDIA), we demonstrate a significant spatial heterogeneity in iron distribution in the water column in three Chinese seagrass beds. Fe2+ concentrations ranged from 2.38 to 10.82 nM and dFe from 10.44 to 18.35 nM across 26 sampling stations. The concentration of Fe2+ in the surface water layer was significantly higher than the bottom within seagrass beds, while opposite trend was observed in unvegetated area, revealing that the seagrass ca

Metabolic trade-offs in Desulfosporosus meridiei: dose-dependent FeS nanoparticles modulate extracellular electron transfer and gene expression for mineral transformation.

Biogenic ferrous sulfide nanoparticles (FeS NPs) regulate sulfate (SO42-)-reducing bacteria (SRB)-driven iron/sulfur cycling in SO42--rich anaerobic environments, yet their dose-dependent impacts on SRB metabolism remain unclear. This study revealed how FeS NPs dose modulates Desulfosporosus meridiei (a model SRB) in reducing schwertmannite (Sch). SRB preferentially reduced Fe(III) over SO42- in Sch via FeS NPs-mediated extracellular electron transfer (EET). At low FeS doses (0-6 mM), the dsr gene expression (sulfur metabolism) associated with mineral transformation increased despite a decline

Exogenous Fe(II) enhanced iron plaque formation influences the adsorption and immobilization of Cd in rice root.

BACKGROUND: Iron plaque on the rice rhizoplane could potentially prevent cadmium (Cd) entry into plant roots. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to study the morphological characteristics and mineral compositions of iron plaque, Cd immobilization mechanism by iron plaque, and its effect on Cd uptake and transport in rice. RESULTS: Exogenous divalent iron ion (Fe(II)) could induce the formation of deep-red iron plaque on rice rhizoplane, which primarily consisted of ferrihydrite, goethite, hematite, iron phosphate, and iron sulfate compounds. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Insights into biostimulation-enhanced microbial detoxification of chromium ore processing residue-contaminated soil: The critical role of Cr(VI) key host-phase transformation and soil microbiota shifts.

The continuous and slow release of Cr(VI) from chromium ore processing residue contaminated soil (COPR-soil) poses a substantial threat to soil and groundwater. Despite microbial reduction is considered as an effective approach for the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, the efficiency and rate of Cr(VI) reduction in COPR-soil, especially Cr(VI) embedded in minerals (e.g., vaterite, Ca/Al-Cr layered double hydroxide (Ca/Al-Cr LDH)) remain low. Here, a biostimulation-enhanced microbial detoxification strategy was developed, utilizing the strong electron transfer properties of FeSx. The rem

Bioenergetics of iron snow fueling life on Europa.

The main sources of redox gradients supporting high-productivity life in the Europan and other icy ocean world oceans were proposed to be photolytically derived oxidants, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the icy shell, and reductants (Fe(II), S(-II), CH4, H2) from bottom waters reacting with a (ultra)mafic seafloor. Important roadblocks to maintaining life, however, are that the degree of ocean mixing to combine redox species is unknown, and ROS damage biomolecules. Here, we envisage a unique solution using an acid mine drainage (AMD)-filled pit lakes analog system for the Europan oc

Synergistic mechanisms of denitrification in FeS2-based constructed wetlands: Effects of organic carbon availability under day-night alterations.

In constructed wetlands (CWs), carbon source availability profoundly affected microbial metabolic activities engaged in both iron cycle and nitrogen metabolism. However, research gaps existed in understanding the biotransformation of nitrogen and iron in response to fluctuations in organic carbon content under day-night alterations. Results demonstrated increased removal efficiency of NO3--N (95.7 %) and NH4+-N (75.70 %) under light conditions, attributed to increased total organic carbon (TOC). This enhancement promoted the relative abundance of bacteria involved in nitrogen and iron processe

Metagenomic analysis reveals enhanced sludge dewaterability through acidified sludge inoculation: Regulation of Fe (II) oxidation electron transport pathway.

The bioleaching utilizing indigenous microbial inoculation can continuously improve the dewaterability of sludge. In this study, metagenomic analysis was innovative employed to identify the key microorganisms and functional genes that affect the dewatering performance of sludge in the bioleaching conditioning process. The results demonstrated that long-term repeated inoculation of acidified sludge resulted in increased abundance of many functional genes associated with the transport of carbohydrate and amino acid. Additionally, genes encoding key iron transport proteins (such as afuA, fhuC, an

Degradation study of δ-hexachlorocyclohexane by iron sulfide nanoparticles: Elucidation of reaction pathway using compound specific isotope analysis and pH variation.

pH influences the reactivity of iron (II) minerals towards halogenated pollutants like hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs). To explore these incompletely understood interactions, we investigated the carbon isotope fractionation of the δ-HCH isomer during dehalogenation by iron sulfide at pHs spanning a pH range across slightly acidic to alkaline domains (5.8-9.6). The δ-1,3,4,5,6-pentachlorocyclohex-1-ene (δ-PCCH) was the intermediate degradation product, while benzene, monochlorobenzene (MCB), but especially 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB), and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TCB), were the main degrad

Inflammatory Cell-Inspired Cascade Nanozyme Induces Intracellular Radical Storm for Enhanced Anticancer Therapy.

Manipulating intracellular levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) is of great potential for cancer treatment. Inspired by the natural mechanism of a radical storm in inflammatory cells via activated and regulatable biocatalysis, the authors herein report a self-powered nanozyme that can enable RONS production in tumor cells via cascade reactions. The nanozymes are constructed via glucose oxidase (GOx)-templated inverse microemulsion polymerization from acrylamide, arginine-acrylamide, ferrocene-acrylate, and N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine, followed by surface coating with hyaluroni
