OBJECTIVE: The effect of gestational age and other factors that could influence the outcome of an electric shock in pregnancy have not been … diac arrhythmias, fetal burn and intrauterine fetal death. If the pregnancy is continued, decreased fetal movements and asphyxia, pathological fetal heart patterns, intrauterine fetal growth retardation, damage to the fetal central nervous system and oligoamnios can occur.
CONCLUSIONS: More large prospective observational studies are necessary for a proper insi …

The present experiment assessed motor response programming and movement time in children with histories of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure (PEA). Alcohol-exposed children between the ages of 7 and 17 years were classified into two groups: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS: n=9) and children with PEA (PEA: n=19) but who did not have the defining characteristics of FAS. The FAS and PEA children were compared with non-alcohol-exposed children (NC: n=23) when completing two tasks: a simple reaction time task (RT alone condition) and a reaction plus movement task (RT+Move condition). The movement involve

The perinatal data of 550 fetuses with a nuchal cord at delivery were compared with those of a control group matched for gestational age, ma … atal deaths that occurred in this group, all of whom presented in the preceding week with decreased fetal movements. The results of the present study suggest that sonographic identification of nuchal cord may be an important observation during third trimester sonography, particularly when evaluating cases of decreased fetal movements.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to describe an in utero management strategy for fetuses with immune-mediated 2° or 3° atrioventricular (AV) block.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The management strategy as applied to 29 fetuses consisted of three parts. First, using fetal echocardiography and obstetrical ultrasound, we assessed fetal heart rate (FHR), heart failure, growth and a modified biophysical profile score (BPS) assessing fetal movement, breathing and tone. Second, we treated all fetuses with transplacental dexamethasone, adding terbutaline if the FHR was<56 bpm. Digoxin and/or intrave…

A great deal has been learned regarding the natural history and pathophysiology of fetal SCT. The logic behind fetal intervention for SCT and hydrops appears to be correct, and open and minimal access techniques of fetal intervention have been shown to be feasible. The development of fetal intervention for SCT has mirrored those developed for other diseases such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia. In a recent presentation, Harrison, the original pioneer in fetal surgery, outlined trends in fetal intervention. The first trend is that of moving from open, invasive techniques to minimally invasiv

UNLABELLED: This study is to examine the degree to which women engage in attachment behaviors toward their unborn children. Cranley's Matern … ternal-fatal attachment increased significantly from 5 to 40 weeks of gestation. Especially feeling fetal movement had positive effect on maternal-fetal attachment. (2) Women who reported negative perception or ambivalent feeling about their pregnancy showed low attachment score. Ecographic assessments of amniotic fluid volumes and their relationship to ante-partum cardiotocographic patterns were retrospectively analyzed in 59 postdate pregnancies. Sonographic evidence of oligoamnios is significantly related with absence of sporadic accelerations and rarity of fetal movements.

We encountered a fetus who exhibited transient (at most 30 s), repeated episodes of tachyarrhythmia (240 bpm). This female neonate was born at 36 weeks of gestation and showed a markedly prolonged QT interval and transient, repeated episodes of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. Congenital long QT syndrome was diagnosed. Retrospective analysis of the videotape showing fetal cardiac movement revealed that atrio-ventricular dissociation was present prenatally and thus, the fetal tachyarrhythmia was due to ventricular tachycardia. To our knowledge, there are few reports of a fetus with the long

The influence of the carotid bodies on fetal breathing activity in utero and on the establishment of postnatal breathing was studied. The electrocorticogram, the electromyogram of the lateral rectus and postural muscles, and tracheal and arterial pressures were monitored on chronically prepared intact and carotid sinus-denervated fetal lambs. The denervated fetuses required a longer time for recovery from the operation, but thereafter the sleeping and breathing behavior was similar to that of the control group. Four of the carotid sinus-denervated fetuses were allowed to be delivered spontaneo

Results of ultrasonographic and echocardiographic studies of 11 fetuses were analysed retrospectively in relation to their pulmonary hypoplasia. Congenital malformations, quality of hydramnios and echocardiographical measurements of fetal chest were estimated. The best symptoms of pulmonary hypoplasia were: oligo/ahydramnios, absence of fetal breathing movements and malformations in fetal chest cavity (diaphragmatic hernia, cardiomegaly, hydrothorax). Systemic malformations were present in each case. The measurements such as CC, CA, HA, (CA-HA) x 100/CA were not accurate enough and we did not

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is a general term for congenital multiple joint contractures, the aetiology of which is variable. Prenatal diagnosis is usually based on the detection of diminished fetal movements and joint contractures on ultrasound. There are also reports of early diagnosis of arthrogryposis in the first and early second trimester by detection of subcutaneous oedema. We report another case of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita with increased nuchal translucency and scoliosis diagnosed by ultrasonography at 15 weeks of gestation. The pregnancy was terminated at the request …

Diagnosis of anencephaly during early pregnancy by ultrasound which is based on the demonstration of absent cranial vault and cerebral hemispheres, has been known for more than 25 years. Morphological records of abnormal and normal brain structure in anencephalic fetuses have been clearly understood. Nevertheless, there are still unknown facts about fetal behavior affected by anencephaly. Although abnormal motor behavior in anencephalic fetuses has been reported, detailed quantitative and qualitative study of the fetal behavior assessed by direct four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound does not exist

BACKGROUND: Maternal coagulopathy and adverse fetal effects are both possible results of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy. This case demonstrates the potentially fatal outcomes when both occur simultaneously.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old multiparous woman at 31 weeks gestation presented with mild COVID-19 symptoms and decreased fetal movement. Evaluation included a biophysical profile with 2/8 scoring and fetal heart rate tracing that developed a terminal bradycardia. She underwent an emergent cesarean delivery that was complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation (fibrinogen …

Fetal hypokinesia or akinesia encompasses a broad spectrum of disorders, united by impaired movement in utero. Often, the underlying aetiology is genetic in origin, affecting part of the neuromuscular system. The affordable and high-throughput nature of next-generation DNA sequencing has led to an explosion in disease gene discovery across rare diseases, including fetal akinesias. A genetic diagnosis has clinical utility as it may affect management and prognosis and informs recurrence risk, facilitating family planning decisions. More broadly, knowledge of disease genes increasingly allows pop

The objective of this study is to present and describe the fetal heart rate appearance in pregnancies complicated by an antenatal spontaneous umbilical cord hematoma that resulted in a live birth. Three cases of antenatal spontaneous umbilical cord hematoma are described. All three patients presented with a complaint of decreased fetal movement. The fetal heart monitor tracings on admission are depicted and discussed. In all three cases, the fetal heart rate pattern showed decreased variability with an absence of accelerations. Decelerations were noted but were identified in 25% or less of the…

BACKGROUND: Absent or reversed end-diastolic flow velocity (ARED) in the umbilical arteries is typically associated with severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), although there may be other causes, such as aneuploidy.
CASE: A healthy 30-year-old gravida 2, para 0 woman with an uneventful pregnancy and normal prenatal screening test results presented with sudden cessation of fetal movement at 26 weeks' gestation. Ultrasound demonstrated unexplained ARED with normal fetal growth and normal amniotic fluid volume. The fetus died during transfer to the labour and delivery unit. The cause of …

Cord entanglement and conjoined twins are unique complications of monoamniotic monochorionic pregnancy. This case report describes a case of monoamniotic twins' intrauterine demise due to lethal cord entanglement. A 26-year-old unbooked primigravida was reported in the emergency labor room at 32 weeks with the complaint of loss of fetal movements since the previous day. On obstetric examination, the uterus appeared enlarged and discordant with the gestational age, multiple fetal parts were felt on palpation, and the pelvic grip was empty. Doppler could not detect any fetal heartbeat. The emerg…
