Antibodies to hemorrhagic fever viruses in domestic livestock in Niger: Rift Valley fever and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

A repository of domestic animal sera collected in Niger between 1984 and 1988 was assayed for antibody against two zoonotic hemorrhagic fever viruses known to be present in the West African Sahel. A total of 2,540 serum samples from 2,324 cattle, sheep, goats, and camels were tested by an IgG-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the 80% plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT80) for Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus antibody. Of the 2,540 sera tested for RVF-specific IgG antibody, 1,676 sera from cattle, sheep, and goats were examined for RVF-specific IgM antibody by ELISA. A …

Deep Dive Into Familial Mediterranean Fever in a Child Without Fever.

This case report entails the details of a 12-year-old Egyptian boy who had recurrent episodes of shortness of breath, ascites, and pericardial effusions starting at the age of 10, returning with worsening symptoms in April of 2020. The lab findings indicated a critically elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) of 107.2 mg/L; a clinically notable inflammation process was festering. This case was all the more interesting as this boy did not present with a fever, making the diagnosis a difficult one. Nonetheless, genetic Mediterranean fever (MEFv) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing confirmed t…

[Tick-borne relapsing fever : An unrecognized cause of fever in travellers].

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne relapsing fever is a usual cause of fever in West Africa. Except relapsing febrile episodes, there are no pathognomonic signs and diagnosis is difficult because Borrelia density in patient's blood is low. CASE REPORTS: Tick-borne relapsing fever was revealed by the presence of spirochetes in a blood sample to search malaria in two men, 24 and 31 year-old, returned from Mali. CONCLUSION: This diagnosis should be evocated in patients having fever after a trip in infested area, as malaria, both infections can be associated.

A rare cause of fever in an adult: a case of familial Mediterranean fever.

BACKGROUND: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a hereditary autoinflammatory disease characterized by recurrent fever attacks and serositis. Nonspecific manifestations of the FMF can mimic many common acquired disorders such as infections and acute abdomen. This can delay recognition for many years and lead to comprehensive assessments and even unnecessary surgeries. Untreated FMF may lead to serious complications such as end-stage renal disease and malabsorption due to amyloid deposits in the kidneys and the digestive system. Colchicine has been used successfully to treat FMF since the 197…

Fever, marked tachycardia and vesiculobullous rash in an infant with Chikungunya fever.

We describe a 3-month-old male infant who presented with acute onset fever, irritability and marked tachycardia. ECG was suggestive of atrial tachycardia. He developed erythematous blanchable skin rash on day 2 of illness, which progressed to vesiculobullous lesions over a few days' time. The child was managed with intravenous adenosine, carefully monitored fluid boluses, oxygen supplementation and close monitoring. Tachycardia improved within 24 hours. Blood for Chikungunya PCR was positive. The child was discharged after 5 days of hospitalisation with bullous lesions evolving into hyperpigme…

[Hereditary intermittent fevers, other than familial Mediterranean fevers].

Familial Mediterranean fever is no more the sole hereditary disease characterized by recurrent inflammatory attacks. Three other main entities have now been defined, both at clinical and genetic levels: a dominant disease due to mutations of one of the tumour necrosis factor receptor, called TRAPS for tumour necrosis factor receptor associated periodic syndrome, the hyper-immuno-globulinaemia D and periodic fever syndrome (HIDS), which is a metabolic disorder and the Muckle-Wells syndrome. A thorough diagnosis of these diseases is crucial for appropriate management and treatment.

Clinical predictors of malaria in Gambian children with fever or a history of fever.

Diagnosis of malaria in children is difficult without laboratory support because the symptoms and signs of malaria overlap with those of other febrile illnesses such as pneumonia. Nevertheless, in many parts of Africa diagnosis of malaria must be made without laboratory investigation. Therefore, a scoring system has been developed to assist peripheral health care workers in making this diagnosis. Four hundred and seven Gambian children aged 6 months to 9 years who presented to a rural clinic with fever or a recent history of fever were investigated. A diagnosis of malaria was made in 159 child…

Absence of endotoxin fever but not prostaglandin E2 fever in the Brattleboro rat.

Changes in colonic temperature following intracerebroventricular injection (icv) of bacterial endotoxin or prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were measured in Long-Evans (LE) and Brattleboro (DI) rats. Indwelling cannulas were implanted into the brains of rats for subsequent microinjection into a lateral cerebral ventricle. Microinjection of 1 microgram of bacterial endotoxin into a lateral cerebral ventricle produced a fever in the LE rat but not in the DI rat. Daily injections of 1 microgram of endotoxin icv in the DI rat did not result in a fever. Intraperitoneal injections of 50 micrograms of bacteri…
