A 14-year-old girl with bulimia was found to have an apparent submucosal mass of the gastric cardia by upper gastrointestinal series and endoscopy. At laparotomy the mass was found to be a 5 cm in diameter subcapsular serous splenic cyst compressing the stomach but not attached to it. The clinical and diagnostic features of this unusual lesion are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the endoscopic findings.

Eleven hepatic resections were performed by means of a divergent Nd:YAG laser. The beam was transmitted through a fiberoptic delivery system without any handpiece. The shortest resection time and most limited ischemic damage (4 mm) were obtained with 80-W power shoots and a low divergent beam (4 degrees 2 for full angle). The role of laryngeal adjustments for phonetic variations of voicing in Japanese--vowel devoicing and intervocalic /h/ voicing--was investigated using laryngeal electromyography (EMG) and fiberoptic endoscopy. The results indicated that the vowel devoicing was accompanied by EMG activity patterns of the posterior cricoarytenoid and interarytenoid different from those for fully voiced vowels, causing the glottis to be wide open. A 67-year-old man presented to the pulmonary service with left shoulder and arm pain. Examination disclosed a left Horner's syndrome. Supraclavicular exploration at another hospital was not helpful. Transbronchial biopsy through a flexible fibreoptic bronchoscope retrieved tissues showing poorly differentiated carcinoma. There are no previous reports of the use of the technique in the diagnosis of a Pancoast tumour with a normal standard chest radiograph.

Design principles and performance of a new fiberoptic oximeter-densitometer for measurement of blood oxygen saturation are described. This instrument is capable of performing measurements using either an intravascular catheter, flow-through cuvette, or earpiece. The operations of the flow-through cuvette and earpiece are based on the principles of light transmission, that of the catheter on the principles of hemoreflection. The system incorporates five interference filters permitting the selection of a particular wavelength or combination of wavelengths to perform different modes of operation.

In this study, integrated proteomic and transcriptomic analyses identified peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) as a novel urinary biomarker for bladder cancer (BC). PRDX1 was significantly upregulated in BC tissues and was associated with poorer overall survival.
