Arthroscopic treatment for intra-articular fibroma of the tendon sheath in a teenager.

An adolescent female patient presented with atraumatic left knee pain and limited flexion. MRI demonstrated evidence of a soft tissue lesion abutting the posterior cruciate ligament. Differential diagnosis included pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) and fibroma of the tendon sheath (FTS). Following arthroscopic biopsy, histopathological evaluation confirmed FTS. The tumour was then excised via an arthroscopic approach. This case report provides a unique example of FTS abutting the cruciate ligaments in an uncommonly young female patient. It highlights the importance of including benign pr…

Endoscopic Resection of a Toe Web Fibroma That Was Mimicking a Morton's Neuroma.

Fibroma of tendon sheath is a rare benign tumor originating in the tendon or tendon sheath. It most commonly occurs in upper extremity and rarely presents in the foot. In this report, a case of fibroma of tendon sheath in the web space with Morton's neuroma-like symptoms was presented. The tumor was resected endoscopically with preservation of the interdigital nerve. Post-operatively, the symptoms were subsided and the toe sensation was preserved. There was no sign of recurrence of the tumor at the end of 3-year-period of follow-up.

Non-ossifying Fibroma Pathological Fracture in a Patient With Lactose Intolerance.

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) is a frequently occurring benign tumor of children and adolescents. In the long bones, it appears as an eccentric, expanded lesion in the metaphyseal diaphyseal area. Most cases are asymptomatic and resolve at a later age while others might become symptomatic and have a high risk of fracture. We present a case of a 15-year-old boy who is known to have lactose intolerance, suffered a pathological fracture following trauma, and was diagnosed with non-ossifying fibroma of the proximal tibia. The etiology of these lesions is not well-known. However, there might be a rel…

Ossifying fibroma in the maxilla and orbital floor: report of an uncommon case.

Benign fibro-osseous lesions occur when normal bone is replaced by cellular fibrous connective tissue and mineralized structures. One rare type of these lesions is the ossifying fibroma (OF). The aim of this study is to report an unusual case of OF in a 57-year-old female. Physical examination showed facial asymmetry without any tenderness, fluctuation, ocular pain, or ophthalmoplegia. Imaging exams revealed a solid mass involving the left maxilla and orbital floor. Surgical resection was performed without any complications or sequelae, and the histopathological results confirmed OF. Although …

An Unusual Presentation of Ovarian Fibroma Originating from an Autoamputated Ovary.

We describe an extremely rare case of an unusually presented ovarian fibroma adherent to the sigmoid colon originating from an autoamputated ovary. A 64-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with an abnormal shadow that was approximately 4 cm in diameter in the pelvic cavity detected on abdominal X-ray imaging. Computed tomography demonstrated an irregularly shaped tumor with calcification in the pelvic cavity. Laparoscopy revealed that the tumor was adherent to the surface of the sigmoid colon with a discontinuous shell and empty cavity. The left ovary was lacking, although the left sal…

Utility of cardiac imaging in diagnosis of atypical presentation of cardiac fibroma.

Primary cardiac tumours are relatively rare in the paediatric population, with benign tumours accounting for >90% of cases. Cardiac fibromas are rare primary tumours that typically reside in the ventricles. Symptoms are usually the result of blood outflow obstruction or disruption of the cardiac conduction system. They do not typically regress and usually require surgical intervention. In this case, we report a rare finding of a right atrial fibroma in an 18-month-old female who presented with lethargy and vomiting. Chest X-ray revealed an enlarged cardiac silhouette, and follow-up CT showed a…

Clinicopathological features of peripheral ossifying fibroma in a series of 41 patients.

Peripheral ossifying fibromas are benign mesenchymal lesions that usually arise in the anterior maxilla of young female patients. Histologically they consist of spindle cell proliferation with focal mineralisation. We reviewed 48 specimens from 41 patients and recorded the clinical data, sex, and age of the patients, site and size of the lesions, treatment, and postoperative outcome. Histologically the presence of mature, woven bone, cementum, and calcifications were evaluated and evaluated immunohistochemically. Lesions were more frequent in female patients in the third and fourth decade, and…

Juvenile ossifying fibroma in a Nigerian boy: a rare case report.

Cases of jaw masses abound in our environment which is a tropical one, with Burkitt lymphoma being the commonest aetiology. However rarer causes like juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma should also be considered. It is a locally aggressive tumor with high recurrent potentials occurring in children and adolescent. Here we present the clinical features, physical findings and challenges in diagnosing and management of a 7-year-old boy who presented to the Paediatric unit of our institute with a right jaw mass.

Desmoplastic Fibroma Recurrence Associated with Tuberous Sclerosis in a Young Patient.

Case Report. A nine-year-old patient with a diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis (with no pathological record) that showed calcifications at the brain level. Besides, the case showed the Vogt triad (epilepsy, mental retardation, and sebaceous adenoma). The patient clinically showed a volume increase of hard consistency, without suppuration and no sessile that included the following teeth 73, 74, and 75. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was obtained, and it displayed a delimited unilocular lesion. After surgical excision, the histopathological report was desmoplastic fibroma (DF). It was observe…

Multiple calcifying aponeurotic fibroma: case report and review of the literature.

We describe the first case of diagnosis of generalized calcifying aponeurotic fibroma in 52 year-old man receiving long-term therapy for seronegative rheumatoid arthritis with rheumatoid nodules. The prevalence of lesions (presence of multiple subcutaneous nodules in the aponeuroses and fascia of the head, neck, trunk, upper and lower extremities with massive deposition of calcium salts), and a combination with monoclonal secretion (IgGκ serum, BJκ in the urine), raised inflammation markers, suggest that this case of the disease is unique, so both in domestic and foreign literature contains no…

Chondromyxoid Fibroma of the Skull Base: Our Experience with an Elusive Disease.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is an extremely rare lesion of the skull base. This histologic type typically predilects metaphysis of the long bones. It is locally invasive/infiltrative, and this tendency is more concerning in the skull base, where a radical resection is often technically impossible because of the presence of vital neurovascular structures. We present a case of a 19-year-old woman who presented with a sudden onset of right facial weakness, progressively worsening to a severe disfiguring motor weakness. Gadolinium-enhanced brain magnetic resonance imaging showed an osteolytic lesi…

Surgical Management of Ossifying Fibroma in Maxilla: Report of Two Cases.

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from undifferentiated cells of the periodontal ligament. Ossifying fibroma have a well-defined border that differentiates it from fibrous dysplasia clinically, these tumors manifest as a round or ovoid, expansile, painless, slow-growing mass may displace the roots of adjacent teeth and also cause root resorption. They occur at second to fourth decade of life. Radiologically the lesion appears as a dense radiopaque mass surrounded by a thin, well-defined regular radiolucent rim. Patient underwent thorough history taking and complete…

Central odontogenic fibroma of the mandible: A case report with diagnostic considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic fibroma (OF), a rare odontogenic tumor of mesodermal origin, has been thought to originate from either dental follicle, periodontal ligament, or dental papilla [1]. Different studies reported high variability in the incidence rate as being between 3 and 23% of all odontogenic tumors [2,3]. OF manifests a dual character at the histopathological examination showing odontogenic epithelial structures mimicking those observed in biopsy of ameloblastoma and, in addition, peculiar fragments of cellular stroma. The clinical and radiological features of OF are similar to other…

Nonossifying fibroma presenting as an aneurysmal bone cyst: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Nonossifying fibroma is a common fibrous bone lesion in children that occurs in the metaphysis of the long bones of the lower extremities. The lesion rarely leads to aneurysmal bone cyst, which is characterized as a blood-filled space. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 13-year-old Japanese boy with a complaint of discomfort in the thigh and a small, well-defined, osteolytic lesion with cortical thinning located in the medullary space of the distal diaphysis of the femur. At 10-month follow-up, the size of the lesion had increased. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance…

Tooth in the nose: unusual presentation of a misdiagnosed maxillary ossifying fibroma.

Fibro-osseous lesions involving the paranasal sinuses are uncommon, and making a determination of their histologic type is challenging. Correlating clinical and surgical findings with radiologic and histologic characteristics is essential for making a definitive diagnosis. We describe a case of misdiagnosed maxillary ossifying fibroma presenting as a solitary mass that completely filled and enlarged the left maxillary sinus. Another interesting finding was the presence of a molar tooth embedded in the tumor. We briefly comment on the genesis, natural course, and differential diagnosis of this …

Peripheral ossifying fibroma: a clinical and immunohistochemical study of four cases.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a lesion of the gingival tissues that predominantly affects women and is usually located in the maxilla anterior to the molars. The definitive diagnosis is established by histological examination, which reveals the presence of cellular connective tissue with focal calcifications. Surgery is the treatment of choice, though the recurrence rate can reach 20%. We present a clinical and histological review - including a detailed immunohistochemical analysis - of four cases of POF diagnosed and treated at our hospital. All four patients were women, and two were …

Ossifying fibroma of the maxillary sinus at the Kara (Togo) Teaching Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma of the jaw is a benign tumorous disease, somewhat rare and aggressive. It frequently targets the mandible, but seldom the maxillary. CASE STUDY: The present study reports the first case of left maxillary sinus fibroma treated at the Kara Teaching Hospital in North Togo. It occurred in a 29-year-old patient who experienced slow-growing tumefaction of the left maxillary sinus, resulting in deformation of the left side of the face in the maxillary region and ipsilateral nasal obstruction. Orthopantomography showed a displacement of teeth 21, 22, and 23 with an abn…
