One job, one standard: how the revised NFPA standard 1580 alters firefighter fit for duty status across age.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets operational standards for fire departments, including criteria for evaluating firefighters' readiness and fit for duty status. The recently revised NFPA 1580 standard replaces absolute aerobic capacity threshold with the American College of Sports Medicine's general population, percentile-based classification system. The purpose of this study was to compare classification outcomes between the previous NFPA 1582 and the revised NFPA 1580 to examine whether age, sex, or body mass index (BMI) were associated with differing fit for duty status' …

High work output combined with high ambient temperatures caused heat exhaustion in a wildland firefighter despite high fluid intake.

The purpose of this case study is to examine the physiological/behavioral factors leading up to heat exhaustion in a male wildland firefighter during wildland fire suppression. The participant (24 years old, 173 cm, 70 kg, and 3 years firefighting experience) experienced heat exhaustion following 7 hours of high ambient temperatures and arduous work on the fire line during the month of August. At the time of the heat-related incident (HRI), core temperature was 40.1 °C (104.2 °F) and skin temperature was 34.4 °C (93.9 °F). His work output averaged 1067 counts·min(-1) (arbitrary units for measu

Cardiac Efficiency as a Potential Marker of Firefighter Expertise: A Pilot Study of Heart Rate Variability Monitoring in Realistic Search-and-Rescue Training.

Expertise in high-stakes occupations is typically evaluated through performance outcomes, potentially neglecting physiological efficiency-a dimension critical for career longevity in physically demanding work. In this pilot study, we investigated whether expert firefighters achieve comparable task performance with lower cardiovascular activation and faster autonomic recovery than novices during realistic search-and-rescue operations. Twenty-two male firefighters completed navigation tasks in a high-fidelity training facility under operational conditions (complete darkness, full protective equi…

Local Variance-Guided Adaptive Infrared-Thermal Sensor Fusion Framework for Human Target Detection in Smoke-Filled Firefighting Environments.

Reliable human target detection in smoke-filled environments is essential for firefighting robots and rescue perception systems. However, conventional RGB cameras are severely degraded by dense smoke, while a single infrared or thermal imaging sensor cannot simultaneously provide sufficient structural details and reliable target-related thermal information. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a local variance-guided adaptive infrared-thermal sensor fusion framework for human target detection in smoke-filled environments, aiming to alleviate smoke-induced degradation in multimodal

Psychopathological symptoms and their five-year change in a tracking cohort of Chinese firefighters: a multi-site observational study using the SCL-90.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters in China are routinely exposed to physically and emotionally demanding situations, yet long-running tracking data on their mental-health profile are still scarce. Most published Chinese firefighter studies are cross-sectional, single-site, or limited to a particular incident. We took advantage of an annual occupational-health screening program to look at the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) profile of firefighters from two coastal cities, with the explicit goal of asking whether the symptom picture is stable across years and which factors drive it. METHODS: Annual SCL-…

Evaluating workplace protection factors (WPFs) of different firefighter PPE interface control measures for select volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Structural firefighters are exposed to a complex set of contaminants and combustion byproducts, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Additionally, recent studies have found structural firefighters' skin may be exposed to multiple chemical compounds via permeation or penetration of chemical byproducts through or around personal protective equipment (PPE). This mannequin-based study evaluated the effectiveness of four different PPE conditions with varying contamination control measures (incorporating PPE interface design features and particulate blocking materials) to protect against ing…

Perceived social support functions as a resilience in buffering the impact of trauma exposure on PTSD symptoms via intrusive rumination and entrapment in firefighters.

Resilience has been highlighted as a pivotal factor in overcoming the detrimental impact of trauma. The present study tests a resilience model of trauma using risk (rumination, emotion regulation, and entrapment) and protective (perceived social support) factors in a sample of firefighters who are at heightened risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, using a cross-sectional design. Specifically, the present study focuses on perceived social support as a resilience factor against PTSD symptoms, in response to trauma exposure. The sample included 545 firefighters from six large cities in Korea,…

Biomarkers of Airway Disease, Barrett's and Underdiagnosed Reflux Noninvasively (BAD-BURN) in World Trade Center exposed firefighters: a case-control observational study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter exposure (PM) is a cause of aerodigestive disease globally. The destruction of the World Trade Center (WTC) exposed first responders and inhabitants of New York City to WTC-PM and caused obstructive airways disease (OAD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Barrett's Esophagus (BE). GERD not only diminishes health-related quality of life but also gives rise to complications that extend beyond the scope of BE. GERD can incite or exacerbate allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma. Disease features of the aerodigestive axis can overlap, often necessitati

The unique and interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity and emotion dysregulation in relation to posttraumatic stress, depressive, and anxiety symptoms among trauma-exposed firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters are chronically exposed to traumatic events. Relatedly, past work has documented high rates of psychiatric problems, such as posttraumatic stress symptoms and depression, among firefighters. Less is known regarding anxiety symptoms among firefighters. Moreover, little work has examined risk/maintenance factors related to these symptoms among firefighters. Doing so may be important to developing interventions tailored to trauma-exposed firefighters. The current study examined symptoms of posttraumatic stress, depression, panic disorder, and social anxiety among trauma-e…
