PURPOSE: To investigate changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with accommodation in patients with intermittent exotropia (X(T)), and to evaluate how these changes are affected by strabismus surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive patients scheduled for strabismus surgery due to X(T) were retrospectively analyzed. IOP was measured using a rebound tonometer (iCare) during strabismus examinations under three conditions: binocular viewing at distance (bIOP-D), binocular viewing at near (bIOP-N), and monocular viewing at near (mIOP-N). Correlations were assessed between IO

BACKGROUND: Disconjugate eye movements are essential for depth perception in frontal-eyed species, but their underlying neural substrates are largely unknown. Lesions in the midbrain can cause disconjugate eye movements. While vertically disconjugate eye movements have been linked to defective visuo-vestibular integration, the pathophysiology and neuroanatomy of horizontally disconjugate eye movements remains elusive.
METHODS: A patient with a solitary focal midbrain lesion was examined using detailed clinical ocular motor assessments, binocular videooculography and diffusion-weighted MRI, wh

BACKGROUND: Diplopia is the double vision of a single object, and can be binocular or monocular. Binocular diplopia is caused by the misalignment of the visual axes, with images falling on the fovea of the fixating eye and on the extra-foveal retina of the non-fixating eye, as a consequence of both neurological (i.e., oculomotor nerve palsies, ocular myopathies, neuromuscular junction disorders) and ophthalmic disorders (i.e., decompensation of a pre-existing strabismus). In contrast, monocular diplopia is generally explained by intraocular pathology (i.e., refractive errors, ocular media abno

AIM: Visual impairment is present in almost all patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) and, due to their early onset, constitute an important disabling aspect of the syndrome: the quality of vision is limited by dyspraxia and oculomotor abnormal movements. The purpose of this observational study was to describe visual disorders, notably oculomotor impairment, in a sample of children with AT.
METHODS: Fifteen AT patients (mean age 12 years and 4 months) underwent a neurovisual evaluation, particularly focused on oculomotor functions (fixation, smooth pursuit, saccades, and abnormal ocular mo

In a previous work, we showed and compared the wound healing properties of aFGF and bFGF topically administered on totally de-epithelialized rabbit corneas. Pharmacokinetic and autoradiographic studies were then performed to investigate the sites of accumulation of bFGF in ocular structures, both on de-epithelialized and intact rabbit eyes. After one single instillation of 125I-bFGF, all the ocular structures were dissected and the measurement of the radioactivity allowed to establish kinetic curves. The results showed a very important and early fixation of bFGF on denuded cornea (10 minutes)

Children with amblyopia read slower than their peers during binocular viewing. Ocular motor dysfunction typical of amblyopia may cause slow reading. It is unclear whether this is due to fixation instability or increased forward saccades. We examined whether removing the requirement of inter-word saccades helps children with amblyopia read at a similar rate as controls using a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. We also assessed whether reading rate was related to fixation instability. Children with amblyopia (n = 32) and control (n = 30) children ages 8-12 years silently read sentenc

The differential diagnosis of vertigo or dizziness as a result of cerebellar disorders can be difficult as many patients with a cerebellar pathology do not present with the full spectrum of cerebellar signs. The main goal of this study was to describe the typical clinical features of these patients with vertigo or dizziness of a cerebellar origin. We reviewed the medical records of 5400 patients with vertigo and dizziness from our tertiary outpatient clinic for vertigo and balance disorders. In 459 the diagnosis of "cerebellar vertigo or dizziness" was made; 90 patients were excluded from furt

BACKGROUND: Yamane's flanged intrascleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation is widely used in eyes without capsular support, but limitations in conventional conjunctival marking may affect surgical precision and consistency. This study compared the clinical outcomes of modified Yamane scleral-fixated IOL implantation using the Miri 4-Points Marker versus Castroviejo calipers, assessing visual outcomes and complications between these two approaches.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study at a single hospital of Malaysia included 44 eyes operated on between 2024 and 2025. Conjunctival markings

Contrast-enhanced CT is the standard imaging technique in oncological objectives. Rates of missed pathologies depend on work experience of the respective radiologists. Thus the aim of this study is to analyze the eye movements of professionals while reading CT images in order to evaluate whether the eye-fixation patterns and search strategies of experienced radiologists could explain higher detection rates of pathologies and whether such patterns can be learned.Anonymized images of 10 patients were presented to three medical students and six radiologists with different levels of work experienc

Histopathological, neuroimaging and genetic findings indicate cerebellar abnormalities in autism, but the extent of neurophysiological dysfunction associated with those findings has not been systematically examined. Suppression of intrusive saccades (square wave jerks) and the ability to sustain eccentric gaze, two phenomena requiring intact cerebellar function, were examined in 52 high-functioning individuals with autism and 52 age- and IQ-matched healthy subjects during visual fixation of static central and peripheral targets. Rates of intrusive saccades were not increased in autism during v

The present paper reports on the case of an 18-year-old man with congenital cataract and microphthalmos of the left eye, divergent strabismus and sursum vergens. Macular degenerative lesions were also present in the right eye, hypoplasia of the iris in both eyes and fixation nystagmus with equal jerks in both directions. The general physical examination showed congenital atrial septal defect. The morbid cardiac and ocular association plead for rubella embryopathy.
