Leveling the head relative to ground slope improves visual odometry in simulated bees.

In honeybees, foragers use the waggle dance to communicate the direction and 'a distance' to a food source from the hive to other members of the colony. Behavioral studies indicate that dancing foragers estimate this 'distance' during outward flights (from the hive to the food source) based on visual cues, in particular optic flow, even over mountain slopes. While optic flow-based biologically plausible models for the honeybee visual odometer were previously presented, their robustness with respect to uneven terrain has not yet been investigated. In this study, we present a new model for the h

Homing pigeons develop local route stereotypy.

The mechanisms used by homing pigeons (Columba livia) to navigate homeward from distant sites have been well studied, yet the mechanisms underlying navigation within, and mapping of, the local familiar area have been largely neglected. In the local area pigeons pote ntially have access to a powerful navigational aid--a memorized landscape map. Current opinion suggests that landmarks are used only to recognize a familiar start position and that the goalward route is then achieved solely using compass orientation. We used high-resolution global positioning system (GPS) loggers to track homing pi

Wind-blown mosquitoes and introduction of Japanese encephalitis into Australia.

Backtrack simulation analysis indicates that wind-blown mosquitoes could have traveled from New Guinea to Australia, potentially introducing Japanese encephalitis virus. Large incursions of the virus in 1995 and 1998 were linked with low-pressure systems that sustained strong northerly winds from New Guinea to the Cape York Peninsula.

Light at night, chronodisruption, melatonin suppression, and cancer risk: a review.

Light exposure during the night is becoming progressively more common throughout the world, particularly in areas where electricity is commonly used. Also, the availability of artificial light has allowed humans to work or recreate throughout the 24-hour day. Based on photographs taken of the Earth from outer space, it is also apparent that true darkness is disappearing. For years it was assumed that polluting the daily dark period with light was inconsequential in terms of animal/human physiology. That assumption, however, has proven incorrect. Light at night has two major physiological actio

Hearing on the fly: the effects of wing position on noctuid moth hearing.

The ear of the noctuid moth has only two auditory neurons, A1 and A2, which function in detecting predatory bats. However, the noctuid's ears are located on the thorax behind the wings. Therefore, as these moths need to hear during flight, it was hypothesized that wing position may affect their hearing. The wing was fixed in three different positions: up, flat and down. An additional subset of animals was measured with freely moving wings. In order to negate any possible acoustic shadowing or diffractive effects, all wings were snipped, leaving the proximal-most portion and the wing hinge inta

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in healthy companion animals living in nursing homes and in the community.

BACKGROUND: Animals could be reservoirs of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) strains, but epidemiologic data on ESBL-producing bacteria in healthy pets are missing. We determined the prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in pets living in nursing homes and in households to investigate the potential role of companion animals as carriers of ESBL. METHODS: Three hundred seventy-six rectal swabs were taken from cats and dogs visiting or living in 68 randomly selected nursing homes or brought to 26 veterinary practices in Switzerland for routine mandatory vaccination. Isolates were i

Decompensation of cardiac hypertrophy: cellular mechanisms and novel therapeutic targets.

Orientation, the spatial organization of animal behavior, is an essential faculty of animals. Bacteria and lower animals such as insects exhibit taxis, innate orientation behavior, directly toward or away from a directional cue. Organisms can also orient themselves at a specific angle relative to the cues. In this study, using Drosophila as a model system, we established a visual orientation conditioning paradigm based on a flight simulator in which a stationary flying fly could control the rotation of a visual object. By coupling aversive heat shocks to a fly's orientation toward one side of

Screening and identification of differential metabolites in serum and urine of bamaxiang pigs bitten by trimeresurus stejnegeri based on UPLC-Q-TOF/MS metabolomics technology.

Trimeresurus stejnegeri is one of the top ten venomous snakes in China, and its bite causes acute and severe diseases. Elucidating the metabolic changes of the body caused by Trimeresurus stejnegeri bite will be beneficial to the diagnosis and treatment of snakebite. Thus, an animal pig model of Trimeresurus stejnegeri bite was established, and then the metabolites of serum and urine were subsequently screened and identified in both ESI+ and ESI- modes identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) methods. A minimally invasive animal model of atherosclerosis and neointimal hyperplasia for translational research.

BACKGROUND: A variety of animal models has been developed for research on atherosclerosis and neointimal hyperplasia. While small animal models contain limits for translational research, we aimed to develop an atherosclerosis model with lumen-narrowing plaques to foster basic research in vascular biology, the development of new angioplasty devices, and vessel wall imaging approaches. METHODS: Endothelial denudation was performed via a minimally invasive approach through the auricular artery, followed by stent-retriever mediated endothelial injury in New Zealand White rabbits (n = 10). A little goes a long way: Weak vaccine transmission facilitates oral vaccination campaigns against zoonotic pathogens.

Zoonotic pathogens such as Ebola and rabies pose a major health risk to humans. One proven approach to minimizing the impact of a pathogen relies on reducing its prevalence within animal reservoir populations using mass vaccination. However, two major challenges remain for vaccination programs that target free-ranging animal populations. First, limited or challenging access to wild hosts, and second, expenses associated with purchasing and distributing the vaccine. Together, these challenges constrain a campaign's ability to maintain adequate levels of immunity in the host population for an ex

Heart Rate Supports Accelerometry as a Reliable Predictor of Energy Expenditure in Bats.

Measuring the energetic cost of behavior is essential for understanding decision-making in wild animals. This is particularly true for bats where life near their energetic ceiling has resulted in a diversity of behaviors to compensate for social and environmental unpredictability. While GPS and tri-axial accelerometry has improved movement-based estimates of energy expenditure in the field, complex flight kinematics in bats may violate key assumptions accelerometry-based estimates rely on. To test whether energy expenditure is predicted by acceleration-based movement in bats, we deployed heart

Optimal pollen stickiness to pollinators for maximizing paternal fitness: Increased number of recipient flowers or increased pollen deposition on recipient flowers?

A plant can sire more seeds by increasing the number of pollen recipient flowers or the amount of pollen deposited on recipient flowers. We theoretically analyzed how pollen stickiness contributes to paternal fitness through changing the pattern of pollen dispersal including both the number of recipient flowers and overall pollen deposition (the overall amount of pollen deposited on recipient flowers) in animal-pollinated plants. We developed a numerical model in which pollen stickiness to pollinators increases with production of expensive materials on pollen surfaces, and a high level of stic

Impact of Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV) on a heterologous tsetse fly host, Glossina fuscipes fuscipes.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are the vectors of African trypanosomosis, the causal agent of sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in animals. Glossina fuscipes fuscipes is one of the most important tsetse vectors of sleeping sickness, particularly in Central Africa. Due to the development of resistance of the trypanosomes to the commonly used trypanocidal drugs and the lack of effective vaccines, vector control approaches remain the most effective strategies for sustainable management of those diseases. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an effective, environment-friendl

Correcting magnesium deficiencies may prolong life.

The International Space Station provides an extraordinary facility to study the accelerated aging process in microgravity, which could be triggered by significant reductions in magnesium (Mg) ion levels with, in turn, elevations of catecholamines and vicious cycles between the two. With space flight there are significant reductions of serum Mg (P < 0.0001) that have been shown in large studies of astronauts and cosmonauts. The loss of the functional capacity of the cardiovascular system with space flight is over ten times faster than the course of aging on Earth. Mg is an antioxidant and calci

Adaptation to exercise-induced stress is not dependent on cardiomyocyte α1A-adrenergic receptors.

The 'fight or flight' response to physiological stress involves sympathetic nervous system activation, catecholamine release and adrenergic receptor stimulation. In the heart, this induces positive inotropy, previously attributed to the β1-adrenergic receptor subtype. However, the role of the α1A-adrenergic receptor, which has been suggested to be protective in cardiac pathology, has not been investigated in the setting of physiological stress. To explore this, we developed a tamoxifen-inducible, cardiomyocyte-specific α1A-adrenergic receptor knock-down mouse model, challenged mice to four wee

Delfly Flex: a flapping wing micro air vehicle with a bio-inspired unibody composed of compliant joints.

Flying insects' thorax houses the flight muscles that provide efficient, multi-axis wing actuation. Such bio-inspiration is essential for developing future flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) that combine advanced maneuverability with design simplicity, low weight, and high power efficiency. In this work, we propose a novel unibody with distributed compliant joints inspired by the multiple degrees of actuation freedom of an insect thorax-in particular, wing stroke plane modulation for active pitch and yaw-yielding a compact multifunctional structural component for the 24.6 g FWMAV:Delfly

In-flight brainstem responses highlight the encoding of self-emitted echolocation calls in bats.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory processing to navigate and forage in complete darkness. A critical aspect of this behaviour is the neural encoding of self-generated vocalizations, which allows for accurate comparison with returning echoes. In this study, we introduce a non-invasive method for recording auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in awake, flying big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus). Using a custom 3D-printed harness that enables sustained in-place flight, we simultaneously recorded electroencephalographic and acoustic signals from freely vocalizing animals. Self-emitted echolo

Stability and agility trade-offs in spring-wing systems.

Flying insects are thought to achieve energy-efficient flapping flight by storing and releasing elastic energy in their muscles, tendons, and thorax. However, 'spring-wing' flight systems consisting of elastic elements coupled to nonlinear, unsteady aerodynamic forces present possible challenges to generating stable and responsive wing motion. The energetic efficiency from resonance in insect flight is tied to the Weis-Fogh number (N), which is the ratio of peak inertial force to aerodynamic force. In this paper, we present experiments and modeling to study how resonance efficiency (which incr

Seminal fluid compromises visual perception in honeybee queens reducing their survival during additional mating flights.

Queens of social insects make all mate-choice decisions on a single day, except in honeybees whose queens can conduct mating flights for several days even when already inseminated by a number of drones. Honeybees therefore appear to have a unique, evolutionarily derived form of sexual conflict: a queen's decision to pursue risky additional mating flights is driven by later-life fitness gains from genetically more diverse worker-offspring but reduces paternity shares of the drones she already mated with. We used artificial insemination, RNA-sequencing and electroretinography to show that semina

Electroantennogram and behavioral responses of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) females to chemicals found in human skin emanations.

The southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae), is closely associated with humans and is a vector of filariasis. Use of semiochemicals for control of mosquitoes is a novel and potentially ecofriendly control approach. Human skin emanations are known to attract mosquitoes. In the current study, olfactory and behavioral responses of host-seeking female Cx. quinquefasciatus to various chemical components of human skin emanations (carboxylic acids, alcohols, and aldehydes) were evaluated separately at three doses (0.01, 0.1, and 1 microg) for electroantennogram (EAG)
