Reproductive physiology of free-living White Ibises (Eudocimus albus) in the Florida Everglades.

We measured plasma concentrations of testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and corticosterone; and recorded changes in gonad size, body condition, molt, and brood patch development of free-living adult White Ibises (Eudocimus albus) during the breeding season in the Florida Everglades. White Ibises are colonially breeding, long-legged wading birds that inhabit freshwater and estuarine wetlands. They have flexible breeding schedules (nest initiation dates can range from January to September) and onset of nesting is usually associated with increased prey availability caused by concentration of …

A screening level probabilistic risk assessment of mercury in Florida Everglades food webs.

A screening level probabilistic assessment of risks was performed on three species of piscivorous wildlife at the top of Everglades aquatic food webs: the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), the great egret (Egretta alba), and the raccoon (Procyon lotor varius). Ranges of dietary exposure concentrations (and probability distribution functions) were derived for two general areas of the Everglades: Shark Slough and the southcentral Everglades (highly contaminated with Hg), and the northern Everglades (a lower Hg contaminated area in and near Water Conservation Area 1). Ranges of tox

Calf and disease factors affecting growth in female Holstein calves in Florida, USA.

A prospective cohort study was undertaken to determine calf-level factors that affect performance (growth) between birth and 14 months of age in a convenience sample of approximately 3300 female Holstein calves born in 1991 on two large Florida dairy farms. Data collected on each calf at birth included farm of origin, birth date, weight, height at the pelvis, and serum total protein (a measure of colostral immunoglobulin absorption). Birth season was dichotomized into summer and winter using meteorological data collected by University of Florida Agricultural Research Stations. Data collected a…

Joint Impacts of Ambient Air Pollution and Temperature on Cardiovascular Disease in West Florida.

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperature and fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) are well-established contributors of acute cardiovascular events, but their joint short-term effects in subtropical coastal regions have not been well characterized. We evaluated their joint associations with major cardiovascular outcomes in West Florida. METHODS: We analyzed daily hospital admissions for myocardial infarction, heart failure, and stroke within the BayCare Health System from 2017 to 2024. Daily mean temperature and PM2.5 were obtained from national monitoring networks. Join…

Blood bank preparedness for hurricanes and flooding: A Florida Blood Center's experiences and perspectives.

Hurricanes and flooding pose serious challenges to the stability of the blood supply, particularly in vulnerable regions such as Florida. We aimed to describe and evaluate the preparedness, response and recovery strategies of a large blood centre over the past decade, with a focus on Hurricane Irma (2017). Drawing on the centre's Business Continuity Plan, after-event reports and disaster response data, we examined how operations were disrupted and how the blood supply was maintained under extreme conditions. Combined, these storms resulted in tens of millions of dollars in losses through cance…

Combined effect of heat and outdoor O3 pollution on emergency department visits in Florida.

Short-term exposure to air pollution and heat can independently or jointly increase health risks, but national or regional health estimates may not accurately apply to local areas due to differences in pollution, climate, and population adaptation. This study focused on the state of Florida in the US, aiming to estimate the individual and interactive effects of ozone (O3) and Heat on localized human health outcomes. We applied time-series generalized additive models to estimate the effects of heat index (HI) and O3 on emergency department visits (ED) for all causes (n = 79378186) and category-…

Ethnic differences in pain, function, and catastrophizing in South Florida adults with knee osteoarthritis.

ObjectiveEthnicity is associated with varying reporting of pain, coping mechanisms, and disease severity in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, few studies have evaluated its importance in ethnicity, particularly the Hispanic population. This study compares pain intensity (VAS), function (WOMAC), and pain catastrophizing (PCS) between Hispanic (HP) and non-Hispanic White patients (NHWP) stratified by socio-economic status (SES) and osteoarthritis radiographic K-L grade.MethodsA cross-sectional study of patients from a tertiary care clinic between July 2021 and December 2022 was p

From Emergence to Evolution: Dynamics of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant in Florida.

The continual evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has significantly influenced the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the emergence of highly transmissible and immune-evasive variants posing persistent challenges. The Omicron variant, first identified in November 2021, rapidly replaced the Delta variant, becoming the predominant strain worldwide. In Florida, Omicron was first detected in December 2021, leading to an unprecedented surge in cases that surpassed all prior waves, despite extensive vaccination efforts. This study investigates the molecular evolution and transmission dynamics of the…

A Habitat Model for Disease Vector Aedes aegypti in the Tampa Bay Area, FloridA.

Within the contiguous USA, Florida is unique in having tropical and subtropical climates, a great abundance and diversity of mosquito vectors, and high rates of human travel. These factors contribute to the state being the national ground zero for exotic mosquito-borne diseases, as evidenced by local transmission of viruses spread by Aedes aegypti, including outbreaks of dengue in 2022 and Zika in 2016. Because of limited treatment options, integrated vector management is a key part of mitigating these arboviruses. Practical knowledge of when and where mosquito populations of interest exist is…

GENOTYPE IDENTIFICATION OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN MACROPODS FROM A ZOOLOGICAL PARK IN FLORIDA, USA.

There are limited reports of the genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii infecting captive macropods in North America. A novel genotype, ToxoDB PCR-RFLP genotype 263, was reported from six wallabies at a zoological facility in Virginia, USA, prompting an investigation into the genotypes from T. gondii strains infecting macropods at a zoological park in Florida, USA. Added Cost and Time Spent by Patients With History of Abuse in Florida Emergency Departments.

Interpersonal violence is known to lead to both short- and long-term health effects. Victims of sexual abuse tend to have higher healthcare costs and higher rates of physical and mental health issues than nonvictims. In this study, we investigate whether the comorbidity of mental illness and a personal history of adult physical and sexual abuse (HAPSA) results in higher healthcare costs and length of emergency department (ED) stay among Florida residents. A Negative Binomial and Log-Linear Regression Analysis suggest increased ED visit duration for those with a history of abuse, Hispanics, the…

A 2009 Mobile Source Carbon Dioxide Emissions Inventory for the University of Central Florida.

UNLABELLED: A mobile source carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions inventory for the University of Central Florida (UCF) has been completed. Fora large urban university, more than 50% of the CO2 emissions can come from mobile sources, and the vast majority of mobile source emissions come from on-road sources: personal vehicles and campus shuttles carrying students, faculty, staff and administrators to and from the university as well as on university business trips. In addition to emissions from on-road vehicles, emissions from airplane-based business travel are significant, along with emissions from n…

Outbreak of giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis associated with a neighborhood interactive water fountain--Florida, 2006.

An outbreak of giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis was identified in central Florida in September 2006. Environmental and epidemiological investigations indicated the likely source was a neighborhood interactive water fountain in a large upscale urban neighborhood. Forty-nine cases meeting the case definition were identified, of which 38 were giardiasis, nine were cryptosporidiosis, and two were co-infections. The median age of those affected was four years old, and 32 (65.3%) cases were male. This outbreak and other similar occurrences highlight the need to design and implement more stringent di…

Effects of the agricultural pesticides atrazine, chlorothalonil, and endosulfan on South Florida microbial assemblages.

One of the most impacted watersheds in the US in terms of pesticide usage is South Florida, which drains through a series of canals into the Florida Everglades and Florida Bay. Single species responses to pesticide exposure are well documented; however, little is known about community level responses to pesticides, especially at lower trophic levels. Microbial assemblages at two sites along the C-111 canal in the Dade County agricultural area in October 1999 (wet season, limited pesticide application) and in February 2000 (dry season, heavy pesticide application) were colonized onto artificial…
