FDG-PET in the diagnosis of complex partial status epilepticus originating from the frontal lobe.

Complex partial status epilepticus of frontal origin can manifest as nonconvulsive behavioral symptoms that mimic psychiatric illness and, thus, may elude timely diagnosis. The diagnosis can be further delayed by absence of ictal activity on scalp electroencephalography when the ictal origin is orbitofrontal or mesial frontal. We describe the case of a 51-year-old woman with clinically subtle complex partial status epilepticus of left orbitofrontal origin, lacking any clear ictal pattern on the electroencephalogram, who was finally diagnosed using positron emission tomography with [(18)F]fluor

18F-FDG-PET imaging of a benign neurofibroma masquerading as metastatic oesophageal carcinoma.

We present the case of a 65-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma of the thoracic oesophagus on a background of neurofibromatosis type 1. On computed tomography, he was noted to have a large left-sided superior mediastinal mass. Initially, this mass was thought to be metastatic lymphadenopathy; however, it did not display fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography. Subsequent biopsy confirmed the mass to be a neurofibroma and the patient commenced definitive chemo-radiation. Positron emission tomography had a major impact on management since the presumed lymph node disease

Wegener's granulomatosis detected initially by integrated 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography.

Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment of Wegener's granulomatosis, although this disease shows only atypical symptoms in the primary stage. This report describes a patient suspected of having a malignancy based on integrated 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), which showed increased uptake in pulmonary nodules and nasopharyngeal mucosa. Integrated PET/CT is therefore considered to be useful to confirm the distribution and determine the optimal site for biopsy.

[Usefulness of fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography in a case of pleural sarcoidosis].

BACKGROUND: Pleural sarcoidosis is not a rare disease, and some patients with sarcoidosis experience chest pain, although the cause is often unknown. Various studies have indicated that fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is useful for diagnosing and monitoring sarcoidosis. CASE: A 62-year-old man noted left-side dominant chest and back pain, although chest computed tomography (CT) revealed no abnormalities. Two months later, chest and back pain rapidly increased in severity and blurred vision appeared. In addition to uveitis, renal dysfunction was observed and chest CT

Neurosyphilitic gumma on F18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography: an old disease investigated with a new technology.

Neurosyphilitic gumma is a slowly progressive inflammatory manifestation of tertiary syphilis. It is characterised by chronic granulomata that ranges from microscopic lesions to large tumour-like masses. While cutaneous, mucosal and skeletal gummatous lesions are not uncommon, neurosyphilitic gumma is rare. F18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) has been used effectively to assess the metabolic nature of brain masses, in particular in guiding biopsy and grading gliomas. However, the inflammatory nature of lesions such as neurosyphilitic gumma poses challenges t

Impact of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography before and after definitive radiation therapy in patients with apparently solitary plasmacytoma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) on management of patients with apparently isolated plasmacytoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-one patients with apparently solitary plasmacytoma who underwent FDG-PET for staging or restaging were identified from a central PET database. They were either candidates for or had received definitive radiation therapy (RT). RESULTS: Seventeen patients had initial staging scans for bone (n = 11) or soft tissue (n = 6) plasmacytomas, and 11 had PET scans after RT. Only 1 of 14 known untreated sites of

[18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography imaging in a case of relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystemic disease that is characterized by recurrent inflammation of the cartilaginous structures of the external ear, nose, joint, larynx, and tracheobronchial tree. Airway involvement is present in up to 50% of patients with the disease and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We describe a patient with relapsing polychondritis presenting with tracheal and bronchial abnormalities that were identified by an increased uptake on [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

Position of nuclear medicine modalities in the diagnostic workup of cancer patients: lung cancer.

This review summarizes the current literature and tries to define the status of nuclear medicine in the clinical workup of lung cancer patients. Nuclear medicine procedures and positron emission tomography (PET) with the EMEA-approved radiopharmaceutical fluorodeo-xyglucose (FDG) are indicated for the characterization of lung lesions; the nodal staging of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); the detection of distant metastases; and for the diagnosis of recurrent disease. Recent studies have shown the clinical efficacy of nuclear medicine and especially of FDG-PET in the workup of lung cancer pa

Dynamic evaluation of 18F-FDG uptake by microPET and whole-body autoradiography in a fibrosarcoma-bearing mouse model.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fluorine-18-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) has been used in the clinic as a diagnostic radiotracer for monitoring many kinds of tumors, but its value for monitoring fibrosarcoma is not well established. METHODS: In this study, the uptake of 18F-FDG in a fibrosarcoma-bearing mouse model was evaluated using the high resolution positron emission tomography (PET) system microPET. Tumor cells were implanted in 3 FVB/N mice, and static microPET scanning was performed on day 1, 7, 12 and 15 after implantation. A dynamic microPET image was scanned on day 12 to determine the 18F-F

Nuclear medicine advances in breast cancer imaging.

Primary breast cancer imaging can be done by various means. Mammography is the most widely used technique because of its excellent diagnostic performance, patient compliance, and cost-effectiveness ratio. Other radiological techniques (such as ultrasonography) are indicated in particular circumstances, while some (such as digital mammography and magnetic resonance imaging) seem very promising but are still under evaluation. The recent technological progress in nuclear medicine has resulted in the availability of two diagnostic procedures that have been validated by extensive international clin

Cerebral glucose metabolism measured by positron emission tomography in term newborn infants with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

Total and regional cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRgl) was measured by positron emission tomography with 2-((18)F) fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ((18)FDG) in 20 term infants with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) after perinatal asphyxia. All infants had signs of perinatal distress, and 15 were severely acidotic at birth. Six infants developed mild HIE, twelve moderate HIE, and two severe HIE during their first days of life. The positron emission tomographic scans were performed at 4-24 d of age (median, 11 d). One hour before scanning, 2-3.7 MBq/kg (54-100 microCi/kg) (18)FDG was injected i.v.

[Evaluation of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose whole body positron emission tomography imaging in the clinical diagnosis of lung cancer].

In recent years the use of positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) has become a valuable tool in the detection of a variety of tumors including lung cancer. To determine its role in the diagnosis of patients with suspected lung cancer, we compared the results of FDG-PET with those of the other scintigraphic imaging techniques (67Ga-planar image, 201Tl-SPECT and 99mTc-bone scintigraphy) used worldwide in patients with lung cancer. The analysis group consists of 178 patients, 159 malignant pulmonary diseases and 19 benign pulmonary diseases. FDG-PET was perfo

[Positron emission tomography for detection of lymph node metastases in lung cancer].

Although radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging are still the methods of choice for the study of lung cancer, they have certain limitations in the evaluation of mediastinal lymph node metastases. Positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) has recently emerged as a practical and useful imaging modality in patients with lung cancer. We evaluated the usefulness of FDG-PET in the detection of mediastinal lymph node metastases and then compared the findings with the results of CT by region based on the histological diagnosis. For FDG-PE

Dynamic changes in glucose metabolism induced by thiamine deficiency and its replenishment as revealed by a positron autoradiography technique using rat living brain slices.

Dynamic changes in the cerebral glucose metabolic rate (CMRglc) before and after thiamine replenishment were investigated in living brain slices obtained from pyrithiamine-treated (PT) and pair-fed control rats by use of a positron autoradiography technique. Fresh rat brain slices (300 microm thick) were incubated with [18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) in oxygenated Krebs-Ringer solution at 36 degrees C, during which serial two-dimensional images of [18F]FDG uptake in the slices were constructed on the imaging plates. The net influx constant (=K) of [18F]FDG was determined by a Patlak
