BACKGROUND: Intake of supplements containing iron or a combination of iron and folic acid by pregnant women may improve maternal health and pregnancy outcomes. Recently, intermittent supplementation regimens have been proposed as alternatives to daily regimens.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of daily and intermittent use of iron or iron+folic acid supplements by pregnant women.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (March 2009) and contacted relevant organisations for the identification of ongoing and unpublished studie

Folic acid and folate receptors (FOLRs) play an important role in the downregulation of homocysteine (Hcy), a risk factor of Alzheimer's disease, thrombosis, neuropsychiatric illness and fractures. While several studies have reported that FOLR1 and FOLR2 import folic acid into cells, the role of FOLR3 remains unknown. In this study, we evaluated the impact of FOLR3 on the metabolism of Hcy alongside its protective effect against homocysteine-induced neurotoxicity. To reveal the role of FOLR3, we constructed FOLR3-overexpressed HEK293 cells (FOLR3+ cells) and evaluated cell growth, folic acid i

One of the most remarkable successes of epidemiology was the demonstration in the late twentieth century that spina bifida and anencephaly-two of the most common and severe birth defects-are caused primarily by folate deficiency. This article reviews the descriptive epidemiological studies that began when we did not have a clue about etiology. The paper tells the success story of the trials that proved that folic acid would prevent folic-acid-preventable spina bifida. Finally, it will tell how difficult it is to get prevention policy implemented, even when the scientific evidence is compelling

BACKGROUND: The exact aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is still unknown, but different predisposing factors, including iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies, have been proposed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum iron, ferritin, folic acid and vitamin B12 levels were investigated in 35 patients with RAS and in 26 healthy controls.
RESULTS: Vitamin B12 levels were found significantly lower in subjects with RAS than in controls. No significant differences were found in other parameters.
CONCLUSION: We concluded that vitamin B 12 deficiency may be an aetiological factor in rec

Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and death globally, with a rising incidence in younger age groups. It is well known that maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation is vital for the early neurodevelopment of offspring. One-carbon (1C) metabolism, including folic acid and choline, plays a vital role in closure of the neural tube in utero. However, the impact of maternal dietary deficiencies in 1C on offspring neurological function following ischemic stroke later in life remains undefined. The aim of this study was to investigate inflammation in the blood and brain ti

Malabsorption occurs frequently in chronic alcoholics. Alcoholics may malabsorb fat, nitrogen, sodium, water, thiamine, folic acid, vitamin B12 and D-xylose. Malabsorption is due to an abnormal luminal phase of digestion as well as a diffuse functional mucosal abnormality. Malabsorption may, therefore, contribute to clinically significant malnutrition, diarrhoea, folate-deficiency and to abnormalities in tests of xylose and vitamin B12 absorption. Factors producing malabsorption in alcoholics include dietary folic acid and protein deficiency, pancreatic insufficiency, abnormalities of biliary

The bone marrow status of 31 consecutive pregnant women who had been on supplemental oral iron and folic acid since early pregnancy at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was assessed later in pregnancy to test the efficacy of oral iron and folic acid in preventing iron deficiency and/or megaloblastic anaemia in our community. Only those pregnant patients with haemoglobin genotype AA or AS took part in the study. Nobody was excluded except those with CC or SC. 96.77% (30 out of 31 patients) had iron deficiency with no stainable iron in the bone marrow. 35.4% (11 out of 31 patients) had m

OBJECTIVE: To provide information regarding the use of folic acid for the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) and other congenital anomalies, in order that physicians, midwives, nurses, and other health-care workers can assist in the education of women in the preconception phase of their health care. OPTION: Folic acid supplementation is problematic, since 50% of pregnancies are unplanned and the health status of women may not be optimal.
OUTCOMES: Folic acid supplementation has been proven to decrease or minimize specific birth defects.
EVIDENCE: A systematic review of the literature,

Women of childbearing age are advised to consume folic acid-containing supplements. Whether this remains necessary after folic acid fortification of the food supply in North America has yet to be determined. The objectives of this study were to assess folate intakes and the contribution of folic acid to the diets of women of childbearing age in the post-folic acid fortification era. Using a cross-sectional study design, fasting blood samples were obtained from 95 women (aged 18 to 25 years), and the samples were analyzed for serum and red blood cell folate, as well for total homocysteine. Diet

Homocysteine is an amino acid which plays several important roles in human physiology and is an important biomarker for possible deficiencies of various vitamins (vitamin B₆ and B₁₂, folic acid). In this work GC-MS method was used to determine the levels of homocysteine in the urine of autistic and healthy children. The levels of homocysteine in urine samples from 34 autistic and 21 healthy children were 2.36 ± 1.24 and 0.76 ± 0.31 (mmol∙mol⁻¹ creatinine), respectively. The higher level of homocysteine in autistic children may indicate deficiencies of folic acid and vitamins B₆ and B₁₂ in nutr

UNLABELLED: Paediatricians need to be aware of the broad implications that sufficient maternal folic acid intake has on the wellbeing of the embryo and fetus. There is now strong evidence that adequate periconceptional maternal folic acid supplementation during critical periods of organ formation is associated with reduction in both the occurrence and recurrence of neural tube defects, congenital heart defects (particularly conotruncal heart defects), obstructive urinary tract anomalies, limb deficiencies, orofacial clefts and congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Inadequate maternal folic

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of vitamin B(12) or folate causes megaloblastic anemia (MA). The disease presents with pancytopenia due to the excessive cellular apoptosis of hematopoietic progenitor. MA is characterized by the presence of high mean corpuscular volume in the blood routine test and hyperlobulation nuclei of the granulocytes in the peripheral blood smears, and megaloblasts in the bone marrow.
METHODS: We report a rare case, in which megaloblastic anemia was masked by an unrecognized hemoglobinopathy and presented with normocytic anemia and atypical morphological features of bone marrow.

Folate is a micronutrient required for the production of new cells, making it a key factor in early fetal development and ensuring normal growth and maintenance of health. The increase in consumption of folate due to increased periconceptional supplementation and fortification of grains in many countries has led to a decrease in occurrence of folate deficiency and a class of birth defects called neural tube defects. However, an opportunity remains to further improve folate status of populations in areas with limited access to fortified foods and supplementation. Screening of women of reproduct

BACKGROUND: The prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) is now an issue of major public health concern. Myelomeningocele, the most common NTD, often results in severe disabilities and may be life threatening. In Africa, there is little awareness of the NTDs, and most African countries lag behind in the global efforts at preventing them.
PURPOSE: Following a review of global literature, we discuss the burden of myelomeningocele on the society and the current state of its prevention with an emphasis on Africa within the global context. The realization that folate supplementation reduces the oc

Blood folate concentration is decreased by tobacco smoking and presumably secondhand smoke. Because low folate concentration is associated with hyperhomocysteinemia, both are emerging as important and independent risk factors for atherosclerosis as well as prediction of early coronary artery disease. The primary cause of low folate concentration in smokers might be related to lifestyle and dietary habits. Smokers tend to consume fewer folate-rich fruits and vegetables vs non-smokers. Adverse cardiovascular health is generally attributed to toxic gases, particulates, and tars generated from tob

The anemia observed in patients with partial gastric resection results from a complex interrelationship of deficiencies of these three important hematemics-iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid. Reliance upon morphological evidence of anemia in the peripheral blood smear may be difficult and confusing since deficiency of one hematemic may mask the coexisting deficiency of another. It is common for deficiencies of more than one hematemic to occur in these patients. A number of studies have demonstrated the masking effect of iron deficiency on concurrent vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency. In addi…
