Food insecurity versus public health? Social resilience.

The health problems of low-income communities and their relationship to food insecurity are a widespread problem worldwide. Understanding the complex relationship between these two conditions of food insecurity and health outcomes is the focus of this study. In addressing these issues, managing food security and adopting comprehensive strategies that consider the broader public health of the poor and socially vulnerable requires a multi-pronged approach that integrates sustainable food systems, social protection interventions, community engagement, and nutrition-specific interventions. This st…

"We have a roof over our head, but we have to eat too:" Exploring shifting foodscapes from homelessness into Housing First in Kingston, Ontario.

BACKGROUND: People facing extended periods of homelessness exhibit a remarkable degree of agency and resilience in procuring food. The literature on foodscapes considers the sociospatial contexts of food procurement, finding that what happens within and along the way to sites of food acquisition and consumption are important considerations in fully understanding and realizing food security. PURPOSE: This study explores the shift in foodscapes of people who are transitioning from homelessness into scattered-site independent housing via a municipal Housing First program and considers implicatio…

Rice and heavy metals: A review of cadmium impact and potential remediation techniques.

In recent decades, the menace of heavy metals to food security and human health has become a serious concern. Given its status as the primary provider of food globally, significant research has been done to ensure the safe cultivation of rice, particularly concerning the mitigation of heavy metal contamination. Therefore, this article focuses on the effects and poisoning mechanism of heavy metals, primarily cadmium, on rice. Here, we have discussed the absorption, translocation, and toxicity mechanism of cadmium in rice and the external factors, such as soil pH, organic matter, microorganisms,…

Child-specific food insecurity and overweight are not associated in a sample of 10- to 15-year-old low-income youth.

In the United States, 17% of children and adolescents are overweight and 20% live in a food insecure household. Previous studies examining the association between household food insecurity and overweight among children have been inconclusive but are limited insofar as they did not assess child-specific measures of food insecurity and overweight. In response, this study examined the association between food insecurity and child overweight status when these variables were measured for the same child using information on children (n = 1031) aged 10-15 y from the Three-City Study. Approximately 8%

Interdependence of rural household welfare measurement in the context of climate variability in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian government and various stakeholders have made significant efforts to improve household consumption, poverty, and food security. However, the results have not met expectations. To ensure that programs are effective, it is critical to have a robust measure of well-being that considers social, economic, institutional and environmental challenges. Previous studies on welfare have focused on a single measurement, but it is important to recognize the interdependence between various well-being indicators to formulate comprehensive interventions and initiatives for rural households in th…

Newcastle disease vaccine adoption by smallholder households in Tanzania: Identifying determinants and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Food security is critical to achieving sustainable growth, poverty reduction, and political and economic stability. Livestock have the potential to improve the food security of smallholder households in developing countries, but livestock productivity is constrained by disease. The extent to which households adopt innovations such as vaccines impacts disease control; however, the behavioral and economic drivers underlying household decisions to adopt or forgo vaccination are not well understood. We address this gap with a study of adoption of Newcastle disease (ND) vaccines by chic…
