Syphilis is a worldwide sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Its association with other STIs, including HIV, demands early diagnosis and immediate treatment of patients. We herein report an unusual serpiginous form of secondary syphilis.

Two cases of palmoplantar lichen planus with various clinical features. Palmoplantar lichen planus is a rare, localized variant of lichen planus. Although several clinical features of palmoplantar lichen planus may be seen, the erythematous scaly form is most common. We present two cases of palmoplantar lichen planus that show vesicle-like and petechia-like features, which are uncommon variants of palmoplantar lichen planus.

BACKGROUND: Necrolytic acral erythema (NAE) is a distinct skin entity and is strongly associated with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Recent progress in the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of onychomycosis is summarized. The risk factors of this condition were investigated, and the results of analyses of the systemic state of patients, shape of nails, blood circulation around nails, nail growth rate and causative fungi were reported. Cases of onychomycosis diagnosed by mycological examination in three mycology units (Florence, Siena and Milan) of central and northern Italy over the 15-year period, 1985-2000, were studied retrospectively. The number of cases was 4046 (1952 women, 2094 men). Dermatophytes were isolated in 2859, yeasts in 655 and moulds in 532 cases. The most frequent dermatophyte was Trichophyton rubrum (87%), followed by T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (10%). Candida albicans (93.2%) was the prevalent yeast. Twenty-two adults with persistent, symptomatic viral warts on the hands or feet which had failed to respond to conventional therapy were treated by carbon dioxide (CO2) laser ablation under local anaesthesia. Four patients did not return for follow-up treatment. Of the remaining 18 patients, 12 had plantar warts, the other six had warts on the hands that were mainly periungual. Palmoplantar pustules may rarely be associated with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis in children and young adults. Additional features of this disorder are recurrent low-grade fevers and bone pain. Skeletal radiographs and bone films suggest osteomyelitis, but bone cultures yield no growth of organisms. The cause of this disorder is unknown, and treatment remains unsatisfactory.

Titres of anti-stratum corneum (SC) antibodies, determined by an indirect immunofluorescence (IF) technique, were significantly higher on average in pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) and pompholyx than in normal controls. By a complement IF technique, the antibodies fixed complement (C3) in high titer in PPP, but to a much lesser degree in pompholyx and normal controls.
