[Biliary stent as a cause of bowel obstruction].

Biliary stents are widely used as an alternative treatment for benign biliary obstruction, choledocholithiasis, biliary fistulas or leak from the cystic duct after cholecystectomy. They occupy a special position in the palliative treatment of malignant biliary strictures. Like any other treatment method, this one also has its complications. Most often it is the development of stent obstruction and jaundice or cholangitis. Less common complications include proximal or distal biliary stent migration. The authors describe a case study of one of the possible complications of migrated biliary stent

Scrotal migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt: a case report and review of literature.

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion may be associated with migration into the abdominal wall, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, vagina, scrotum, and mediastinum. Migration of the VP shunt into the scrotum has been rarely reported. We present a 1 year old boy with cerebrospinal fluid hydrocele due to the migration of a VP shunt catheter into the right side scrotum.

Removal of a migrated dental implant from the maxillary sinus after 7 years: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The accidental displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is an infrequent but possible complication in dental clinical practice. The main cause of implant displacement is the inadequate bone height in the posterior maxilla. This event usually occurs during surgery, and it is more rarely reported in the post-operative period, especially with long-term follow-ups. CASE REPORT: Here, a case of an implant migrated inside the maxillary sinus at the time of abutment connection and removed 7 years later is described. DISCUSSION: Postoperative recovery was uneventful. To t

[Intrauterine device migration to the bladder: four case reports].

The intrauterine device has been commonly used in our population for many years as contraceptive method. One of the complications is the device migration out of the uterus. One of the most uncommon fait of this migration is the bladder, with few reports on the literature. In this work, four cases are reported with their clinical presentation, study and treatment.

Peritoneal shunt tube migration into the stomach--case report--.

A 47-year-old man presented with repeated headache and feverishness 3.5 years after undergoing ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery for normal pressure hydrocephalus secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage. Abdominal computed tomography revealed that the peritoneal catheter was encased by fibrous tissue and the distal end of the catheter had migrated into the stomach. The diagnosis was spontaneous gastric perforation by the ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The fibrous tissue was expected to seal the very small gastric perforation, so the catheter was successfully extracted through a scalp incision witho

Secondary migration of a central venous catheter. A case report.

A case of central venous catheter (CVC) secondary migration in a patient with Hodgkin's lymphoma is reported. The catheter was inserted in the right internal jugular vein with anterior approach. The correct position of the catheter tip in the superior vena cava was confirmed by X-ray. Secondary migration to the right subclavian vein, without displacement at the point of insertion, was reported 8 days later by a chest X-ray performed for worsening of the respiratory condition. CVC was removed and reinserted with the same procedure. The correct position of the catheter tip was confirmed by thora

Distally migrated esophageal self-expanding metal stents: wait and see or remove?

BACKGROUND: Extraction of a migrated esophageal stent may be extremely difficult with a substantial risk of complications including esophageal perforation and hemorrhage. METHODS: Retrospectively 242 patients were evaluated who underwent implantation of self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) and 13 (5.4%) were identified with distal stent migration. In all cases of stent dislocation into the stomach, extraction of the stent was not attempted and a new stent was inserted. RESULTS: Twelve patients had dysphagia. One patient underwent surgery because of stent impaction in the colon, 3 had unrecogni

Potpourri aspiration presenting as tension pneumothorax.

Foreign body aspiration in children is a relatively common occurrence, with peanuts, seeds, or other food particles representing the most common items. Because radiological findings such as mediastinal shift, postobstructive emphysema, and pneumonia are notoriously inconsistent, diagnosis hinges on an accurate history, which may be correlated by physical examination and radiography. We present the case of a 2-year-old girl with delayed treatment of a bronchial foreign body who presented with tension pneumothorax before endoscopy. After chest tube removal, her pneumothorax recurred, thereby bri

From the neck to the lung: pneumothorax caused by a lost needle.

The case of a 29-year-old man with a left-sided pneumothorax caused by an injection needle in the lung is presented. The needle had been lost 3 months previously during an attempt to inject heroin into the left jugular vein. With axillary limited thoracotomy after attempted thoracoscopy, the needle was finally found in the left upper lobe of the lung, most probably causing the pneumothorax. At least no other pathologies of the lung were detected and, after surgery, no further pneumothorax occurred. The case is discussed in relation to similar cases described in the medical literature.

Unusual displacement of an intra-uterine contraceptive device. A case report.

Since its introduction in 1959 the plastic intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) has been accepted as a safe and convenient means of preventing conception. Nevertheless, use of the IUCD has been attended by complications, notably perforation of the uterus by the device. An unusual case of translocation of an IUCD--the device was located within the lumen of the appendix--is presented.

Anterior cervical abscess caused by migration of an ingested fish bone in a child: A case report.

Migration of an ingested fish bone beyond the esophageal wall is an exceptionally rare complication in children and may result in deep neck infections requiring urgent surgical management. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) plays a pivotal role in establishing the diagnosis and guiding treatment. A previously healthy 9-year-old boy presented with a progressively enlarging anterior cervical swelling associated with dysphagia and odynophagia 15 days after accidental fish bone ingestion. Clinical examination revealed a tender inflammatory cervical mass, while laboratory tests demonstrated

The safe removal of a superior mediastinal foreign body by mediastinoscopy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal foreign bodies might cause mediastinal organ injury or mediastinal abscess. The prompt removal surgery of mediastinal foreign bodies is needed to prevent those complications. We report a case in which a mediastinal foreign body was removed by video-mediastinoscopy. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 74-year-old man with a chief complaint of hoarseness, was referred to our department for surgical management of a wooden foreign body that had traumatically migrated into the superior mediastinum. During the surgery, the video-mediastinoscopy was introduced under the pneumom

Embryonated duck ("balut") eggshell aspiration in a one-year-old boy.

A one-year-old boy with two months' chronic cough and dysphonia, unresponsive to therapy for pneumonia, had a radiopaque, wedge-shaped tracheal foreign body noted on anteroposterior, but not lateral radiographs, and he eventually became aphonic. Laryngoscopy yielded a subglottic embryonated duck eggshell. Foreign body aspiration should be considered in the presence of chronic cough. Radiopaque airway foreign bodies may be metallic or calcific. The patient was fond of sucking soup from a partially-shelled embryonated duck egg. The last occasion occurred immediately before the onset of cough. Th

[Chorioretinopathy caused by migration of caterpillar hairs. Apropos of 2 cases].

Caterpillars cause many ocular lesions by a pathogen agent coming from their coating: the hairs. These can enter into the eye ball and migrate in the ocular tissues; a secondary inflammatory reaction to the foreign body will appear. This reaction is due to the hairs themselves as foreign body, but also partly to their contents: a liquid toxin which contains proteins, lipids and other components. The morphological configuration of the hair favours its migration in the tissues. Among the different lesions observed, chorio retinopathies are not very frequent, but their clinical aspect is quite ch
