Brain alterations in paedophilia: a critical review.

Psychosocial and biological factors have been implicated in paedophilia, such as alterations in brain structure and function. The purpose of this paper is to review the expanding body of literature on this topic including brain abnormality case reports, as well as structural and functional neuroimaging studies. Case studies of men who have committed sexual offences against children implicate frontal and temporal abnormalities that may be associated with impaired impulse inhibition. Structural neuroimaging investigations show volume reductions in paedophilic men. Although the findings have been…

Neuroimaging in Visual Snow - A Review of the Literature.

Since the first description of visual snow syndrome (VSS) in 1995, there has been increasing interest particularly within the past 5-10 years in phenotyping the condition and differentiating it from conditions such as migraine with aura and hallucinogen persisting perception disorder. Structural and functional neuroimaging has provided valuable insights in this regard, yielding functional networks and anatomical regions of interest, of which the right lingual gyrus is of particular note. Various modalities, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (P…

Neurochemical and molecular characteristics of altered brain functional activity in the anti-NMDAR encephalitis.

AIMS: Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate (Anti-NMDA) receptor encephalitis is characterized by widespread neural dysfunction, yet the underlying neurochemical and molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether functional alterations in anti-NMDAR encephalitis are spatially associated with neurotransmitter receptor distributions and transcriptomic profiles, to uncover their neurochemical, molecular, and cellular signatures. METHODS: A total of 25 patients diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this study. Al

Systematic bibliometric and visualized analysis of research hotspots and trends in obstructive sleep apnea neuroimaging.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients exhibit neurological symptoms, driving research in sleep medicine and clinical neurology. Neurologists and radiologists explore detection methods to identify unique neural features associated with OSA in the atypical nervous system. Neuroimaging research in OSA encompasses studying the structural, functional connectivity (FC), and neurometabolic aspects of the brain. Limited resources and OSA's heterogeneity pose challenges to effective neuroimaging research. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of OSA neuroimaging research to id

Identification of key hubs and aberrant connectivity patterns in depression associated with white matter hyperintensity.

BACKGROUND: There is a significant association between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and the onset of depression. This study aimed to elucidate the underlying pathological mechanism underpinning WMH-related vulnerability to depression through multimodal neuroimaging analyses of brain structural and functional network alterations. METHODS: We recruited 48 WMH patients with depressive symptoms (WMH-D), 47 WMH patients without depressive symptoms (WMH-ND), and 50 demographically matched healthy controls (HC). We first compared global functional connectivity (FC) derived from the amplitude

Imaging biomarkers in functional neurological disorders.

Recent advances in neuroimaging have significantly reshaped our understanding of functional neurological disorder (FND), shifting the focus from structural damage to dysfunctional brain networks. Building on Charcot's early intuition of a 'functional lesion', this review traces the evolution of neuroimaging research in FND, from its historical roots to current developments. We synthesize findings from structural and functional imaging studies, highlighting alterations in brain regions involved in motor control, self-agency and emotion regulation. Task-based fMRI studies have shown atypical act

Accurate neuroimaging biomarkers to predict body mass index in adolescents: a longitudinal study.

Obesity is often associated with cardiovascular complications. Adolescent obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in adulthood; thus, intensive management is warranted in adolescence. The brain state contributes to the development of obesity in addition to metabolic conditions, and hence neuroimaging is an important tool for accurately assessing an individual's risk of developing obesity. Here, we aimed to predict body mass index (BMI) progression in adolescents with neuroimaging features using machine learning approaches. From an open database, we adopted 76 resting-state function

Heterogeneity and convergence across seven neuroimaging modalities: a review of the autism spectrum disorder literature.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature classifies autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a heterogeneous, complex neurodevelopmental disorder that often is identified prior to three years of age. We aim to provide a narrative review of key structural and functional properties that differentiate the neuroimaging profile of autistic youth from their typically developing (TD) peers across different neuroimaging modalities. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by searching for key terms in PubMed, with the most recent search conducted on September 1, 2023. Original research papers were included

Neural Mechanisms of Paroxysmal Kinesigenic Dyskinesia: Insights from Neuroimaging.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is a rare movement disorder of the nervous system, and little is known about its pathogenesis. Currently, the diagnosis of PKD is primarily based on clinical manifestations, with little objective evidence. Neuroimaging has been used to explore the pathological changes in cerebral structure and function associated with PKD. The current review highlights recent advances in neuroimaging to provide a better understanding of the neural mechanisms and early diagnosis of this disorder. Several studies utilizing single-photon emission computed tomography (CT), p

The Brain Connectome after Gamma Knife Radiosurgery of the Ventro-Intermediate Nucleus for Tremor: Marseille-Lausanne Radiobiology Study Protocol.

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder. Deep brain stimulation is the current gold standard for drug-resistant tremor, followed by radiofrequency lesioning. Stereotactic radiosurgery by Gamma Knife (GK) is considered as a minimally invasive alternative. The majority of procedures aim at the same target, thalamic ventro-intermediate nucleus (Vim). The primary aim is to assess the clinical response in relationship to neuroimaging changes, both at structural and functional level. All GK treatments are uniformly performed in our center using Guiot's targeting and a radiation do

Neuroimaging in thyroid eye disease: A systematic review.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease secondary largely to hyperthyroid Graves' disease, which profoundly affects patients' visual function, appearance, and physical and mental well-being. Emerging neuroimaging studies have reported alterations in the brains of patients with TED, suggesting that the impact of this autoimmune disease may extend beyond the orbit. This systematic review aims to consolidate the neuroimaging evidence that describes the brain alterations of TED. We analyzed information from thirty-one related studies involving 1349 TED patients and 710 he

Update on neuroimaging phenotypes of mid-hindbrain malformations.

PURPOSE: Neuroimaging techniques including structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional positron emission tomography (PET) are useful in categorizing various midbrain-hindbrain (MHB) malformations, both in allowing diagnosis and in helping to understand the developmental processes that were disturbed. Brain imaging phenotypes of numerous malformations are characteristic features that help in guiding the genetic testing in case of direct neuroimaging-genotype correlation or, at least, to differentiate among MHB malformations entities. The present review aims to provide the reader

Neuroimaging and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

The detrimental effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain include structural brain anomalies as well as cognitive and behavioral deficits. Initial neuroimaging studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed previous autopsy reports of overall reduction in brain volume and central nervous system (CNS) disorganization, with specific structural abnormalities of the corpus callosum, cerebellum, caudate, and hippocampus. Advances in neuroimaging techniques have allowed detection of regional increases in cortical thickness and g

Protocol for the development of joint attention-based subclassification of autism spectrum disorder and validation using multi-modal data.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity in clinical manifestation and underlying neuro-biological mechanisms are major obstacles to providing personalized interventions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Despite various efforts to unify disparate data modalities and machine learning techniques for subclassification, replicable ASD clusters remain elusive. Our study aims to introduce a novel method, utilizing the objective behavioral biomarker of gaze patterns during joint attention, to subclassify ASD. We will assess whether behavior-based subgrouping yields clinically, genetically, and ne

Contrastive machine learning reveals the structure of neuroanatomical variation within autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly heterogeneous. Identifying systematic individual differences in neuroanatomy could inform diagnosis and personalized interventions. The challenge is that these differences are entangled with variation because of other causes: individual differences unrelated to ASD and measurement artifacts. We used contrastive deep learning to disentangle ASD-specific neuroanatomical variation from variation shared with typical control participants. ASD-specific variation correlated with individual differences in symptoms. The structure of this ASD-specific variation a
