Modular synthesis of novel biphen[n]arenes (n = 2-4) with customizable heterocycle blocks, functional skeletons, binding sites, and topological structures could be facilely achieved through the rational design and replacement of reaction modules (furan and thiophene), functional modules (substituted benzene, biphenyl, and naphthalene), and linking modules (methylene). These biphen[n]arenes were characterized by NMR, HRMS, and X-ray crystalline diffraction, complemented by DFT calculations. Their photophysical properties were thoroughly studied.

Vinylsulfonamides with a furan, carbocyclic, semicyclic or acyclic 1,3-diene moiety are synthetized via a domino elimination-amidation reaction of 2-chloroethanesulfonyl chloride. Intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of these vinylsulfonamides with thermal (toluene, 110 degrees C) or high pressure (dichloromethane, 13 kbar) activation provides efficient access to a range of gamma- and delta-sultams following a 2-3 d long synthetic procedure. Enantiopure sultams are readily obtained from N-1-phenylethyl substituted vinylsulfonamides.

One-step syntheses of 4-oxo-(E)-2-hexenal and 4-oxo-(E)-2-octenal from commercially available 2-ethyl- and 2-butylfuran are described. A two-step synthesis of the homolog 4-oxo-(E)-2-decenal from furan is also reported. These compounds are common components of true bug defensive secretions, and recently have been identified as pheromone components for several species. The simple syntheses reported here will make these compounds readily available for further research.

The title compound, C15H13NO4, is an analog of a well-known cytotoxic mol-ecule, canthardin. The compound possesses a 3/5/5/5 contiguous stereo-defined ring network, which features cyclic furan, oxirane and cyclic carboxamide moieties. The flexibility of the N-benzyl unit allows for supra-molecular chiral (but racemic) packing in the extended crystal structure. The inter-molecular inter-actions in the crystal are dominated by H⋯H and O⋯H van der Waals inter-actions, as shown by Hirshfeld analysis.
