Despite the increasing importance of cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) farming in Africa, diseases of these animals in captivity are not well known. A survey of a colony in Gabon averaging 235 cane rats over a period of 36 months allowed the observation of several suspected tumors and the confirmation of three cases of neoplasms. Within a period of 8 months, a chondroma in an adult female, a hemangiosarcoma in a subadult male, and a chondrosarcoma in an elderly female were diagnosed. This incidence (1.3%) of neoplasms in the cane rat colony in such a short period is uncommon. Neoplasms in rod…

Loiasis, caused by Loa loa, is a filarial infection endemic to Central and West Africa, increasingly recognized in non-endemic regions due to global migration and travel. Diagnosis in non-endemic regions can be challenging due to delayed symptom onset. We report a case of a 40-year-old woman presenting with ocular discomfort and a migrating subcutaneous parasite six years after residing in Gabon. Laboratory evaluation revealed eosinophilia and microfilariae on peripheral blood smear, confirming loiasis. Initial treatment with albendazole led to inflammatory symptoms, highlighting the risk of p…

Close interactions between salmonellae and Schistosoma intercalatum were demonstrated by a study of 118 children conducted at Libreville, Gabon. Bilharziasis, confirmed by rectal biopsy, was present in 76% of children hospitalized for typhoid-like salmonella septicaemia, as against 38% of controls of the same age living in the same district (P less than 0.001). Although the clinical symptoms were typical of typhoid fever, with stupor, myocarditis or leucopenia depending on the cases, the germs responsible in 26 out of 42 cases were salmonella species regarded as minor. Finally, the salmonella …

Eighty-one of 449 Gabonese female patients examined were found to be positive for genitopubic white piedra. The association with trichobacteriosis is frequent (53 cases), and mostly seen with inguinal intertrigo. Fifty-two strains belonging to the genus Trichosporon were isolated from genital hairs as well as from inguinal intertrigo lesions. These strains were identified in accordance with previously defined morphological and biochemical criteria. Three species were recognized: T. mucoides (25 strains), T. inkin (20 strains) and T. asahii (seven strains). Their macroscopic and microscopic mor…

Between 1985 and 1987, 5,070 randomly selected persons living in 6 central African countries (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon) were checked for serological evidence of haemorrhagic fever. Rural and urban areas were studied, including ecoclimatic zones ranging from dry savana to tropical rain forest. Virus-reactive antibodies were found with all antigens tested, and the global prevalence of positive sera was distributed as follows: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, 0.22%; Rift Valley fever virus, 0.18%; Ebola virus, 12.40%; Marburg virus, 0.39%…

The geographic origins of the 1,934 strongyloidiasis cases were as follows: 1,211 cases originated from the West Indies, most of whom resided in France. From 1973 to 1986 the prevalence decreased from 47 to 30% for men, and from 30% to 17% for women. 433 cases originated from other intertropical countries, 257 of which were from 4 prevalence zones of Africa: 4.5% Mauritania, Mali, Niger; 9% Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo, Zaïre; 23% Guinea, Nigeria, Congo, Cameroon; 32% Ivory Coast, Gabon. 235 cases were French who had live, fought or travelled abroad (mainly Indochina and Africa). 33 Europeans o…

Spondweni virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus previously reported to cause human disease in Southern and West Africa. A serologically confi … fever. Evidence of Spondweni virus infection was also found in two other U.S. citizens residing in Gabon and Cameroon. Spondweni virus might be a cause of acute febrile illness throughout West Africa, and its presence should be considered in the differential diagnosis of febrile illness and in antibody surveys in that region.

The spontaneous rupture of malarial spleen is an uncommon complication. It usually occurs to a child and a recent expatriate. Its diagnosis is misleading into a context of infection. A 28-year-old European man, newly affected to Gabon, under chimioprophylactic drugs by chloroquine and proguanil, has been hospitalized in September 2000 because of an acute attack of malaria to Plasmodium falciparum. After four days treatment by quinine, he presented an abdominal pain with a Sub capsular Haematoma of the spleen confirmed by Scanner. The evolution was favourable under conservative treatment. The s…

In a study carried out in Gabon, antibodies against the treponema were looked for in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 13 children with active congenital syphilis (presence of specific IgM antibodies) and in 7 children with positive serologic reactions reflecting transplacental passage of maternal antibodies. Serologic reactions used included the VDRL test, the TPHA test, and the FTA-ABS IgG and IgM tests. Among the 13 children with syphilis, 7 had a positive FTA-ABS IgG test in the CSF without correlation with severity of clinical features, CSF protein levels or CSF cytologic findings. The TPH…

Schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma intercalatumis common in Gabon and, since 1971, Schistosoma haematobium has been found in the south of the country. Genital involvement is infrequent: 0.8 per cent of gynecologic specimens sent to the pathology laboratory and ten of 622 fallopian tube specimens (1.5 per cent). We report an unusual clinical case with hemoperitoneum as the first manifestation: the schistosomal lesion was developed within the tubal serosa, and caused a breach in an arteriole responsible for a 2500 cc hemoperitoneum. Genital lesions preferentially involve the vulva, vagina, and c…

Loa loa filariasis is usually found in the forest areas of Central and West Africa. We report a case that was diagnosed in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), a savanna area. The patient lived in Gabon but was visiting his family in Ouagadougou. He complained of fatigue, fever, itchy legs with scratch marks, and intermittent edema of the legs. A blood smear was first examined for malaria parasites, but Loa loa microfilariae were observed. Laboratory tests showed hypereosinophilia (30%). Transient angioedema (Calabar edema) was observed. Loa loa filariasis was diagnosed based on these findings. There w…

To assess the frequency of asymptomatic plasmodial infections in young children living in an area of hyperendemicity, a cohort of 200 children in Gabon was investigated longitudinally. Of 660 cases of Plasmodium falciparum infection, 77% were symptomatic at the time they were identified and only 7% were preceded by an asymptomatic phase of >4 days. Sickle cell trait, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, and mutation in the promoter region of tumor necrosis factor (TNF(-376A/-238A)) were significantly associated with asymptomatic P. falciparum infection (P=.03, P=.009, and P<.001, resp…
