[A comparative study of the effectiveness of iron preparations in the treatment of iron deficiency anemias in pregnant women].

Efficacies of ferroplex, conferon, and feramide in the treatment of pregnant patients with iron-deficiency anemia were compared. Ferroplex proved to be the most effective. Therapy with this drug brought about the best correction of iron metabolism parameters. Feramide was the least effective agent. The efficacy of iron preparations depends on the ionic form of this metal and the combination of iron with the agents conducive to its better absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

Acquired Refractory Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Anemia is a global health problem affecting one-third of the world population, and half of the cases are due to iron deficiency (ID). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the leading cause of disability in several countries. Although multiple mechanisms may coexist, ID and IDA causes can be classified as i) insufficient iron intake for the body requirement, ii) reduced absorption, and iii) blood losses. Oral iron represents the mainstay of IDA treatment. IDA is defined as "refractory" when the hematologic response after 4 to 6 weeks of treatment with oral iron (an increase of >=1 g/dL of Hb) is abs

Pharmacokinetic drug evaluation of rifaximin for treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

Rifaximin is a poorly absorbable antibiotic with a broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-negative and -positive bacteria. It is active in the small intestine due to its high bile solubility, whereas in the aqueous environment of the colon, it shows limited efficacy against highly susceptible bacteria. These unique pharmacokinetic properties limit its systemic effects and can correct gut microflora imbalances. Thus, rifaximin has become a major therapeutic agent in several gastrointestinal diseases in which an imbalance in gut microflora may play a role, including diarrhea predominant irrit

Exocrine gastric secretion and gastritis: pathophysiological and clinical relationships.

Gastric exocrine secretion, both acid and non-acid, is required for micronutrients absorption, such as iron, calcium and vitamin B12, drugs absorption, protein digestion. Clinical presentation of a gastric secretion impairment might be then characterized by the presence of both gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal specific symptoms (i.e. anemia) or to a non-response to therapies. The main factor that impairs gastric exocrine secretion homeostasis is mucosal chronic inflammation that principally occurs after colonization by Helicobacter pylori (Hp). The extent and distribution of gastritis

Evolution of lipid classes and fatty acid digestibility along the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens fed different fat sources at different ages.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of the dietary fat saturation degree and age on the lipid class (TAG, DAG, MAG, and FFA) composition and fatty acid digestibility along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and excreta in broiler chickens. A total of 120 one-day-old female broiler chickens were randomly distributed in 2 dietary treatments (6 cages/treatment), which resulted from the supplementation of a basal diet with 6% of soybean oil or palm oil. Two digestibility balances were carried out at 14 and 35 d and fatty acid digestibility and lipid class composition were determin

Urine levels of rifampicin & isoniazid in asymptomatic HIV-positive individuals.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: AIDS and its associated gastrointestinal complications may impair the absorption of anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs. Impaired absorption of anti-TB drugs could lead to low drug exposure, which might contribute to acquired drug resistance and reduced effectiveness of anti-TB treatment. The aim of this study was to obtain information on the status of absorption of rifampicin (RMP) and isoniazid (INH) in asymptomatic HIV- positive individuals, who are less immunocompromised. The D-xylose absorption test was also carried out to assess the absorptive capacity of intestive. MET

The synthesis and evaluation of thiolated alginate as the barrier to block nutrient absorption on small intestine for body-weight control.

Obesity is the most common health concern all over the world. However, till now, there is no promising way to manage obesity or body-weight control. The aim of the study is to develop an edible gel as a health supplement that temporarily attaches to the mucus of the intestines, forming an absorption barrier to block the nutrients. We modify the alginate with the thiol group as thiolated alginate (TA) that may stay on the mucosa layer for a much longer time to reduce nutrient absorption. In this study, the TA is synthesized successfully and proved a good mucosal adhesion to serve as a barrier f

Ex vivo absorption of thymol and thymol-β-D-glucopyranoside in piglet everted jejunal segments.

Food-producing animals are reservoirs of Campylobacter, a leading bacterial cause of human foodborne illness. The natural product thymol can reduce the survivability of Campylobacter, but its rapid absorption in the proximal gastrointestinal tract may preclude its use as a feed additive to reduce intestinal colonization of these pathogens. This work examined the ex vivo absorption of thymol and thymol-β-d-glucopyranoside in everted porcine jejunal segments, as the latter was hypothesized to be more resistant to absorption. A modified gas chromatography and extraction method was developed to de

Oral Tetracycline-Class Drugs in Dermatology: Impact of Food Intake on Absorption and Efficacy.

Tetracycline-class drugs are frequently used in dermatology for their anti-inflammatory properties to treat skin diseases such as acne, rosacea, and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) clinical guidelines do not offer guidance regarding the co-administration of food with tetracycline-class drugs. The objectives of this study were to review the available evidence regarding whether taking tetracycline-class drugs with food decreases systemic absorption and is associated with an impact on clinical efficacy. A literature search was conducted using the PubMed da

[Electrophysiologic changes in rumen epithelium in their effect on magnesium transport--a review].

The forestomach is the main site of Mg2+ absorption in the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants and maintains Mg2+ homeostasis. It has long been known that an increase in K+ intake and, consequently, in ruminal K+ concentration ([K+]) decreases the apparent digestibility of Mg2+, which increases the risk of hypomagnesemia and tetany. The present review summarizes new findings on the mechanisms of Mg2+ absorption across the rumen epithelium. It has been shown that transcellular and active Mg2+ transport is the predominant pathway for Mg2+ transport from lumen to blood. It is well established tha

Systemic influence of immunosuppressive drugs on small and large bowel transport and barrier function.

Immunosuppressive drug (ISD)-associated gastrointestinal disorders are a relevant risk factor for graft loss or patient death. The pathomechanisms and the incidence of post-transplantation diarrhea remain to be fully understood. The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of cyclosporine A, tacrolimus (TAC), mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), enteric coated mycophenolic acid (EC-MPA), sirolimus, everolimus (EVE) and fingolimod (FTY 720) on small and large bowel transport and barrier function. [Intestinal absorption of insulin with a new telemetric shuttle in dogs].

Telemetric shuttles for the in vivo investigation of the gastrointestinal tract have been available for sometime. We describe herein the use of a new shuttle model whose original features include: a) continuous, real time transmission of its location in the small bowel and accurate measurement of the gut length, b) controlled release of 1 ml of a given substance at any chosen site, allowing detailed investigation of intestinal absorption at different levels of the small bowel under physiological conditions. Small bowel length was measured in dogs using the shuttle and was later compared to the

Drug interactions with antisecretory agents.

Antisecretory agents may affect the absorption, metabolism, and renal excretion of other drugs. Inhibition of gastric acid secretion may decrease the gastrointestinal absorption of drugs such as ketoconazole that dissolve poorly in the absence of adequate acid. With anti-secretory agents, the drug interaction mechanism most likely to result in adverse effects is the inhibition of hepatic oxidative drug metabolism, primarily a problem with cimetidine. Omeprazole also appears to inhibit the hepatic metabolism of some drugs, but available evidence indicates that it interacts with fewer drugs than

Gastrointestinal disease and oral contraception.

Oral contraceptive steroids play a major role in modern family planning. With the present tendency to decrease the doses of both estrogens and progestogens, any factor that reduces the bioavailability of the lower-dose preparations may have an impact on contraceptive protection. Although ethinyl estradiol, the most commonly used oral estrogen, is liable to an enterohepatic circulation as unchanged drug, the commonly used progestogens are not. At present, no convincing evidence exists in the human subject that disruption of the enterohepatic circulation by antibiotics or antacids does reduce co

The effect of riboflavin deficiency in rats on the absorption and distribution of iron.

1. Riboflavin may play a part in the transport of iron across the gastrointestinal mucosa. Fe absorption was measured in the rat by monitoring whole-body retention of a dose of 59Fe using a small-animal gamma-counter. 2. Female Norwegian Hooded rats were fed on a diet deficient in riboflavin (B2-) from 5 weeks of age. Control animals, fed on a complete diet (B2+), were weight-matched to rats fed on the B2- diet. After 7 weeks all rats were fed on a test meal extrinsically labelled with 59Fe and whole-body radioactivity measured for 15 d. 3. Riboflavin deficiency was associated with a reduction

The effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on fertility, contraception, and pregnancy: clinical perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: This debate paper aims to examine the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), whose use in obesity and diabetes management has rapidly expanded, on fertility, contraceptive efficacy, and pregnancy outcomes in reproductive-aged individuals, and to provide evidence-based clinical guidance. MAIN ARGUMENTS/EVIDENCE: GLP-1 RAs improve fertility in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) through weight reduction and enhanced insulin sensitivity, meta-analyses demonstrated significantly higher spontaneous pregnancy rates. However, gastrointestinal side

Identification, In Silico Screening, Inhibition Mechanisms to Keap1 and Angiotensin-I-Converting Enzyme, and Ferrous-Transport Capacity of a Multifunctional Octapeptide from Camellia oleifera Globulin.

Camellia oleifera expeller is an abundant protein resource, but its usage in food is limited. In this study, potential antioxidant and hypotensive peptides with ferrous-chelating activity were isolated, identified, and virtually screened from camellia expeller globulin hydrolysates. The action mechanisms against Keap1 and angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE), gastrointestinal stability, and ferrous-transmembrane absorption were studied. After in silico screening, a safe multifunctional octapeptide: Ser-Gly-Tyr-Gly-Tyr-Gly-Tyr-Gly (SGYGYGYG) was obtained. SGYGYGYG showed high ACE-restraining a

Serial transverse enteroplasty and nipple valve construction, two life saving techniques for patients with short bowel syndrome, a report of 5 cases.

BACKGROUND: Various abdominal pathologies end up with surgical resection of small intestine. When the small intestine remnant is too short for adequate fluid and micronutrients absorption, short bowel syndrome is diagnosed. The disabling condition needs a multidisciplinary approach to design parenteral nutrition, care for thrombotic, hepatic and infectious complications and gradually wean the patient from parenteral nutrition. Various surgical techniques have been introduced to increase absorptive mucosa and enhance the intestinal adaptation process. Serial transverse enteroplasty and nipple v
