Diagnostic challenges of autism spectrum disorder in women without intellectual or language impairments: a narrative review.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adult women without intellectual or language impairments is frequently under-recognized, due to subtler manifestations, greater use of compensatory social strategies, and reliance on diagnostic frameworks developed from male presentations. Diagnostic overshadowing, where autistic traits are misattributed to other psychiatric conditions, further delays accurate identification. This narrative review aims to critically evaluate recent evidence on the diagnostic challenges of ASD in adult women without intellectual or language impairments, assess the performance o

Women's empowerment and contraceptive use: Recent evidence from ASEAN countries.

BACKGROUND: A fundamental element of gender equity are women's rights to reproductive choice. Women's empowerment is often linked to enabling decisions around contraceptive use and reduced fertility worldwide, although limited evidence is currently available around contraceptive use and decision making in ASEAN countries. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between women's empowerment and contraceptive use in five selected ASEAN member states. METHODS: Data from the latest Demographic and Health Survey of Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, The Philippines, and Timor-Leste were used. The main ou…

Informal payments and the illusion of free care: a perspective from Somalia's fragile health system.

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) promises access to care without financial hardship, yet in many low- and middle-income settings this ideal is undermined by pervasive informal payments. This perspective introduces the concept of the "illusion of free care" to explain how official fee-exemption policies coexist with hidden, off-the-record charges that reshape access and equity. Drawing on Somalia as a critical case of health system fragility, we argue that informal payments are not isolated acts of corruption but predictable responses to chronic underfunding, weak governance, and workforce preca

The Lived Experiences of Hispanic Men in Managing Their Type 2 Diabetes: A Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 34 million Americans have diabetes with Hispanics being disproportionately affected. Yet, qualitative research exploring the diversity of experience of having diabetes within Hispanic subgroups or gender-specific experiences is lacking. This study explores the lived experiences of Hispanic men managing type 2 diabetes (T2D) to identify social, cultural, and psychological influences on self-management and inform culturally tailored interventions. METHOD: This phenomenological study utilized purposive sampling to explore the lived experiences of Hispanic men (N = 10)

A pox on all our houses: a missing component in the global mpox response is equity.

The global health community has had more than a decade to develop pandemic preparedness programmes and apply lessons learnt to new disease outbreaks. Mpox has now been declared a global public health emergency, but the response appears to be missing important elements of equity, focusing instead on diagnosis and surveillance. This approach leaves vulnerable populations in countries grappling with the outbreak without the preventive and treatment services they need. Based on our experiences managing the current mpox outbreak in Burundi, we outline some limitations of ongoing response strategies

Disparities in liver-related care among transgender adults with steatotic liver disease: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender (TGD) adults experience healthcare disparities across multiple domains, yet care for steatotic liver disease (SLD) remains uninvestigated. AIMS: Evaluate whether TGD adults with SLD receive equitable liver-related care compared with cisgender (CGD) adults. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study conducted at a tertiary medical center (2015-2025). Adults with SLD were identified by a 2-step process (ICD-10 codes, manual chart review). Patients with other causes of liver disease and missing data were excluded. TGD status was defined by ICD-10 codes for gender dysphoria, doc

Evaluating the Alliance against Violence and Adversity Online Training Program: an online curriculum to support children, women, and gender-diverse people.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are Canadian public health concerns and human rights violations that inequitably impact the health of children, women, and gender-diverse people. The Alliance against Violence and Adversity (AVA) developed an Online Training Platform (AVA Online) to facilitate learning about GBV, ACEs, implementation science, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility for students, academics, and community partners. This study evaluated the first iteration of AVA Online using mixed-method survey data from platform users.

Perceptions of a gender-neutral approach to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Cameroon: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cameroon’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) introduced the HPV vaccine into the routine immunization schedule in Cameroon in October 2020. However, coverage for this vaccine was just 20% by December 2022, prompting the government to adopt and implement a gender-neutral vaccination (GNV) from January 2023. The goal was to increase acceptance, reduce stigma, and improve vaccine coverage. This study aimed to assess the perceptions of key immunization stakeholders in Cameroon on the GNV approach to HPV vaccination. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted from June to September
